actually I went to the Softball game.Great thing about softball is that the west side grandstand overlooks the practice fields. It's aheckuvaplace to watch practice.

A few observations:

I'd be surprised if Relf isn't our QB on a fulltime basis. Russell, to his credit, is not the turtle he's made out to be - he can move around a little bit. Relf just looks better in all facets of the game.

We'll miss Dixon. Ballard will be steady and reliable. Perkins shows flashes of big play ability. But, there areno Dixons to be found. Theoption was toughto defend withDixon and Relf in the backfield. Without the threat of Dixon,Relf isn't going to havethe lanes hehad last fall.

Our WRs, as a group, are average. Is there a legit deep threat? Bumphis is a special player, but I don't know that he can blow by SEC DBs. Losing Wilder hurts. If we had that one guy that could stretch the defense then this group would be pretty good, but I don't think we do.

As has been reported everywhere, the DL is indeed SEC quality. I doubt we get pushed around. As for the LBs, I hope the Russian mobster turns out to be a quality player but he wasn't on the field a whole lot yesterday. White and KJ are proven, but is there any depth? Didn't look like it.

I bet Banks ends up being an elite DB at some point in his career. As a group the DBs are a strength.

of Russell, and yet you typed it and hit "post" anyway. Your assessment does not portend well for the Russell crowd.

I knew something wasn't right in Denmark when he left the Elite 11 camp in 08 without an offer from Saban.

lots of tools, like stated above, more mobile than I expected, but...something just isn't clicking. Not yet. Just doesn't look very comfortable, doesn't seem to find a rhythm at all.

Now this: I forget that he's been on a college campus for about 8 months. I expect things to get easier for him. But right now, just hasn't happened yet.

Another way to look at this though, is if the defense is taking the lanes away from Relf, it will open up lanes for the RB's. Relf just has to know when to pitch it.

I do think we'll miss Dixon though.

has to be a Henig level douche.

Wasn't he the narcissistic piece of **** who separated himself from his team after losing the white bread academy championship game and went down to the end zone to be alone and sulk?

BDJ say there were lots of spots on D where they were shuttling in 2s and 3s with the first unit to see how they would respond. Forget who they said was taking Lawrence's LB reps, but Whitley at S and Jackson and Jones at DT did the same thing as far as practicing with the first team.

that are capable of running for at least 700 yards a piece, then I'm worried. I do think we will miss AD from an intangibles standpoint, but if we miss him from a production standpoint, then we have a HUGE problem.

JCDawgman has, not surprisingly, been pretty quiet this Spring...guess he sees it too

Remember that run in the Eggbowl where he powers his way down field and slams the ball on the goal line as he's being tackled? Someone else will need to play with that kind of intensity this year. Football isn't as clinical as some would like to think.

When Crxxms found Relf, he was running the 'Bone. Then he had Crxxms & Wxxdy coaching him down for 2 seasons. I remember a comment from Mullen last spring that Relf didn't have poor mechanics, he had NO mechanics. Said Relf never threw the ball the same way twice. He was a completely blank slate for Mullen to mold as a passer, mechanically speaking. Obviously, the guy has listened and busted his *** on his own to improve. He apparently has great work ethic. That alone can overcome a lot of deficiencies. And it's not like Relf doesn't have the arm to be a good QB. I'd love to see how good he could be had Mullen had him from the start or even as a RS FR.

if Relf becomes a star in the SEC.

On top of that, you hear about Relf having no mechanics, and it makes you wonder what the hell was going on when Croom was here.

Whatever it was, it sure wasn't coaching. Granted, Relf hadn't thrown much when Crxms signed him. But we all saw how EVERY QB regressed in the Crxxms Error. Without exception, the best year for any QB we had was Year 1. I think it was a case of sheer incompetence. I'm pretty sure we didn't have a single coach on the offensive side of the ball that had actually coached QBs before, but I'm too lazy to look that up. Crxxms himself was essentially a career RBs coach, so he certainly had no clue how to coach up a QB. The guy on staff that was probably most qualified to coach our QBs was Rockey, simply by virtue of having played the position at the college level. How sad a statement is that?

we had Freddie Kitchens on our staff. He played QB at Bama. We also had Casey Clausen at one point in time as well.

The QB was to hit Crxxm going up the sideline, riding full speed in his golf cart, witha Shipley's Doughnut. Meanwhile, Woody would be behind the QB holding the pastry box licking the leftover glaze and saying things like "Drop the hand and elbow down and get more 'side-to-side' spin on the bal...er, doughnut. Make it spin like a frisbee discus and it'll go further" or some other pearls of wisdom like that. (That is how I imagine it too have been)
