—Not the start that anybody wanted to deal with. He said that he really appreciated the fans that made the trip and made a great atmosphere. It’s painful that they couldn’t deliver a win. There is a book “Good to Great” but in there is where he first learned about a quote. Essentially he says that he has extreme faith that he is going to prevail and build a program here that is going to win long term but he isn’t blind to how they played Saturday and they are 0-1. They didn’t win any individual battles coaching or playing and their brutal reality is they were soundly defeated. They had three turnovers on offense and they didn’t play physical enough up front and weren’t good enough at quarterback. Didn’t play up to the standards on defense and special teams they didn’t play well outside kickoff return. They did start fast and the receivers won versus man coverage and on defense in the third quarter they played well. As they move forward they have to learn and grow. One game won’t ruin a season and today they are going to highlight a bunch of teams that lost a game and rebounded to have very good seasons. But they have to play better. It’s the first home game with fans.

—Brown understands the fans are frustrated but hope that they don’t give up on them after one game. They know a lot about Long Island due to coach AJ Jackson was there. Their players will be excited and it will be the biggest venue on the biggest stage. This isn’t necessarily about them it’s about West Virginia making improvements. On offense they are multiple and do a lot of misdirection and screens. Defensively they like to pressure and WVU didn’t handle it well on Saturday. On special teams they have a good kicker and have hit some kickoff returns. They’re going to play a lot of people this week and there’s a lot to look forward to this weekend.

—They plan to honor the 2020 seniors that weren’t able to have a senior day. In this building they have to improve and get better.

—Turnovers is the most critical. If they didn’t turn the football over they win. The second thing is they have to play more physical within the offensive line and they have to be more fundamentally sound at the quarterback position. And on defense you have to play good team defense. They had guys trying to make plays instead of playing within the scheme.

—Doege had 12 bad plays. It was 1/5 of his total snaps though which isn’t good. and the other thing that got lost in turnovers was that. They snapped the ball 80 times. He has to eliminate the negative plays and move better in the pocket. He has to move up in the pocket and they lost too many yards and they gave up too much edge pressure so they have to firm up the tackles.

—There was a check that wasn’t received on the first touchdown and the miscommunication led to that first long ball score. They weren’t disciplined enough.

—West Virginia didn’t do anything to get the Maryland quarterback out of rhythm. They have some good players and they won the game but they certainly didn’t help them.

—The way West Virginia played has changed the way that the Mountaineers will practice this week. They plan on being more physical and they can’t do things that hurt themselves.

—Brown said they didn’t have a lot of missed assignments. It was a tale of two sides. They didn’t have many missed assignments and it’s under five on offense but what they did was outside the receiver position and the tight end but offensive line was and quarterback wise they didn’t execute their fundamentals.

—The running back position was they had things they wanted to get Leddie Brown. They would have liked to play Justin Johnson more but the rhythm of the game didn’t allow it. Defense is where they have to do a better job subbing.

—Brown thought Akheem Mesidor and Sean Martin played well. They need to get a safety rotation and they have to get more out of the backups up front.

—Brown is hopeful for Tony Mathis but Mike O’Laughlin is still doubtful and hasn’t practiced yet. They are hoping they are going to have him limited this week and get him back in practice to have him play some snaps against Virginia Tech.

—Brown wasn’t surprised how the wide receivers played. The one thing they have to work on is making things happen after the catch but they were excited about how they won against man coverage.

—Brown saw Winston Wright at a camp at Mercer. They thought they had a chance when they were at Troy but he got power five offers. He has added weight and is stronger and more explosive. He never stopped his feet and were decisive in his decisions and hit it with speed.

—Brown said they probably should have gone to 10-personnel earlier in the game against Maryland. They had to play half the game at 10-personnel. They have to be able to run the ball better out of that look.

—Wyatt Milum earned the opportunity to go out there but that’s a tough game to go out as a true freshman. Front wise they had no idea what Maryland was going to do. He believes they’ll play better up front.

—Doege did some good things on the first drive he throws a great ball to Leddie and he does the rest. On the drive where they kicked the field goal he was right on the money. He is better but the things he has to get better at is he can’t make the bad plays worse. They have to do a better job moving up which is the pocket and his instincts must be better.

