I'll pass on making specific comments on GW, but I stand by my vague comments. I hope that both HC snd OPRF have deep playoff runs this year. These are 2 teams that are playing their guys out to win games, which is a quality I always admired in past GW teams.

Going to be a tough playoff season for the WSS. Down year and a few beasts in their collective paths.

Yep, but if OPRF can find a way to get through game 2, they have a shot at getting to game 5. I can see HC playing at least 2 games in the playoffs.

That's been the issue - the Huskies haven't gotten past the second round since 1986. Class 8A is always a difficult challenge with so many teams capable of winning it all.

That said, assuming OPRF gets by NT, and then upsets Rice in the second round, I can see them playing in Champaign on Thanksgiving weekend.

Question, huge respect for both programs, not trying to start trouble, just an observation. For those of us who watched the OPRF/GW game...while it was a "BIG," well-earned, well-played win for OPRF, from the perspective of the season, standing and stature, in some ways it wasn't so "big." Yes, obviously the only stat that matters is the "W," and OPRF earned it, no doubt. However, didn't GW outgain the Huskies 310-221 in total yardage with a 16 to 9 first down advantage? Other than the outstanding 72-yard TD, I don't think the Huskies ever made it past West's 20 yard line. OPRF was great, seemed to be wearing GW down as the game went on and that D is stellar...credit to both outstanding teams, good luck in playoffs.

No worries. The offense is still a concern to me. The running game with McGill, Bryant, and Robinson will be fine. But youl need to have balance in the playoffs - even with the weather turning colder. Now, I'm not suggesting OPRF needs to throw 25 to 30 times per game, but if the Huskies can throw 15 or 20 times and complete at least 60% of those passes, their chances of offensive success go up. Personally, I feel the formula for success is at least 200 yards rushing plus at least 150 yards passing.

In the final analysis, OPRF used heart, character, and focus to overcome GW's statistical performance. OPRF played harder, in all 4 qtrs, than GW. Caring more--not just about the game, but for your teammates and coach--often is the difference maker.

After reflecting more on what I think you're saying, I have a better response. You're suggesting that the OP win wasn't a 'big' win because they were out gained in yards and first downs. But I think you are conflating two uses of the word 'big' in this context. There's one use where a 'big win' means domination by one team. There's another use where a 'big win' just means that it was a milestone for a program. The discussion on the board about OPRF's 'big' or 'huge' win has without doubt been used in the latter sense of that word. No one has suggested that OP dominated GW or won 'big' in the sense you're concerned with. Nor would it be reasonable to think so.

I agree with that. I think the OPRF coaching staff have done an excellent job working with the QB, especially since the HC game. The kid is calmer and gives his receivers a little more time in their routes before throwing. If he has time to throw, their offense starts to click. I'd be optimistic about the next few weeks.

OPRF has no history of success in the playoffs. I can’t see that changing with the draw they got. I will stick by my prediction that all of the conference is done after week 2. No great team and the draw will do them no favors

While history is on Silverhelmets side when it comes to postseason success, I will note that OPRF has never had a better combination of defensive scheme & smart LBs to run the scheme. They have broken into uncharted territory and carried that young QB past a few early season hiccups. As QB grows more confident that his D has his back, he will continue to calm his play. Funny thing about young QBs is once they smell success they start to believe in themselves, then lookout.

So my vote is a victory over NT in another 10-7 rock-em-sock-em bruiser won by special teams, followed by the upset for the ages as OPRF trips up BR. Warren takes down HC in Round 2 and Warren OPRF fight to a 7-3 finish. Don’t know who pulls that off but.

Regarding West, I was out of town but I never read anything into a GW PW game. That is West’s fun week where off the field team events kind of distract in the short term but payoff in the playoffs. I’m gonna say I think West can eek out a victory at Barlett and hosts the Beast on Duchon in Round 2. Hard to say which game would unfold. I just hope it isn’t a LA ‘16 semi style game. That wasn’t fun.

GBW will blow by Bartlett.

LWE at Duchon is interesting since a sloppy field is the great playoff equalizer and GBW style of play will give them an advantage. If I’m GBW I make sure my kids are practicing all over the field so that it’s mucked up come round 2.

No worries, I looked out there this morning and they removed the sprinkler heads so water can have a more direct path to the field. I expect 3-5” of “rain” on the field by game time.

Weekend Takeaways:

York 14 DGN 7: Glad to see York finish a tough season off on a high note. Bummed to see DGN go down and the WSS not have a representative in 7A. The best way to vindicate the toughness and respectability of these two teams will be for the WSS to represent well in 8A. @Dual-triple_threat and @Magnum Opus What was the game like? Which players played? Also, if it's not asking too much, could you guys give some thoughts about what to expect from the Dukes in 2019? Been a pleasure to have your contributions this year and hope we can do it again next fall.

