for prospects.

Epstein has come in and cleaned house. The Cubs will suck in 2012, but there is potential for the the future.

but he'll definitely be a solid and consistent 2 or 3 which is something the Cubs haven't had in a LONG time.

On a normal pitching staff (i.e. not the Pirates), I thought he would be a 3, but right now, the Cubs don't even have an Ace, so at least for the near future, he's going to be placed in a spot in the rotation that he is probably not built for...<div>
</div><div>But hey, I still think he's a very solid pitcher.</div>

But my point still stands... The point I was trying to make is that if Maholm is a 4th or 5th starter in the rotation, that the rotation as a whole is on par with the Phillies or the Yankees. <div>
</div><div>Most of those guys could go elsewhere and easily be a 2 or a 3...</div><div>
</div><div>But still, I'm excited to have him as a Cub no matter where in the rotation he may be.</div>

I think he's more of a 3 myself. But he could be the Cubs 2 if they trade Matt Garza like they are trying to do and probably will do.

Maholm's ERA was a solid 3.66 which was good for top 25 in the National League and he had a WAR of 2.6. And that was with a crappy team- his record was 6-14. I think he is really just now entering his prime and he will be a good pick up for the Cubs. Those numbers are about in line with a third starter- he had a better ERA than Zack Grienke. And I think his numbers will improve with a better team.

It's good for Maholm because regardless of whether they suck as bad as the Pirates- and they won't- the Cubs are still a larger market team and he will get more exposure.

You are going to have a chance to win the World Series.

But, the Yankees staff isn't quite as deep as it used to be. See A J Burnett- he was pretty inconsistent and Colon and Garcia- who knows how much is left in their tank? Ivan Nova was pretty good and I like him, but I want to see him put up those numbers again before I totally buy him. Maholm would have been a really good fit with the Yankees being a LH pitcher in that ballpark.

The Phillies are going to lose Oswalt- but it's hard to match up with Halladay, Lee and Hamels if they are healthy. Joe Blanton is average at best. I've heard that the Dodgers are going to make a big run at Hamels next year.
