What has happened to this program can anybody tell me. They only have like 21 players. They have hired a coach that has a record of 10-72. I never thought I would see the day that this program would get so bad and nobody cares. But thanks to an administration that has failed the kids and the community. All the football players go to Hibriten now and who can blame them because they want to win. This administration at West should be replaced with one that is committed to building a football program.

That’s not the point. They got their first win against a terrible team. And a team that more than likely want win a game. If you don’t see the point then move on.

Transferred.
There's your key word. With LEA's (local school systems) becoming more and more permissive in allowing these (ostensibly for 'academic' reasons), it has destroyed loyalty to one's home-district schools. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. And, it's not just Caldwell County...look statewide and you'll see the same nearly everywhere.

The end result, I'm afraid, is you're going to see some of these schools that are being gutted by transfers drop football in future years.

The point is obvious. It's also easy to be happy for these kids who have lost so many the past few years.

The point is you don’t get the point.
Their struggles are obvious and there is no point. I know a lot about struggling football programs being a McDowell grad. And you have no empathy. What are you doing to help the school be more successful?

There struggles continue because of the administrations poor choices. Being from McDowell you don’t have a clue what has went on in Caldwell County. They have let the program get so bad it’s going to take a coach a lot of time to build a program. And you say I have no empathy you have no brain. And for you asking what I’m doing to help the school be more successful. How can I help when the administration has done nothing but make it worse. But why should I care because nobody else does.

I never said I knew about the Caldwell situation but I know about struggling foothills football programs. How can a fan not be happy when your team wins after losing for 2 straight years? I would hate to be that miserable

Another thing this sorry school board in Caldwell County don’t go by the rules that they set and always caters to Hibriten. So think what you want but you have no clue what has went on in this county. They let players living out of Hibritens district go there and the sad thing everybody knows it and does nothing.

It goes on everywhere. AC Reynolds has done it for decades. We call them the WNC all star team. Funny thing is they still get beat most years even with plucking most of their players from elsewhere. If the coach’s from neighboring schools had the talent coming in they do, they would win many more games. Most years ACR does less with more. Sure they win in WNC but when they come off the mountain they find it tough sledding. I hate that program much like you hate Hibriten. Nothing anyone can do about it. It does suck though. McDowell has had their share of losing stud players to other schools as well. I feel your pain as a fan of Owen. Getting mad at someone from McDowell about it isn’t going to fix it. Kyle probably knows as well as anyone what it’s like to lose for long periods of time and think it’s gotta get better somehow and it just doesn’t for whatever reason.

This is BS. I know 3 kids by name that had to sit out a year before they could play at Hibriten. I could also name several kids that left Hibriten to play both football and Basketball at West and didnt sit out a day.

And here we go, another crying West fan who seems to forget the 80s and 90s when all the athletes left William Lenoir and went to West instead of Hibriten.

But that has nothing to do with now- The demographic makeup of the West district isn't what it used to be, the population is less as well so you don't have the pool of individuals to pull from. Those are facts, it has 0 to do with transfers.

There’s a lot of stuff that impacts the football program at west, I mean let’s be honest who’s moving to gamewell? It gets frustrating hearing that it’s always the coaches fault well reality check we’ve had 11 coaches since 2004 with only 2 winning seasons so is it really the coach. We have some people in place that’s trying really hard to get things turned around from the bottom to the top it will just take time and patience. As far as transfers go it’s the new normal get used to it kids will go to we’re their going to win period, what are we doing to keep kids at west what are we doing as a community to make these kids want to be at west exactly not very much bottom line is the community is the problem it’s been this way for years. So instead of complaining about the administration and coaching how about getting with the community and start making a difference.

A couple of months ago I posted about the transfer portal and all the schools it impacts for better or worse. Seemingly it is getting worse around the Foothills and surrounding area but that is just my opinion. I am not defending either school in Caldwell County or anywhere for that matter. The facts are that Programs win championships not individuals. I really hope that West Caldwell can turn its Football misfortunes around with this new coach they have. Wishing the same for McDowell as well.

As also mentioned in a post months ago. Something needs to happen with this. Transfers have always been a part of High school athletics wether its family moves, academics, or personal reasons. The current rules in place in my opinion are being exploited in ways that hurt the integrity of High school sports. The reason I believe the state should act, but probably won't lets be honest, is because one, it creates a unfair advantage competitively, two, undermines the educational mission, but I understand the arguments against my case, three, Weakens schools programs and puts coaches from other schools in no win situations, four, enforcement is too lax or nonexistent as I have seen from certain school boards or systems argue that one all you want!! Five, precedent from other states such as Georgia, Texas, among others who have taken tougher stances on enforcement if rules are broken. Lastly, if the State Board doesn't step in and enforce some rules on this it will widen the gap between the values of what High School athletics is or all about which is development through learning fundamentals and how to play the game or sport along with Community pride and a good support system which you lose. This isn't about punishing kids and shouldn't be, but rather keeping the focus on what High School sports are all about which is creating a level playing field!!

The community is not to blame the only blame on the community is not speaking up. I guess nobody cares. As far as the transfers they should go by the rules that they put in place and stop breaking them. It’s very sad to me to see what has happened to the football program at West. I blame the administrators and the school system for letting this happen.

What’s the point of having kids in the program that doesn’t won’t to be there? For years we’ve had kids walk the hallways that are really good athletes and since they couldn’t transfer for whatever reason they just didn’t play. Plain and simple a big problem is the parents it’s almost impossible to coach these kids due to the fact of them going home telling mommy and daddy someone was mean to them or whatever the case may be. Then if they don’t get their way they transfer we had kids transfer this year to other programs and they are barely seeing the field but their winning football games. I’m not a Hibriten guy but they build their program from first grade to their all on the same page they have stability it’s hard to have stability at west being we get a new coach every 2-3 years cause no one wants to be patient and they build their program program. But unless you walk the halls at west everyday you don’t have a clue what the problem is so that’s that
