Dang, this blows. We are bleeding out. Mays was developing into a quality roll player and definitely added to our depth. Kind of concerned that Brown hasnt really benefited from the portal, other then Nester... I thought it was a golden opportunity to add a few critical pieces and quickly improve overall talent level. However, we are bleeding out...

Of course they are leaving! They see the writing on the wall! Barring injury they will never play! Those boys coming in are grown men and talented athletes! They will play and those guys will not. They are transferring now to find a place to start!

We have better. 14 linemen on scholarship. Will pick up 1 or 2 in spring. Not a big loss with what has been brought in so far.

Tell me the player who has entered the portal who who has been a major contributor and one expected to be one of the leaders of the team next year.

Tell me the player who has entered the portal who who has been a major contributor and one expected to be one of the leaders of the team next year.

Its not so much who has been a major contributor, but who was growing into one. Sinkfeld, Ali Jennings & Mays are probably the three who have the highest probability of being a significant contributor by their Jun/Sen yrs, OR quality depth pieces.

Turning over the roster when you are recruiting at higher levels is normal, so I fully expect some guys to leave because younger players coming in are just better with higher upside, and I understand Brown is building to be good long term, to get his recruits more playing time early on to increase their upside about the time his contract is to be renewed, its a long term plan I completely support, but you gotta have depth. Not everyone is a Zach Frazier who can practically start on the OL as a TrueFresh. Long term its not a big deal because Brown continues to recruit at higher levels, but it may hurt us a little next year if we are unlucky with injuries, which can def happen.

I suppose I had hoped Brown to extract a bit more value from the portal too, esp for LB, DB, DL, or OL positions or a really great WR, possibly a QB if Greene doesnt appear to be the guy next year, which I sincerely hope he will be. Id much rather Greene play early then later on, itll only increase his upside. I think Greene has the ability to be one of the greats at WVU, if the appropriate pieces are put around him, so Id much rather him start next year over Doege, it takes QBs usually 1 yr to find their rhythm, so id rather it be early on, sacrifice a little now for a better team down the line type of thing..

One thing is clear, players are leaving for a reason. Brown is recruiting at higher levels, so I suppose this is a positive sign our overall talent levels are improving.

Him nor his HS teammate Trey Lowe panned out. Go back and look at the past five classes prior to last year's class. Surprised we have done as well as we have. Lots of duds in those classes. You guys want to win the Big 12. It's not going to happen with the talent we are currently getting. Going to be mostly 6-6 and 7-5 type seasons until recruiting gets much better. In the old BE would have been 8-4 and 9-3. Still would lose to Miami and VT regularly. Maybe SU would not have fallen off and that would have been back and forth. Also, good for a OOC loss most years.

Sinkfield was less than desirable this year. He probably would have been special teams only for the rest of his eligibility. With 2 top level RB coming in and top RS players it's likely Sinkfield doesn't see PT. Mays more than likely gets beat out. Jennings. What exactly did he do last year that we miss.

Sinkfield had no vision. Terrible.

The DL in this current class are small. That spells trouble in another year or two. Also, no impact LBers. You are going 6-6 or 7-5 with this kind of talent.

With the way teams run the ball now

That 335 pound NT isn't as important. What is are DL that can shed blocks and cause disruption.
Teams are moving away from just clogging the middle.
I guess it is because they can score on the other end and remove some of the running game with their offense.

If there is any coach on the staff to trust it would be Jordan Lesley.

You need size to beat teams like Oklahoma. Look at how big Bama is on the lines. They have good skill but their lines are huge and brutal. You are not playing for anything significant without four or five All American starters and some quality depth behind them.

OU runs way too much outside zone

Those 340 pound NT get caught up too much against the outside zone.

I don't see the issue with recruiting 240-265 pound guys who will put on size.
Have to trust what Lesley is doing

OL attacks space now as well. All elites offenses take advantage of space in their run and pass games.

