We should hire Flood back

The fact that the guy that was hired to coach such a crucial position just happened to come from a school with recruits to sway hasn’t sat well with me from the beginning.

You need an offensive line coach with what they call stain if I remember correctly.

Amazingly, Flood next move will be HC of a Top 25 team. The Texas offense is explosive. I guess when Flood was conservative at Rutgers , run, run, and run it was due to the QB and offensive line just like it is now. It’s all about the personnel. I always blamed Flood but now realize it the personnel.

I'll be surprised if he gets a HC job in the P5 again. Sarkisian is the play caller of that offense not Flood. I think you'd have to be known as a top notch recruiter like Pittman at Ark or Orgeron or Cristobal to get a HC job from that spot and don't think Flood is seen as that. Him getting an actual OC position as lead play caller might even be a reach.

I've mentioned Bill Bedenbaugh the OL coach at OU as a potential OC for us in the past and he's been OL coach for Leach/Riley and their great offenses at TT/OU and he doesn't really get much play for OC let alone HC and he's been known to be a top OL coach and contributor to that offense over the years. Never know but I wouldn't bank on it with regards to Flood.

You really can’t judge things until we recruit guys with the actual size and skill set to play OL in the BIG. The guys we have now work incredibly hard, but they just aren’t the caliber of player we need to compete. No coach can change that fact.
Sadly and truly.

It seems like all the colleges find the same top OL, and they all want the top ranked teams. Then again some big OL are dominant in high school because they are big and they get equalized in college.

Maybe a wise coach can scout more guys off the beaten path. A local kid - Ali Marpet - is a top OL in NFL but he was more of a basketball player in HS. Played DIII ball at Hobart but made 2nd round NFL. Seems like a lot of good football players were basketball players at one time. At least you know a kid can move well. A big kid who can move can be built up to full sized but a full-sized big kid cant necessarily be coached to move. I think it was Butch Davis who lamented a lot of top players have been coached so well in HS they don't improve much anymore in college. Maybe some more raw players with some abilities are worth a try. Heck GS ends-up moving new guys to OL a lot anyway. RU lines have been liabilities for most years

OK, I have no dog in this fight but for God's sake, Schiano needs some time. Your 2022 class is top notch- right on par with Michigan for average / player. Granted, yesterday's game was a stinker at best, but that happens every so often

Also, the guys with size and the potential skills to do are pushed onto the field too soon. The current prime example is Pierce. He reminds me of Mike Fladdel of about 12-14 years ago. A big guy who, when he arrived, was short on skills. He actually lost a decent amount of weight at RU while replacing fat with muscle. He also didn't see the field until his red shirt sophmore year. Pierce got rushed onto the field this year, but has the potential to develop into a player of Fladdel's talent.

At least three times a NW defensive end appeared to run around our tackle (no need to call out the kid by name).

Our guy is doing his best; he’s young and maybe better fit at guard in the future, but it takes time to coach up a 19 year old who is at a stage in his career where DEs are running around him.

I don’t blame the kids, I don’t blame the coaches. There isn’t a lot of polished talent at the position, there are injuries, we’re up against big ten competition. It is what it is.

One look at our commitment list demonstrates that the coaches were seriously alarmed about this position group before week one.

I think the bigger issue with Pierce is that a person his size should at the very least be able to slightly slow down the opposition. He should have a massive wingspan, it's ridiculous how often a DE can just run around him.

6’8, 380 pounders with a technique for stopping defenders from running around them don’t have to walk on to football programs.

I don’t know anything about his playing history, and I like @mdk01 comparison to Fladell. For now through, he’s an inexperienced lineman taking his lumps against better competition while trying to learn his craft.

I don’t blame him, I don’t blame the coaches. This is what happens to a team that hasn’t recruited well for a decade. Our first year, second year players would be better served learning under veteran players, we just don’t have that luxury.

Also — I don’t mean to throw this kid under the bus, it’s not one guy. It’s a position group that’s struggling right now.

Kyle had a good day today. Counting Crows must not be touring. Lousy recruiter.

I saw on Twitter of some reporters that Texas closed or flipped a bunch of players. I’m sure the NIL is helping them but they always get players so it’s a matter of what do they do with them.

I saw Jimbo was threatening to break Alabama/UGA’s streak (mainly Alabama) for #1 overall but who cares really other than some notoriety. I read Jimbo has had 4 top 8 classes…that’s plenty of paper talent but so far what I see is .500 records in the SEC mostly for all that money he makes and recruits he gets. He’s had 1 really good year.

Wasn't there a thread a week ago about every online player getting a $150k nil deal? ( Or was that somewhere else?)

Yeah nothing had to do with this being Texas...all bc Flood was the recruiter there
He was a good recruiter at the previous stop too. Maybe the problem at Rutgers was not him, but what he had to sell and the clown show around him?

He was and is a great OL coach
we do not know this.. Rutgers recruited some great OL before Flood got here in 2005. He didn't screw them up, I guess... not until he had them only doing zone blocking in 2009 and 2010 as co-CO in charge of the run game. But his OL eventually failed.. bad recruiting? OL not wanting to come here?

In any case, Flood is Texas and Steve Sarkasian's problem now as Flood coaches OL and is, *gulp*.. the OC !

Traitorous Texas deserves that.

I think it was 50k but I don’t remember for sure.
on page 4:

Oh that's on top of the Clark Field Collective which secured $10M for NIL deals for the Horns as well. This is anticipated to play players upwards of $100K per year for deals, so a starting OL at UT could be getting around $150K per year they are on scholarship.

The guy f'd up here in several ways, but people painted the guy as Flood the dud, and Fudd, etc. Well, the guy could not sell ice to eskimos like Greg can, but he was swimming upstream during his time here with very little financial support and the circus sideshow for an athletics director and the Mike Rice fiasco. He did stupid stuff in the end that sank his own ship, but there were a lot of reasons for recruits to avoid Rutgers during his tenure as head coach. If he was a disaster and a dud, Sark would not have brought him over to Texas, and he would not be out recruiting in Texas.

Jeez man . Give it up . Flood was a dud
I don’t care if he comes back and his off field issues did kill us but RU Footballs record while he was here vs all other years since we went Big time in the 80’s is night and day. Do the math. Of course he had Schiano building it and he started the demise but he can flat out coach. Wins matter right?