PW 6 GW 28/35: I've seen both scores so not sure which the official one is. Anyways, I know @chuck998 expressed some disappointment with the outcome of this one. Could you say more about it? Did the GW offense struggle? @SilverHelmets seems to have more of an optimistic look on it. What're you guys thinking about a Bartlett match up? Looks like the Beast might await round 2. As always would love to get a sound byte from @capnbillhitters

HS 12 HC 21: Hinsdale South is a good 6A team, a good team in general. They have a couple tall and athletic WRs. Their QB was likely the best athlete on the field last night, and his throwing confidence seems to me to have increased remarkably since I last saw him versus LT earlier on this season. However other than the QB scrambling around and making guys miss to pick up chunks of yards the HC defense was more or less dominant. The HC D also had to bail out the offense on a couple bad turnovers, one coming almost immediately after a long defensive series by HC, which led to the first HS TD. HC brought their safeties real deep into the box on the first couple plays of the 2nd half and HS rifled off an easy 70 yard TD run on a read option give to RB up the middle. After that the HS offense didn't threaten in the 2nd half. Offensively HC had a decent size advantage and the oline produced as they have every game. They also passed the ball well. RB #5 Bobak looked the best I had seen him this year and had a handful of eyebrow raising trucks, including 3 on a nice 44yd TD run. I hope he brings that same level of intensity next week.

As of now Soucie has HS playing ND round 1. That will be a hell of a game. Soucie just redid 8A and has Nequa Valley traveling to Hinsdale Central. That will also be one hell of a game. I'm stoked.

LT 0 OPRF 48: As expected. Tough year for LT and I'm sure those boys will be getting into the weight room with a big chip on their shoulder heading into the winter and spring months. Father @Guido Sarducci , any thoughts about what to expect from LT going into 2019? I'm wishing for the best for the boys who weren't able to play much this year going forward (the talented LT QB in particular), and pray that there is a reason by which it was all for the best.

@OPRF Illini 96 , New Trier is not a pushover and of course neither is Brother Rice, but I assume you've got to be feeling relieved by the Beast going down to the other half of the bracket (Edit: just saw your most recent post). After a huge win at GW and a no non-sense running clock over LT plus Horester back on the sideline, I am inclined to believe that OPRF is ready to turn a corner here. The defense can stop the run versus just about anybody with that Dfront. If McGill can make the right reads and runs his tail off, who knows?
Kitty..and All,

Love this thread and I have a feeling I will be around for the next four years (I have an 8th grader who's not a QB...lol).

No surprise..my son was "QB 1". This game was much like week one vs New Trier. It came down to QB play and York got the edge in this game. This was a great game to watch...INSANELY competative. It was great to have QB 1 healthy the last two games and it showed what could have been for York just like weeks 1 -3. The GBW masacre hangover lasted to long and kept too many players out for too long. What could have been? Good news...a 5-4 York team this year would have had them matched up against HF in round one. I'm glad the year is over...lol. side note...if York finishes 5-4...Brother Rice gets bumped down to 7A...now that's interesting.

DGN Jr. #7 Cassens will be the best player in WSS next year. He was the entire team this game at both QB and SS. He will have players around him next year as this is a young team...and will be much more experienced at QB. With that, he is the best SS I've seen all year. Wake up Edgy and cover this kid. Great kid...great family and Dad is a great Coach. DGN will be the front runner next season in WSS. Very well coached team...very classy program. Very hard nosed attitude. DGN 8-1/7-2 in 2019 and wins WSS (if not...2nd to OPRF).

York loses QB 1 and QB 2, as well as some pretty good Sr. Skill on offense and 10 Seniors on D. The Sophomore QB #1 Cote is a real special athlete who is learning to throw and is much more complete than any other QB at York. The other Soph QB can throw but makes big mistakes and simply isnt an athlete like Cote (the new QB 1) The OLine will be the real rock star for York next year. In fact, this line has the potential to be the best in the state...and simply HUGE. Also a great Jr and Soph RBs and two pretty good receivers back. I expect York to make the playoffs next year via the ground and ball control....because they will need to keep the Defense off the field until they mature. Defensive Coaching needs to be revamped with a new plan. Losing New Trier the 1st game and replacing it with Schaumburg should push this team back into the playoffs. York 6/3 5/4 in 2019.

Fitz will keep growing and get better as a Coach. The WSS Coaches really took it to him at times. I know he wont forget that. Expect an angrier Fitz next year...with a ton of wisdom. I dont see GBW ever pulling that crap again on York. Fitz brought a different attitude to this program...a different work ethic...and it showed. Hopefully 2018 is Genisis.

Last...Kitty...can you start a new thread next year? WSS Freshman Football? I like it...and on to College for my Sr...who is a classy kid..smart...and a damn good FB player who's had more life lessons in the past four years than any kid I know. I really loved this article which was great for he...and York and sims up where we think this program is headed:
