My last comments on Saturday's debacle...
Despite all of the negativity surrounding what happened, Mullen is a good coach and we've had an outstanding season. I can also respect the fact that he placed blame on himself and his coaches rather than throwing players under the bus. With that said...
1) Our offensive gameplan sucked from the get go, and we never had a prayer to win that game with those play calls. This was made worse by the Rebs' constant use of misdirection and generally clever schemes that allowed their playmakers to get the ball in open space. Meanwhile, we just kept running Dak and JRob into that wall up front.
2) Our tackling and overall defensive effort was piss poor and unacceptable. Jaylen Walton, who had a hair over 400 yard ON THE SEASON ran for 148 against our vaunted run defense. Pathetic
3) Our defensive schemes, while solid for 90% of the snaps, gave up more big plays in one day than a team should be giving up in half a season.
4) Our DLine did an awful job of pressuring Bo, and I'm not sure that he was even forced to scramble(much less sacked) on more than a couple occasions all game
5) While I can forgive most of the above points for one half of football, we made very few adjustments at halftime in spite of getting dominated in every facet of the game and that, once again, is unacceptable
Folks, we had an inexcusably poor plan of attack, we did not execute the plan that we did have in any way, shape, or form, and we were woefully uninspired to win what was most likely the most important game in our program's history. I like Dan and all, but I'm glad to hear him say that he's going to be thinking about this one for the next 365 days because his coaching staff did not do what they were paid to do last weekend. It was quite possibly the worst coaching job I've seen since Mullen took over, and there should be no "well, he'll learn from this" in year 6. He's had 5 years to get his feet wet and if there was ever a single time to pull out all the stops, Saturday was it. We didn't even try, though. We thought that we could just roll out there with a vanilla playbook and win as if we were playing Miss Valley.
It's unacceptable, and all I'll say is that Dan and company better make sure that it never happens again
