We now have a top 15 class according to scout! This will probably fluctuate back and forth, but having a class like this is fantastic. Congrats to Dan Mullen and the great group of coaches he brought in. He has really gotten recruits, alumni, students, and everyone else associated with Mississippi State reenergized about football. Great job goes out to Dan Mullen and staff.

Definately didnt think this is where we would be about a month and a half ago. Good to see the recruits were open to listening to what Mullen had to say when we hired him. I was worried how the class would turn out when Croom left, but Mullen went hardcore and was in home visiting the hell out of our commits and recruits and got them pumped about coming to State.

with no 5* recruits. Not that *'s necessarily mean a thing.

Being four behind Florida and five behind Alabama, now that says something for a guy that's been coach for what, a month?

Mullen pieced together a bunch of pretty good names at positions we have been weakest at like QB, DT, DE, WR, and some pretty big guys at OL. Mullen has gone after some big names, but these guys fit his system and his style of play. Mullen went hardcore after these big names at the skill positions, especially some good JUCO guys, and Croom just didnt have the drive to get the bigger names at certain positions we needed. Mullen has put together a solid, deep class with alot of playmakers at all positions. Great job by Mullen in putting together a great class so far.

Coach Croom is responsible for about 70% of these players. Coach Mullen has maintained what Croom started and is finishing up strong. I think both Croom and Mullen deserve credit for these players.

How do you visit the hell out of someone?

Mullen went hardcore and was in home visiting the hell out of our commits

Scout: Pat, how did your visit with Coach Mullen go?

Pat Patterson: It was nice, he visited the hell out of me.

I agree, but I do think that without the energy that Mullen has brought in, guys like Bumphis and Thames may not be here. Also not sure if Montrell Conner would be here. I dont think Croom would have persued Bumphis as hard as Mullen did. Gotta give Croom credit for some of what we have, but it wouldnt be nearly as deep if Mullen hadnt come in and rejuvenated our recruiting base.

that if he were still here, we would have lost some of these recruits and would not have landed Perkins.

And I think it goes to show that a lot of these recruits want to go to Mississippi State, but we have to give them a REASON to go to MSU. You can't fault these players for looking out for themselves. Even if they loved Croom, there's a pretty darn good chanve that Croom would have been fired while they're in school. Then let's say we hire someone that ran the flexbone, then all of a sudden a guy like Tyler Russell would have to transfer or try to run an offense he's not suited for. Then you've got Saban and Kiffen telling these players all of this stuff, and then next thing you know, Russell is at Bama.

So, yes, credit Croom for having the Liberty Bowl season and getting to most of these guys, but then credit Byrne for hiring Mullen and credit Mullen for keeping this class intact and improving it.

I think Croom definitely gets credit for getting this class started and Mullen gets credit for bringing things home, but a big shout out to the Ninja for simply not being Larry Templeton and having the balls to make necessary changes.

We still have to wait and see who gets in. I'm not getting my hopes up until August when all is said and done with grades.

was going to come with Croom here. He had stated as such. He even said he didn't want to play in a spread offense. Croom did a good job getting him to commit to here and at the same time, I think Mullen deserves equal amount of credit by convincing Conner to remain committed.

but I'm also extremely worried about the OL and the Defense (replacing Peques, Bowman, Douglas, etc and TORBUSH). On that subject, technically how will Big Dan shore up our OL to keep Tyler from getting killed? Did Florida, Utah use closer line splits, and depend on quicker releases or what? I don't see 40 points a game unless somethig is done.

The one thing about spread offenses is that you can recruit a different kind of O-lineman and have success. Depending on your style of spread, sometimes it pays to have somewhat smaller and quicker guys on the O-line. Not saying that's Mullen's spread, but it might be something to look for. As far as your class is concerned, much like ours, the main thing I'd be concerned about is the lack of beef on the offensive side.

We're both in need on the OL, more so than other spots. I think you have two OL commits. We only have three. I don't know who else you are in on at OL, but if I was an MSU fan, I'd be hoping to see 2 more players signed for OL.

Aubrey Phillips is becoming more and more of a long shot based on what I've read but he's almost a necessity at this point. Also, we've requested film on Columbus OL Billy Autrey but haven't offered. Some think he could develop into a good center or guard with time. Regardless, we should sign more than two OLs every year.

Yea, I mentioned it on Nafoom as well, and Mutt was basically saying the same thing, but I feel like you need to try to sign about 4 O-linemen in every class at a minimum, maybe more if you have a big need at the position (like both our teams do). O-linemen for the most part aren't going to play immediately. Most of the guys you bring in will need a year in the system to develop, with the exception of some super studs and the occasional Juco, so to me it's all about getting guys in and then bringing them along.

Other than your O-line group though, I'd say you've done a good job of addressing your needs.

"Did Florida, Utah use closer line splits, and depend on quicker releases or what? I don't see 40 points a game unless somethig is done."

We will probably have wider line splits to help the lineman and open up running lanes inside. Larger splits create better angle blocking

It will take awhile to get to 40 a game, but 25 a game next year isnt unreasonable

Croom definitely laid a great foundation but Mullen definitely kept the wheels from falling off during transition and actually improved on Croom's class. The fact that we didn't lose half of the recruits during a coaching change is a testament to the new staff.

Not to mention, that we havent had any fallout from the Wilson debacle
