Caroline hanging 83 on JR Tucker sure caught my eye. Caroline can compete with good tough teams now, and JR…, well JR is not one of those. Still, 83 is a lot of points. I’ll be curious how many of those points were scored after the starters were pulled.

King George getting trounced was not a surprise. Sad, but not unexpected.

Matoaca and Bird getting soundly whipped was notable. Matoaca lost a ton from graduation, so the consensus was that they would struggle this year. But Bird not only getting beat, but shut out, wow. And the reports are that Bird AND the coaching staff had serious discipline problems that cost them dearly in yards and an ejection of a coach.

A game that I expected to be a slugfest, actually was!!! Battlefield came from behind with :47 left in the game to beat N Stafford, 14-13. We have a bit of familiarity with both of these teams, so we followed it with some interest. We have scrimmaged Battlefield for serval seasons, and N Stafford was on our schedule for the previous four seasons. Both are top tier teams this year and both are likely to make a deep run in the playoffs.

Petersburg trounced Henrico! My, times have changed.

Sherando put a hurting on Amherst. Poor Wikki!

83 was a popular number last night. Did you see that Manchester beat Monacan 83-13?

I was expecting a better showing out of Coach Hall’s Prince George Royals than what occurred last night. Glen Allen is a good team, but I though the Royals could keep it more respectable than 42-6.

Tiny little Windsor won their opener. Windsor is that small little town that you blow through on 460 E when you head to the beach. An opening night win is big for them. In fact, any win is big for them.

Let’s see what notables come out of tonight’s games. I’m sure there will be a few.

How about you? Did any games across our great state make you sit up and take notice?

The scoreless defensive struggle between Stone Bridge - James Madison through 3 1/2 quarters.

Louisa winning impressively against Mills Godwin without their #1 running back in the nation

The nail-biting comebacks of Battlefield (North Stafford) and Heritage - Leesburg (Lightridge)

I concur on Bird and Matoaca

And lastly - some of the eye popping numbers put up last night

I started to mention the Stone Bridge game. If you are a fan of defense, you would have loved that game.

Speaking of notable performances, Dinwiddie’s new QB, Zion Boisseau (2027), was 20 for 22 with three TD’s passing and two more rushing. He made excellent decisions all night and was poised and never got happy feet. We are very optimistic about his continued development.

Thank you Pizzzzza and Matt for the scoring updates.

The fact that Essex allowed 22 points against Sussex Central when those games are usually blow outs with Sussex usually not scoring double digit points
I’ve heard that Sussex has some much better athletes this season. That might have something to do with it.

Not surprised by Windsor with Head Coach Benjamin Dubois, who was a winner when he coached at Portsmouth Christian.

Stone Bridge had over 200 yards of offense, but penalties (false starts) did them in. They reached the Madison 14-yard line, but fumbled a snap, followed by a false start, which killed the drive. Then they reached the Madison 19, but back-to-back false starts again stopped a scoring drive. I recorded 14 penalties, and I probably missed a few that were declined.

Denbigh losing to Manor was what surprised me the most. I either had Denbigh too high or Manor too low. I saw Manor at a team camp and felt they would be similar to the team that won a single game last year and had four wins in the past four years. Denbigh not only has a Power 5 quarterback, but a Rivals 3-star receiver, a lineman with a Wake Forest offer, and a cornerback with an offer from Syracuse.

Prince George had some miscues early that gave Glen Allen a short field to work with. New QB for Royals looked shaky. I'm sure they will get better but it was surprising to see a Coach Hall led team have that tough a start.

I’m glad to see Windsor with a winning coach and a chance to change the culture. And Franklin won their opening game too. Not very often that those two teams both win, especially on opening night.

I don’t know anything about the head coach at Stone Bridge, but like Danny said about Coach Hall at PG, I’m surprised at that many critical mistakes. I just assume a school like Stone Bridge has an experienced, veteran coach?

I’m disappointed to see the debacle at LC Bird. The arrow there has to point directly at the head coach.

I was really disappointed to see Andre Jones out as the AD at Charles City. I don’t know all the facts, but it sure looks like petty politics and favoritism forced Dre’s hand. They lost a good, caring man.
Charles City County and CCPS have a history of making bad decisions. They recently let a potential gold mine slip through their fingers. A “mega” data center was all but breaking ground, and politics led to the developers throwing their hands up and going elsewhere.

Will, I was shocked at Denbigh’s loss too.

Oh well, let’s see what kind of excitement tonight’s games bring.

Watched Hayfield and Mount Vernon last night. Neither team has full accurate rosters online and even the PA guy didn't have the player names. Not long ago you could get actual programs at these games. MV probably in the drivers seat for the National District championship with the late win.

