This is what passes for education at very liberal institutions.

Editorial: “Hostility may be warranted” towards people who engage in “hate speech”

This being said, the tone surrounding the current discourse is becoming increasingly hostile. Wellesley College is an institution whose aim is to educate. Students who come to Wellesley hail from a variety of diverse backgrounds. With this diversity comes previously-held biases that are in part the products of home environments. Wellesley forces us to both recognize and grow from these beliefs, as is the mark of a good college education. However, as students, it is important to recognize that this process does not occur without bumps along the way. It is inevitable that there will be moments in this growth process where mistakes will happen and controversial statements will be said. However, we argue that these questionable claims should be mitigated by education as opposed to personal attacks.

We have all said problematic claims, the origins of which were ingrained in us by our discriminatory and biased society. Luckily, most of us have been taught by our peers and mentors at Wellesley in a productive way. It is vital that we encourage people to correct and learn from their mistakes rather than berate them for a lack of education they could not control. While it is expected that these lessons will be difficult and often personal, holding difficult conversations for the sake of educating is very different from shaming on the basis of ignorance.

This being said, if people are given the resources to learn and either continue to speak hate speech or refuse to adapt their beliefs, then hostility may be warranted. If people continue to support racist politicians or pay for speakers that prop up speech that will lead to the harm of others, then it is critical to take the appropriate measures to hold them accountable for their actions. It is important to note that our preference for education over beration regards students who may have not been given the chance to learn. Rather, we are not referring to those who have already had the incentive to learn and should have taken the opportunities to do so. Paid professional lecturers and politicians are among those who should know better.

Did you notice the word "Editorial"? Apparently not. It's just one person's thoughts, settle down. As usual you're too busy advocating for hate speech and too ashamed of the source to provide it.

Not just one person's opinion. It is happening all over the country. More importantly, how can any editorial claim that violence is the answer to speech you don't like? What has happened to liberalism. It is dying a very slow, painful death after being taken over by radicals.

smh That editorial was written by one person though you call it "education" and attribute it to numerous colleges. You sound crazier than the person who wrote it but you're both entitled to your opinions. You're also ashamed to provide a link to the source you're using and that's understandable. Of course the word "violence" is never mentioned in the editorial though "hostility" is. You can be hostile toward a person without laying a hand on them. Learn to read and lighten up on the conspiracy theories that you espouse.

Hostility is in the eye of the beholder. Do you want me to list campuses where conservative speakers have been ousted, attacked, silenced, etc. Many, many instances. You've got you head in the sand if you don't think this is happening all over the country and it is libs doing the attacking and silencing.

I am ashamed to provide a link? Do you dispute the accuracy of the editorial or its legitimacy?

Tucker Carlson's Daily Caller is a legit site regardless. At least as legitimate as ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC and CNN, not to mention the NY Times and Wash Post.

Stop being a snowflake. Maybe these speakers that you defend should come to campuses with messages that someone wants to hear. Apparently some conservative speakers are out of touch with many of today's youth. I saw a bonfire in Sunnyside that looked a lot like that. Imo pointing to Berkeley is weak since the primary instigators of the real chaos weren't students there and came from Oakland. Berkeley is about all you got in terms of big drama. You also act like these runoff speakers can't be heard/read unless they're on campus. Somehow these poor college students will survive being deprived on that day of the words of someone that they had no interest in hearing from.

You must either live in the wilderness or are completely oblivious to what is happening in the world around you. I gave you,as I said, one example, one small example, in Berkeley. There are many, many more all over the country. And it was not just a bonfire there was an enormous amount of property description and assaults on individuals.

And your defense of students actions is absolutely appalling as they try to destroy the First Amendment. I thought you were a liberal.