Need DL that can attack space. Research outside zone run plays and the importance of the DL getting to that space before the OL

Generally agree with what you say. What we seem to be seeing is that we have several players (many on the OL) who have not made great strides over their time in Morgantown and see that they will not be considered top level players in this program/Conference. They are bailing because of the apparent 'handwriting on the wall'. Probably better for the program to free up scholarship holes for future use. As for Greene or other QBs we have coming it is far too early to pass judgement. This is, most likely, NOT the cycle to be looking for a potential QB fill-in without the knowledge of what we have. Maybe next year!
We immediately need reliable depth at LB, and it is still too early in the portal process to render any decisions in that arena. Remember when Fields joined the team last year.
Much of the complain regarding WRs lies with their drops. Receiving talent seems to be there--Concentration on catching has been missing. Maybe maturity aids here. We are adding one quite good looking kid. We have NOT lost a bunch at this position. mAybe fine a seasoned Portal candidate if possible. As I see it, we do not just grab someone who has played a year or two unless his stats are better than just good or decent.
NB has brought in a large number of OL prospects. Some are bailing---GOOD BYE! We have several others who are in the same eligibility boat and the search for better prospects continues (rather successfully, as I see it).

On offense or defense

You know the interesting thing about the OU defense
They lacked one player over 305 pounds.

Helps when you have a dynamic offense but they want speed on the DL.

I questioned it but I think it works.
You can run at it. Remember Jimmy Johnson's Miami teams. He used that same concept but Notre Dame and FSU would run at it and beat them from time to time. Look at what Tenn did to his first great team in the Sugar bowl. I have the DVD. They ran at it and won 35-7.

There is 7-5 talent on the roster especially with Brown's vanilla schemes. I don't think he is going to do as good as Dana. Brown is not the person the media makes him out to be and I'll leave it at that.

All these football players running for the doors and the same jokers who bashed the previous coach anytime a player left are ignoring the present one and bashing the players who are leaving.

Pitiful. Looks like WVU football will remain in the dregs. Too bad 10,8 and 7 win seasons was too good for some— they prefer .500 or less and manufactured 6 win seasons.

Wonder how many more years WVU fans will have to wait for this to end?

I think he will be gone before 2024. I also do not think WVU is committed to being a big time player.

For the most part Brown will beat the teams he should.

There is an anomaly here and that is Tx Tech

The question becomes about talent and development. We will see. Looked like last year you saw an improvement in both.

These "vanilla" schemes are to allow talent to win.

If the program is developing the talent they can eventually take a huge step up.

Problem is that WVU is getting their asses kicked up front against the top of the Big 12.
Reason why he is 0-7 against OU, Texas, Iowa State and Oklahoma State

They do not have the talent to be vanilla. They need to be more innovative. Roll the pocket from time to time. Run some misdirection.

Three that are biggest losses to me are A Kendall @ QB, Q Mays @NG & B Mays as back up C/OT. Others I had hopes for were T Mayo, T Turner as young DBs that would develop into contributors. Their loss hurts secondary depth and Special Teams.

But your point is well taken, these guys are evaluating the roster and their own ability to make the 2 deep. And they are deciding they are better off on some other team. Some could be other issues like grades or homesick, but the decision is one of opting to quit. To the degree we can find replacements like Nestors/Hubbards/Mahones/Young’s/etc our team grows stronger.

When you see useless trolls attacking players and attacking anyone who tries to discuss the actual problem of players bailing on this coach that these morons claimed would come in and do better than the previous staff, cause the previous staff they said, was just sooooooo horrible and awful and worthless blah blah blah, you really understand that WVU football is essentially dead.

These jackasses are running the show and selling that .500 seasons are better than 10 win seasons and a coach that obviously can't coach at this level at all, is better than a staff that won the second most games of anyone ever at WVU , but against the toughest schedules ever played.

