1. Tubberville - gamble that he's not burned out but he's very familiar with the area and has always won.

2. Patterson (TCU HC) - not sexy but I actually like that he's a defensive coach. MSU is known for defense and while I certainly want to increase the offense, I don't want to lose the defensive indentity. I think it's how we're going to have to win more often than not.

3. Petersen (Boise HC) - the sexy hire and one I can get excited about. History of other Boise HC going to BCS conferences does bring mild concern.

4. Riley (Oregon St HC) - might not be interested but his resume of building a program would go well with MSU and he has the prerequisite Bama ties.

5. Kelly (Cincy HC) - another sexy hire for the offensive end - but I honestly don't think he's interested in us

That's my clear Top 5, after that we delve into the following.

6. T. Gill (Buffalo HC) - has built a program, experience a slight issue but I think he'd do a decent job.

7. Holtz (East Carolina HC) - another good, not great hire.

8. Bowden (Clemson) - track record would be god-like if he could duplicate at MSU. Personality problems a potential issue.

9. Fedora (USM HC) - haven't really seen him mentioned and he might not be ready - but his offenses produce and he has built-in in-state connections

10. Greg Davis (Texas OC) - haven't seen him mentioned anywhere either but has a great track record and knowing he's not the heir apparent - might be last chance to get out - bonus factor of possibly bring Major Applewhite with him)

Others: Fulmer (TN), Graham (tulsa); OK Offesive coordinator (forget name); Hudspeth, Norm Chow, Mullens (FL) B. Johnson (Vandy) and I'm probably missing some decent canidates as well.

1. Chris Peterson
2. Tommy Bowden
3. Al Borges ( also a good OC replacement for Woody)
4. Brian Kelly
5. Phil Fulmer

We dont need Dooley, we dont need Skip Holtz, and we dont need Patterson. We need proven winners, no one time good coaches. We need a big name coach to come in and compete with the other big name coaches all over the SEC, and Peterson and Bowden are the only 2 big names available right now. Tubberville wont come here cuz hes gonna stay at Auburn.

I can't go with Borges - the WCO will not work in college football. There are a lot of pro players that have trouble grasping that offense, and they are paid well to do football and nothing else (hey to Plaxico Burress)

Totally agree. I want to open up the offense for sure, but it seems like all these teams with wide open offenses also have wide open defenses for whatever reason. I still want to smack people around. CAN'T lose that identity.

Patterson
Riley

I don't think South Florida's coach is going anywhere and I don't like the idea of offering Malzhan to be the head man - not sure he's ready for that yet but I could be wrong.

...since he is the Steelers' current offensive coordinator. That being said, I don't see him or MSU being interested in each other.

Bill Cowher was contacted about the TN job. I'm not sure how long he considered it before he said no- probably about .0001 seconds. These guys don't normally get contacted, though, unless someone believes there might be at least a little interest.

My list, in order of what I belive to be likely- probably way off:
1. Petersen
2. Tubs esp. with the rumors today
3. Somebody we've not even thought of
4. Gill, Patterson, Dooley
5. Bowden

Mine are pretty much the same as yours:
1. Kelly
2. Petersen
3. Patterson
4. Mullen
5. Riley/Bowden
Also, I don't think Dooley would be a terrible hire. Obviously not a top choice, but I think he would be a solid-fall back option if some of our other choices fell through.
