I’ve heard that Sussex has some much better athletes this season. That might have something to do with it.
Sussex was young last year and having a new coach but still made the playoffs. They returned a lot of their players from last year. As for Essex, they lost 7 starters from last seasons defense.

Caroline hanging 83 on JR Tucker sure caught my eye. Caroline can compete with good tough teams now, and JR…, well JR is not one of those. Still, 83 is a lot of points. I’ll be curious how many of those points were scored after the starters were pulled.

King George getting trounced was not a surprise. Sad, but not unexpected.

Matoaca and Bird getting soundly whipped was notable. Matoaca lost a ton from graduation, so the consensus was that they would struggle this year. But Bird not only getting beat, but shut out, wow. And the reports are that Bird AND the coaching staff had serious discipline problems that cost them dearly in yards and an ejection of a coach.

A game that I expected to be a slugfest, actually was!!! Battlefield came from behind with :47 left in the game to beat N Stafford, 14-13. We have a bit of familiarity with both of these teams, so we followed it with some interest. We have scrimmaged Battlefield for serval seasons, and N Stafford was on our schedule for the previous four seasons. Both are top tier teams this year and both are likely to make a deep run in the playoffs.

Petersburg trounced Henrico! My, times have changed.

Sherando put a hurting on Amherst. Poor Wikki!

83 was a popular number last night. Did you see that Manchester beat Monacan 83-13?

I was expecting a better showing out of Coach Hall’s Prince George Royals than what occurred last night. Glen Allen is a good team, but I though the Royals could keep it more respectable than 42-6.

Tiny little Windsor won their opener. Windsor is that small little town that you blow through on 460 E when you head to the beach. An opening night win is big for them. In fact, any win is big for them.

Let’s see what notables come out of tonight’s games. I’m sure there will be a few.

How about you? Did any games across our great state make you sit up and take notice?

I think Caroline will make the 4B playoffs and Looking at their schedule and if they can stay healthy they are favorite in every game. With Hugenot losing they have to win out and Louisa winning m. I can see them getting a 3-6 seed in the playoffs.

King George has a lot of work to do. I hear that their JV team is not that bad so it sounds like they have some building blocks for the future.

Petersburg is another team in class 3. They got some pieces and might be able to make a run in region.

I see a Manchester vs Oscar Smith Showdown in the region championship game. For Manchester with Oscar Smith losing to Gonzaga it’s a must they go undefeated and get that game in the 804. OS probably won’t lose another game in the regular season and if Manchester lose a game then it can go either way but if they can play like they did Friday watch out they look very explosive.

LC bird don’t have a QB so when they play a teams that can contain the run it puts more pressure on their defense to preform at a high level. It might be a long season for them until they figure that out and also they have to be more disciplined on that end as well.

I wasn’t expecting the Huguenot to St Chris. Hats off to them. They dominated that game and defensively they are going to be factor VISSA Division 1. Huguenot issue seems to be can their O- line hold up. Defensively they are sound and to hold an opponent to 14 points is not bad. If you take away the Pick 6 they threw they lose by 8. They have a big game in a few weeks against a Midlothian team that most likely will be Undefeated heading into that game and also end of the end of the season match up against Manchester who might be undefeated in that game as well.

I was at the Highland Springs vs Hopewell game. I wasn’t expecting the Springers to drop 68 on them and beat by 56 points. Defensive was flying around all night. EB look great. I’m curious to see how they match up this week vs Hough who will be tougher than Hopewell. Offensive was good but they don’t have a true QB but he is an athlete so I wonder how that will look against other quality opponents they will face this year.