The players walking out the door all contributed to WVU's depth at the position they were at. They are leaving because they see that their opportunity to win games at WVU are not good enough for them to spend anymore time here trying. That should be an alarm bell, instead the idiots that brought it on are telling us the players leaving are to blame.

Are not most of the guys leaving 3rd year players or more? Or they have been beaten out of a starting position by someone the new staff brought in? (That is a question or set of questions by the way so answers are appreciated) Obviously they are not going to start here with the new talent being brought in and replacing the old staff's recruits. The new offensive line looks really good on paper. The new RBs are probably going to play a lot sooner than sinkfield. Austin got beat out and although he looked good in the bowl game, he really did not play well in his season as a starter. And the person named at the topic has gotten beat out more times than not on the line, so yes he is going somewhere to play.

If they had to sit out a year before they could play again, I doubt few of them would transfer. They would wait for that injury or would work harder. They no longer have to because they can go somewhere right now and be eligible. it helps us some (see fields) and it will hurt us some. That is college sports now. One step away from being a semi pro league or a minor league for the NFL.

Having more talent will hurt us in the short, but hopefully help in the long run. We shall see.

This conversation is useless because you much rather push a narrative.
Sound a lot like Bucky.

Neal Brown's job is to compete at the top of the Big 12.
For this to happen they need to develop the talent on the roster. From Year 1 to Year 2 you see development.
But it still isn't enough.

1) Offensive Line isn't good enough
2) Average QB play
3) Lack of depth at RB

1 and 3 are being taken care of it looks like. #2 is still the question.
Need NFL Draft Quality QB play to win in the Big 12.

So we wait and see what happens with Greene. Obviously Doege will never be good enough no matter what happens on the OLine and at Running Back

The other question becomes reloading on defense.
Can they replace the players that left and continue to play Defense at a high level.

But to say Neal Brown won't ever win is ********.
Pushing narratives

From what one can tell from the outside, it does look like most guys have lost their spot. Frazier, Nestor, Gmiter are all pretty young guys that claimed spots. Add Moorer, Yates, Mayo, Milum, White, Rimac,Hubbard, Stewart have all got good recruit ratings. I can see why some are moving on.

This staff needs to find out what went wrong with recruiting. Freaking Memphis did better than WVU.

Memphis done very well in the transfer portal, remarkably well actually, but some of these players may be transferring closer to home, being Memphis is traditionally a recruiting hotspot, which is why Memphis HC's do well there. Its difficult to measure the actual quality of a Memphis HC for that reason.

Regarding to: "They do not have the talent to be vanilla"

I would argue they are running what they can BECAUSE of the lack of talent, left by the previous staff, and that is why they are restricted from a scheme perspective. In essence, they are vanilla because of talent.. Brown inherited one of the worst OL's in ALL of D1, it was one of his first comments actually about the team. While a few of the players leaving would add to our depth, they are getting beat out by younger more talented players, which speaks to Brown's efforts to improve the overall talent level.

We just have to be patient to give that "talent" time to mature & develop. Between our horrendous OL and extremely restricted QB play, theres only so many things you can do from a scheme perspective.

Brown has improved the OL in a short time, but they are still young... Garrett Greene has the skillset to not be nearly as confined conceptually, but hes also just a RedShirt Fresh, but id rather him play early and increase his upside.

I was hoping Brown would extract a bit more value from the portal, but hes not finished adding pieces yet so we'll see.. This may be a blessing, by giving Brown more flexibility to bring transfers, juco, & more HS recruits in the 22 class too.. One thing is clear, Brown is recruiting at a higher level then DH, we just have to be patient and give that talent time to develop, which takes a couple years.

Memphis recruits the scraps

But often times states like Texas, Louisiana and Georgia have great scraps left

For the record Memphis didn't out recruit WVU according to the composite.
They finished 48th in the country. WVU finished 40th.

They did bring in a LB I think WVU should have looked at. But I don't think the staff really hits Louisiana hard
But Andrew Jones from Marrero should end up being an elite player in the AAC
