We were lowest in the league, only playing 2 true freshmen Sat.

Good thing, or bad thing? I say good thing, a lot of experienced players and Mullen is recruiting for the system.

it has positives and negatives. One of our selling points to recruits was that you have a chance to play right away. Now we know longer have that except at the WR position. Also, playing alot of true freshmen and losing the game is muchmore understandablethan losing with veterans on the field.Look at last year for instance, if all of our best players last year were veterans, thenthings wouldn't be looking up in the future, but since there were so many freshmen playing, things lookedgood for the year and years to come.

I think, in the end, since we won the game, it is a good thing, but if we have a losing season (which i don't think we will)it could look bad.

Let's look at them:

QB - Favre: easy enough to see while we'll redshirt him unless an injury occurs.

RB - Griffin: same thing - he's 4th string so why waste the year on 15 carries unless an injury occurs

WR - R. Johnson, M. Johnson, Lewis: Malcolm was hurt so behind the 8 ball and Robert is still learning so he's 3rd string. Lewis is behind Bump and Heavens so easy RS decisions here

OL - D. Day, D. Robinson, E. Lawson, A. Muniz, B. Clausell -- one of the positions you want to always be able to redshirt everybody if possible

TE - Hill: Learning new position, 4th string

DL - Virges, Eulls, Gay - another position you'd like to redshirt everyone and we're solid 2 deep here already

LB - Bohanna, Holmes - our starters aren't going to get much of a break and we have 2 Sr's so might as well RS them unless you waste them on ST.

CB - Hughes, Love - not cracking the 2 deep although by next year they may vault Anderson/Watson as 2nd string

S - Wells: And he might end up at LB

So while I love this class we just have good talent ahead of them. Even thouh we played Carr and Hughes I think we'll see them mostly on ST and not a ton on normal downs

but I disagree with this line of thinking.
LB - Bohanna, Holmes - our starters aren't going to get much of a break and we have 2 Sr's so might as well RS them unless you waste them on ST.

The fact that we have two senior starters means that we should be playing every LB that isn't a SR as much as possible. LB is shaping up to be a glaring weakness next year. While KJ & White will be the unquestioned starters (assuming no injuries), I hope Diaz plays younger players as much as it makes sense to do so. To me, a SO LB that has played roughly a quarter a game for a whole season is far more valuable to us next year than a RFr with no game experience.

We are still a team that is building, so we can't afford to have a setback season just so we can say we redshirted everyone. Certainly, at most positions, it makes sense to redshirt most everyone this season. To me at least, LB it simply doesn't. Between a lack of depth and two departing SRs, we need to be playing anyone & everyone that can help us this year as well as be developing real game experience for next year.

I'm guessing next year at LB will be CJ, Bohana and Jamie Jones fighting for MLB spot. Hughes and CLawrence competing at one LB spot and Skinner at the other.

Might not hurt to add a JUCO here. Perhaps a Douglas quality guy to drop out of the sky into our laps.

Chris Hughes and Michael Carr were the only true freshmen that played.

You don't want to rely on true freshmen as starters but you would like to see 10-15 getting on the field. It just wasn't a great high schoolsigning class. The strength of the class was in the Offensive Line and most O-linemen need to redshirt. Matt Wells was one of the headliners, but he is at a deep position.

That's half a recruiting class. I've always said you'd like to redshirt about 50-75% if you can get away with it. We already have lots of young depth at many positions (DBs, WR, TE, RB). No doubt we need to play a couple of young LBs to prepare for next year, and I believe we'll do that. I also expect we'll pick an OT to play that we can groom to replace Sherrod (possibly Clausell). But outside of those positions, it doesn't make sense to give guys a handful of snaps this year if we don't expect them to compete for a starting job this year or next.

Also folks - don't forget three JUCOs who are not redshirting: Carmon, Howie, & Ballard. So five guys from last years class have played, and we'll probably see another 2-3 sometime this year (maybe Clausell, Griffin, and another freshmane LB).

b/c the game stats show no tackles. Someone may have gotten him confused with Whitley at some point since Whitley wore 5.
