Well the season is in its second week and my rankings are still the same! really no surprises but my number 1 team Courtland almost got upset by a pesky rRverbend team! looks like by seasons end courtland chancellor and JM will be the top three but not necessarily in that order!
# 1 COURTLAND : the cougars still shell shocked by last weeks loss to Ponax woke up on a fourth quarter drive and held off Riverbend for a 7 t0 6 victory! their defenis a play off type defense and other than Friday night sleep walk the offense is one of the best in the state. therefore they hold the top spot this week! the cougars were fortunate that Orlando jones missed most the game because of a early injury!
# 2 JAMES MONROE : watched this game on tv and to be honest the jackets could have scored more than they did as their offense lead by QB AJ Felton and DJ Weldon. after a bunch of years as a predominantly spread passing team is it possible to now be a rushing team? that's the way they were back in the day with Charles BIG MACK McDaniel and Eric Bates. they was set up in a power I formation back then which is set up for a mostly running offense! they still have a decent passing attack with Felton and receivers Boley and Leacock! one thing for sure coach Serbay could care less how they move the ball rushing or passing as long as they put it in the end zone and win!
# 3 CHANCELLOR: that was our tv game this week and the chargers kind of disappointed me in the way they played. yes Ponax is probably the best team in the area but they didn't need any help in winning and the chargers aided them all night. they had good defensive position on the Ponax running plays and just missed a lot of tackles allowing Ponax to make long runs. even Jason Brown didn't have a great game even though he passed for 2 scores. yes maybe Ponax was a better team but not 42 to 19 better. come on chancellor get on the stick as you have a good eastern view team next!
# 4 KING GEORGE: saw this game Thursday night and the score was a lot closer than 26 to 8 Essex! the foxes lost 3 key players in this game the one that hurt the most was top running back Rashad Peyton who ran the ball well in the first half but didn't play in the second half. they also lost their quickest back little Jordan Alley also. this Essex team was good with a huge offensive line that the smaller KG defenders held their own. if these guys stay on the field the foxes may have upset Essex! we need to keep our eyes on my old buddy Jeff Smith's team. if they pull off a upset at Liberty next week I might just move them up. they are a little better than I expected them so far this year. GO FOXES!
# 5 SPOTSYLVANIA: AH My boys from post oak may be looking up. Kudos to coach Al Johnson for benching the starting QB and a couple other starters for the game for not being a professional Spotsy knight! it is about time someone showed discipline out there. good for coach Al.
the Knights won 29 to 28 against Fluvanna in OT. when is the last time a Knight backfield rushed for over 300 yards? had to be in the days of Tim Coleman. Big FB Michael Shelton rushed for over 200 yards. Did I say big FB and Tim Coleman helping out? he is the first one to tell you that in the wing t you need a good rushing FB and the have one in Shelton whos father was a excellent rb for Chancellor in the 90's! no they didn't beat a good team Friday but it looks like Johnson is starting to put the pieces together. 2 or 3 wins is doable as they are very small with very little speed and little talent but it looks like he may have them in the right direction finally! GOOD LUCK MY GUYS I AM PROUD OF YOU ALL!
# 6 CAROLINE: You know what? I see some good things happening with the cav's. after the lopsided loss to Patrick Henry coach Antron Yates told his players that if you wanted to quit turn your equipment in now. none did and they all ran to the locker room forgetting about this lopsided loss. that means something Carolne hasn't had in years team unity. good for you coach Yates as this is what they need.
they look like they have found a good QB in David Ware a whopping 349 yards passing and 3 td's. and excellent receivers lead by Brendon Williams 7 catches for 192 yards 2 td's. With Dinnwiddie next and the tough battlefield schedule it looks like the only chance you may have is Spotsy for a win. their defense is porous with very little running game on offense but I think maybe coach Yates is finally taking hold of what was once a bad situation out there with coaching changes and transfers! GOOD LUCK CAROLINE!
Well there they are folks. no changes but the season is young and it looks like all the teams are getting better and that's a good thing! HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL! does it get any better than this?
