Wow, it’s week 3 already. What caught my eye is that there is a smattering of games tonight.
Hopefully a few of them will be on theNFHS Network.

By the way, I won’t mince my words, and I’ll say that up until this season the NFHS networked sucked. But, so far this year I have seen a vast improvement. Almost every play has an instant reply, and the “line to gain” is highlighted. The scoring etc, and PA announcer are still highly variable, but it’s at least an option to watch now. I’ve only seen one camera shot that was a little hazy, but even that was acceptable.

Dinwiddie vs. Springs - no matter who loses they will still get a ton of points.
This is gonna tell if Midlo and River are real.
Pity the Cavs of Clover Hill. They have to take on a Huguenot team that had to stew two week over the lose to St Chris. Can we say running clock game.

I am mildly surprised that Graham 1-2. Even though the one win is a forfeit, let’s face it they would have beaten Galax by 1000!!!

I understand the G-Men were without their starting QB. That certainly hurt. You can usually get through with your backup QB against ordinary teams, but let’s face it, Union ain’t ordinary this season.

Union got a rb that’s built like a unit, didn’t see most of the game only the 4th, but Union last drive it look like Graham didn’t even want a tackle him.

Well, let’s start this particular post with the obvious, Dinwiddie getting the win over HSHS in OT. Enough said.

Stuart’s Draft handily beating Riverheads caught my eye.

Poor Salem. And it doesn’t get any easier next week as they travel to Dinwiddie.

Both Stafford teams and bough Loudoun teams won. That is four teams to keep your eye on.
N Stafford, Stafford, Loudoun County, and Loudoun Valley.

Midlothian spanked Powhatan. Everybody keeps expecting for Powhatan to be a “player” again, but I don’t see it happening this year.

Happy for my friend Wikki that Amherst got the win.

How about Maury winning via a field goal in the third OT, over Bishop McNamara? That is three close, tough games in a row for Maury. But, they should cruise through the remainder of their regular season.

How about you? What did you see that was notable this week?

We need answers down here in King George. Unbelievable and unacceptable. I can’t put into words how a top 10-15 program in the state has fallen down this bad. Just sad but this what happens when you treat people bad.
Do we know what transpired that led to the coach and his staff leaving?

Unfortunately, I’m afraid you are looking at an 0-10 season. They may sneak out one win somewhere, but I doubt it. It’s sad to see a team that was once one of the toughest opponents you could face in the playoffs fall this far, this fast.

Unfortunately for Salem, Dinwiddie will beat them as bad as they want to. Gonna be a rough season for Salem. Definitely will be 0-4, I’m not even sure they will beat Blacksburg at this point. The defense is weak, no outside contain whatsoever, literally if a team runs the edge will average 10 yds a carry. A team like Dinwiddie will score every possession until they don’t want too.

Every school goes through a talent drought every now and then. Even the elites. Is this pretty much the case for Salem this year?

People don't realize how important a sound coach is. Lunsford like Mills created an awesome team and culture. Small one school towns are awesome. Just have to get buy in. It was there and quickly faded away. Very sad.

Boknowssports tried to warn after Lunsford and that staff left for Spotsy after how bad they were treated at King George.

Yes he did. Lunsford quickly turned a hapless KG team into a juggernaut. He is a former DIII QB and one heck of an offensive mind. With the player resources available in the area Spotsylvania will become a major player in Class 4 B by next season. He is 2-0 now. They are surely not to be counted out this year.

One thing that has caught my eye is it seems a lot of traditional powers are struggling. Heck Dinwiddie thought they had a juggernaut of a schedule with the three ood teams having good seasons last year. Salem, Highland Springs, and Granby have one win between them.

LOL, great teams are going to refuse to play us in the future. Not because of us as a competitor, but because we must bring them bad juju.

You may remember when we agreed to play N Stafford and GW? They were at the top of their game. Then they fell off terrible. Now it’s Granby and Salem this year. I was reminded that a similar thing occurred with Denbigh, James Monroe, and Smithfield. One that sure didn’t fall off was Maury. 🤕

How about Ed Webb and Riverbend! They are building something special
Yeah, 3-0 and 167-7 points is pretty awesome. The win over Forrest Park is significant, but wins over Cancellor and KG don’t mean a whole lot. They have some tough competition upcoming in the remainder of their schedule. I think Coach Webb and company have got it going, let’s hope they can keep it up.

