We're losing Bell over an ACT

Devon Bell is not eligible. It's ACT score, not GPA. He may have time to retake it, but the rumor is he'll end up at Memphis. He would have been a good get, but another scholly could be useful if Mullen, Wilson, etc. finish strong on recruiting.

.... but if true, there's a good one at Washington School that would be a good get: Hayden Lewis.<div>
</div><div>Not sure if he's signed anywhere right now or not, but he had MS State high on his list last year.</div>

It's the conference standard not NCAA. It's also 8 months too early to say we're losing someone to an ACT score unless the staff wants everyone qualified by signing day, or Bell refuses to take it again.

Back in the day of partial qualifiers, the SEC didn't allow schools to take a partial qualifier even though the NCAA did. And with the new hard 25 limit for the SEC, even if the standards are the same, it make it a whole lot harder for a school to take a chance on a kid that might not qualify. Other schools can simply sign about 30 and figure that half of the 10 questions probably won't make it. If more do, they just ask one or two to grayshirt. You can't do that in the SEC. You can only sign 25 and if one doesn't make it, you've only got 24. So yeah, it absolutely has that sound of truthiness to it.

If he never makes the score, then he loses his spot at State. Sounds like right now he has a guaranteed scholly offer Memphis

Has several more times to take it before enrolling. Unless he took it in December, he has no more chances before signing day.

Surely having a top-notch kicker would be worth the risk unless someone we hadn't counted on committed in Feb. Right?
This is disappointing news. How long has this problem been going on that it hasn't already been rectified? Goodness.

You just never really know which ones will make the adjustment to the narrower goal posts and kicking without a tee and which ones won't. And someone's already posted that he's not the most accurate kicker anyway. If he doesn't have his ACT by signing day, we need to either sign another kicker or offer him a preferred walk-on spot. I'd rather have Art Mordecai's kid anyway. From what I've seen he's a real good kicker and his parents are both good people and good Bulldogs.

A guy who can put it consistently in the end zonenis almost worth two scholarships. We out gained auburn by about 150 yds but it was negated by avg starting field position because their kickoffs/ coverage was so superior to ours. If you can consistently put it in the end zone that's one guy taking care of ten others. If you can score you are talking about 60-100 yards a game.

My two oldest kids took it last month. My 11th Grade Son (who hates taking tests, and has some learning disabilities) made a 21, while my 10th grade, 15 year old daughter made a 26. </bragging>

Point is, how hard is it to make enough on an ACT?

P.S. How do you get in touch with Admissions officials about a five-star academic recruit? My daughter is the academic equivalent of a 6' 3", 290 lb., 5.0 40, benches 325 lb. sophomore who will blossom into a 6'5",340 lb., 4.4 40, benching 450 and squat 750 five-star Senior.

doing what our offense could not

yes, the defense won us some of those games, but 1999 proves your statement false.

Regardless if he doesn't make it or not, which I believe he will cause he still has several opportunities to make an 18, I don't believe we will be coming in empty handed without a good kicker. Mullen has been recruiting Evan sobiesk from Oak Grove for months and months trying to get him to walk-on. The kid has a bomb leg as well and is a great field goal kicker I believe will start next year. I have heard that Bell's ACT score was too low, but still has opportunities to change that.

I said that it's a very hit-and-miss thing to project which HS kickers will make the adjustment. And since his accuracy, even in HS, has been questioned, we should look at signing a differenct kicker, like Art Mordecai's son.

As for the comment the other guy made about having a kicker who can put the ball into the end zone, I agree that's important, but again he's got to adjust to kicking off a 1" tee vs a 2" tee and kicking from the 30 instead of the 40. If we're going to be spending a scholarship on a kicker just for his kickoffs, he'd better be consistently putting the ball through the uprights on HS kickoffs, and not just deep in the end zone.

He may be doing that, and he may be a great signee for us. But with the scholarship restrictions and the risk associated with projecting any HS kicker to college, I think it;s rare that it would be worth it to spend a scholarship on a kicker who might not qualify.
