Pretty sure Sammy Hart followed Ray Long and he was on that staff for a long time.
You are correct @Giggem. Coach Hart was a longtime assistant and took over the football program in 2011 or 2012 when Coach Long retired. I believe he coached football for three years. Coach Hart is a good man.

One of their unsung hero’s from the Ray Long era was long time line coach, Jim Cobb. Jim knew his stuff, plus he knew when to kick a fanny and when to give a hug. We lost Jim some years back. His big ole heart just stopped working one day.

True. Other schools (Hanover and Atlee) are still having success
Hanover is one of the biggest haves &
have-nots situations as far as opportunity disparity within a school division. The two schools you list are schools whose zones largely avoid poverty. It’s as simple as that, in my opinion. The division and county leadership is also good-old boy environment at its finest.

PH has A LOT of pockets that rival Deep Run and Godwin as far as socioeconomics go. Hanover has the highest cost (Goochland is closing in) of living in the Richmond Metro but there is a small pocket that go to Mechanicsville and PH that are below the poverty line and it’s a huge gap. Hanover County is a different world compared to the surrounding areas for a lot of reasons.

It just seems crazy to me that a program that was so successful for so long can’t seem to keep kids in the program or keep a coaching staff together. It can’t be tied to socioeconomics only. Who runs the athletic department over there?

Socioeconomics isn’t the sole factor but a big factor. My lady works at PH, Liberty, and the elementary schools on that side of the county. It’s a different world compared to most school districts in this area. Politics and lawsuit driven (my own personal opinion)..

CountyBoyGeneral is spot on. The most politically-focused county & school division leadership in the Richmond area by a mile. Mike Gill was no liberal & he found himself on the outs with the school board for some very benign differences of opinion. Extremists dominate the conversation in Hanover.