Washington-Liberty putting 55 points on Bishop O'Connell in their first meeting since 1983. O'Connell is not very good at football but W-L graduated their QB and star receiver so it's a good early sign that they can build on last year's success.

James Wood beat Clarke County 44-3. Clarke lost pretty much their whole team last year, but the score surprised me given how consistently good the Eagles are.

Handley went to Eastern View and won 23-9 without their starting QB playing. I thought they would be underdogs with him out, but apparently not.

Good showing by the Winchester-area teams this weekend (except Millbrook).

Stone Bridge coach is an 11-year NFL Vet and retired Washington Redskin DL Kedric Golston. His son is a 4-star commit to Tennessee.

21-6 is not a blow out😂
Score was 21-0 before Huguenot scored. It wasn't close. Biggest thing that showed was Huguenot won't be able to hold up, up front when the going gets tough. Varina's front will overwhelm them if they meet again. The QB has a big arm but he’s more of a classic pocket passer that can't escape the rush.

It was very surprising seeing talks of breaking scoring records and all of those D1 athletes couldn't get open.

Throw in Louisa struggling to stop a middling Godwin team and i think Varina and Dinwiddie are on another collision course.

Yeah seeing them talking about breaking scoring records was …interesting. We just have different definitions of what a blowout is cause I see it as a game that’s wasn’t competitive.

Either way, it wasn’t a good look to go out and lose by double digits against a team that you barely earn any power points from. In a region where you probably gonna need all points you can get. And not like Huguenot plays in the toughest of districts either. Still wish that had scheduled HSHS for week 1

Your Springers looked sharp last night and it's good see the RB Byrd looking healthy. How you think you guys stack up for next week?

Yeah it was good to see that he put some muscle on. I’m a lot more encouraged now after last night, I’m confident we can find a way to win but both sides of the line better bring their big boy pants. If we can’t handle the trenches, I don’t think it’ll be close.

I couldn’t believe Godwin was moving the ball like that Louisas CBs struggled all night. They won without Hiter but giving 26 to Mills Godwin …….. yeah

My guy!

I’m with you but Godwin isn’t no slouch. They have an Ohio State commit on that O-Line and my guy Earl Kinney has them playing big boy football. Godwin is sneaky good and could make some noise in 5C.

More of what caught my eye.

The G-Men took the loss against Bluefield. I don’t know if this is a surprise, but I fully expect to see a couple of posters go at it tooth and nail again this week. (I just hope they keep it in check and the editor doesn’t have to step in again!)

Sad that GW had to start the season with a loss. But Reidsville ain’t no slouch.

WOW, how about that old fashion butt whipping that Indian River put on Granby. I was shocked.

I see the King George staff got their first win as the new Spotsylvania staff. Admittedly, it was over the hapless Fluco’s.

Speaking of old fashion whippings, Glenvar hung 70 unanswered points on Galax. I don’t guess Galax has made any changes to turn their fortunes around.

Happy to see Hurley start their final season with a win.

I’ll stop for now with this one. I know Lafayette is a really good team again, but I expected a much better showing from Smithfield. Maybe Lafayette is just that good?

Graham losing to Bluefield is not a shock. It's a 100 year plus crosstown rival game with Graham losing to an 11 time West Va State champion that has been down for about 3 or 4 years, but looks to be back to its usual self. Even in the last few years, the games with Bluefield and Graham were nailbiters. It's been that way in most games for decades. Bluefield is good and was the better team. Graham's youth showed with several dropped passes and snaps over the QBs head and the starting QB for Graham getting hurt and not playing the entire 2nd half, and being replaced with a freshman (who is going to be dynamite). Bluefield outplayed Graham and deserved to win. Graham is going to be very solid. By week 5 or 6, a different team. Bluefield High, WV will be in the mix for another possible 12th WV AA state title. But for last night, the better team won the football game and deserved to win. They outplayed Graham. Not a shock. An upset? Yes, but not a shock or major upset if you know the history of this 10,000 fan-appearing on average annual series thats been going on for over 100 years in the Bluefields. In 2018 when we beat Goochland for the state title, Bluefield beat us in game 1 that year. The Gmen are down, but not out. Lots of incredibly talented youth at the skilled positions for Graham that are super talented, but very raw. Grahams got a solid chance to have another special season,

Northwood smacking Twin Springs in Saltville certainly turned some heads down here in Smyth County.

Chilhowie bouncing Marion wasn't a surprise. The Scarlet Hurricane have become more of a Scarlet letter here recently.