Big loss in a very winnable game. Glad to see he took blame for himself as head coach. There is plenty of it to go around. They don't win this next game by 4 or 5 TD`s it will be disappointing. I hope pulls Doege after first couple of series.

I would prefer he not start. But not my call.

Doege will play at least the First Half, so that he's ready to go vs. Va. Tech. If he plays well at all, then he'll start against the cHokies.

SOS. How many cliches can be used? Excuse. Excuse. Excuse. Had hopes for NB but he is a lightweight. WVU is close to a freefall with this guy.

I liked Stewart, but he was a not HC material. Great position coach and excellent for team morale, but he was not the right guy for the job.

I liked Dana less, but was willing to give him a chance. He seemed like he had a plan, but it was obvious he was also a position coach - OC.

I really liked and wanted to pin the next 20 years of WVU glory on Brown. He was saying the right things and making smart moves, or so it seemed in the beginning. I was willing to let there be a few busted seasons so long as I saw fundamentals improving.

But,

Brown is not the guy. I do not know what his problem is. Maybe he is young for years, maybe he is a just a small time coach on a stage too big for his skill level, maybe he is just doesn't see the problem and thinks WVU is good for 6 years and butt-load of money. Well, on the last one, he got that, his contract runs through 2026 and we added another 10 million or so to it.

Regardless of what his problem is, it should not be WVU's problem. I do not know what it is with our coaches of late that all turn out to be failures. But I think it starts with our AD's. Both Lyons and Luck made some stupid moves with contract extension when no such move was warranted. Perhaps, in addition to cutting Brown lose we send his Sugar Daddy packing with him.

You may be right, but 12 bad snaps is a lot for one game. If your left tackle had 12 bad snaps in a game, then your quarterback would be on life support.
Exactly. 2 fumbles by a RB will get you yanked. I don't get why this guy gets a free pass...

Brown isn't staying here 20 years win or lose. Lose and he's gone after 5 years. Win and he's gone after 5 years. Guarantee.

What a great well thought out post. Thanks.

I think Brown is the guy. Last year was a off year with the pandemic and not a free pass. This guy beats Va Tech in two weeks when ESPN throws them way up in the rankings since they need another ACC team in there, we are signing a different tune.

A way a coach can rebound is critical.

The VT game will tell Mountaineer fans alot. Really so will this Long Island game. If they eke out a win against LIU then even 2 wins may be a stretch.

Bottom line is a coach is there making millions not to "climb", but to get there. Brown hasn't even started hiking up the foothills 3 years in .

Overreaction

You have to see the total picture before saying things that are so concrete

There are some issues here. Cannot lie.
Starts at QB.
Is Greene developing? Why didn’t Brown bring in a QB from the transfer portal?
The importance of the position today forces the need for coaches who can put quality QBs on the field

But there are 11 more games
Isn’t like WVU is at the point where you say they cannot compete
They opened up against a P5 team and took a tough defeat on the road
If that is game is played 100 times I believe WVU wins that games around 45 times maybe an even 50/50 split

WVU now can prepare for VA Tech
Pretty much erase everything after week 1 if they can beat VA Tech at home

This is why it is an overreaction because WVU has a pretty good chance to make up for this early season defeat

All teams have up and down performance
Those 4-8 and 8-4 teams have ones that are very noticeable
Pretty much where WVU is right now. Right around the middle of CFB because they lack a difference maker at QB

Greene, now matter how green, put him in and let LI be the game to iron out the jitters.
People continue to say this. Might be right but I am interested if there is any verifiable proof that Greene could do a better job at moving the ball than Doege

Maybe Brown wants to show loyalty. I don’t really know his intentions

Plus looking at the transfer portal I don’t see one that is clearly better than Doege that WVU could have gotten

Brown knows the Brewer family as well. Coached Charlie’s brother at Tx Tech
But Charlie Brewer and Doege are almost identical
Tyler Slough is another one. Will have to see him more
But wasn’t impressed with him at Oregon last year

Yeah, I have no idea if he can move the ball better then Doege. I'm going off the appearance that not much has changed since last year. Let the QB's compete on the field.