1. Zion Boisseau and those Dinwiddie Generals! Phoebus Fan talked all that smack about Dinwiddie wasn’t going to be this or that because they lost a great player. As humbly as Dinwiddie Proud and Bleeding Navy come, I’m saying that you better put some respect on Coach Billy Mills name! Bleed Navy baby!

Thanks Dinwiddie. I’m glad y’all won. Might see you at the state game at LU if we do the food again

Ok. I will admit there is fewer times when I tune in and the game is unwatchable. But I have missed live touchdowns because the replay was still playing. Or my favorite from this past Friday, when the play was still going on, and it started the replay, which of course only continued to the point of interruption. At least the audio stays live the whole time, so I can kind of piece together what might have happened.

And the analytics used to guide to guide the cameras will often not catch up with long pass or run plays.
At least overall, it’s better instead of worse.

Wrapping up this week 3 for me, I would have to say I expected a little better fight out of Bethel today. Warwick pretty much took them to the cleaners.

I see Handley made easy work of Brentsville District to move to 3-0 on the season. I think the absolute worst Handly will end up is 7-3. Those three questionable games are against Sherando, Kettle Run, and John Wood. And I expect them to win one of those three, if not two.

Oh, one last one. I sure as heck didn’t see Southampton beating Petersburg. That might be one of the biggest surprises this week. Southampton had beaten John Marshall, but you can’t go by that.

Colonial heights locks horns with Southampton this coming week and they need to win desperately to avoid going 0-4, and going into their brutal district slate. CH could easily end the season 1-9 or 0-10.

The three games you listed that are questionable are honestly the only 3 games that they are going against a quality opponent. I use quality opponent loosely when discussing James Wood, because Wood's schedule is just as weak. Hadley faces Westmoreland, wasn't Westmoreland a single A school last year? I know the old saying is you can only play who they put in front of you but my understanding is the AD and head coach discuss who to schedule. They did this last year and it bit them. They played Kettle Run and lost, then finished the regular season with a loss to Sherando and then traveled to Salem. Three tough opponents-3 losses

I agree fully. You can’t help your District schedule, but you certainly have options on OOD.
It can be difficult to sign opponents, but you start working on that as soon as your current schedule is inked.

Of course the AD and Head Coach need to be on the same page, but then both need to start chatting it up with other coaches and AD’s.

A good example of what you are saying about Handlely’s schedule is Class 5 Prince George. Before the current era with legendary head coach Hall, PG would sign on to play 3 historically weak opponents. They would start out 3-0 or at worse, 2-1 every year, then often not win a single district game. And the Central District has three Class 3 teams, so that tells you how ill prepared they were.

It’s the old adage, “ to be the best you have to beat the best”.

My dad was a high school AD for 34 years. I know from talking to him and taking a great interest in his work that it can be very difficult at times finding OOD games. That said, when I saw Westmoreland is playing Handley this week that was a head scratcher for me. There doesn't seem to be much to gain for either team from playing this game except they have a 10th game and Handley should get an easy win. It kind of reminds me of Westmoreland playing Eastern View a few years ago. Have a good one!

A tip of my hat to your dad. That’s a lengthy career as an AD. You just don’t see that anymore.

My neighbor and very good friend was the AD here for a number of years. And I’ve stayed involved with athletics at the school through three more AD’s. All were good, but the one we have now is terrific.

Through the years I’ve seen some of the frustration involved with locking down games. Everyone is looking for an opponent that makes the best sense for them, and the process drags on sometimes. And occasionally you get the last minute change of heart. But, it’s all just part of the process.

One of our goals here at Dinwiddie is to do our best to make to make every visitor feel welcome.
I always hope they go home saying “what a nice bunch of folks, and the horse, and the cannon and siren added to the excitement, even if we did get beat!!! We like to think that the fan experience makes it just a little easier to have schools agree to scheduling us.
