Week 1 Thoughts

Seems like Union, Richlands, Glenvar, and Giles are good like we anticipated (after a week)

We knew Radford and Galax would be good, but possibly better than we anticipated

Graham and Pulaski are two programs that potentially surprised some folks for the better (me included), and may see more success this season

Any other week 1 thoughts?

The Glenvar-Galax game was closer than I thought it would be.
I agree. Glenvar's offense had a hard time getting going in the first half. Did much better in the third and had an amazing scoring drive in 30 seconds to win the game. A couple of long passes won the game. Galax was solid defensively on the rush.

Radford has a lot of off weapons . I think Galax can run the ball against them.

There's no bigger game this side of Roanoke on Friday than Richlands @ Union. Two of the top 3 teams in the west playing at a historic venue and an anticipated crowd that could see the 7 or 8 thousand mark.

These are two teams that are mirror images of each other and it is bound to be a dandy.

Would love to make the trip down there and see it, but it is unlikely that I will be able to. It's at Bullitt Park, correct? Also, how many does that place seat?

I may be a bit of a homer here, but IMHO I think these 2 teams are amoung the top 3 to 5 AA teams in the west and maybe in the state. I know it's early and people in the other areas of the state tend to forget about the teams out here, but these 2 teams are truly 2 extremely good football teams.

I think richlands wins against union by more than one score. Galax and Radford will be a toss up in my opinion - early edge to Radford. It'll be interesting to see how Galax responds after tough game this past Friday night.

Does anyone know anything about Jenkins, KY? I'm still trying to "Gauge" exactly how good Ridgeview is. Was this game a case of Ridgeview thumping a team like Rye Cove or should Union be worried about them?

Jenkins doesn't have a whole lot of players, so I wouldn't use that game as a gauge at all. They should be playing teams like Grace Christian, rather than Ridgeview, and I am not trying to slight them, that would just make for a more fun season for them. Obviously Grace Christian Staunton wouldn't make that trip, but they should play teams on that same competition level, if that gives you any idea.

Radford wins if they can make enough big plays and can stop running game in the trenches. Galax wins if they consistently make 3rd down and shorts and offense stays on the field. I haven't seen Radford yet but Galax is solid and loaded with athletes like Harris and Peoples.

No disrepect intended for Galax. They are a very good team and I wouldn't be surprised to see them as 1A champs this year, but it looks like Radford beat GW like they used to do back in the old NRV days every year. It should be one hell of a game, but I gotta go with the 'Cats over the Tide.

I'm going with Radford only because they are the home team. If they beat Galax like they did Wythe I'll be a believer. Not sure they can handle Harris.

I would imagine that it would be standing room only about 2 hours before kickoff then, based off how both teams support their schools.

Yeah. They are expecting 7000+ according to what I've been seeing. Gates open at 5:30 to try and allow the crowd in. Gonna be a college type atmosphere at BP.

Would be cool to see an aerial view from this one, similar to what they have done for Louisa, as I'd imagine that place will be ROCKING at kickoff. I'm jealous of those getting to attend this one.

I guess it'll be the Grant vs. Harris show then? I don't know a thing about Galax, but there's a whole lot more to Radford this year than their Back. I think this years offense is the best Saunders has fielded yet, still early though. Galax will be ready I'm sure, those coaches do a great job.

Finley and those receivers will be a tuff task for Galax to defend. I think these 2 teams have a good chance of meeting again in November. Special teams may decide this game.

I thought Galax pass D was pretty good against Glenvar which has an excellent pass game. Glenvar QB was very accurate and two great receivers but overall they limited Gelnvars chances. Galax pass rush was not great but I attributed that to Glenvar having a real good line and a QB that scrambles well his year. Will be interesting to see how the teams stack up. This is the most difficult game to predict this week.
