Max verifies your Maiden numbers exactly. Nothing posted on Hibriten's stats, but I'm sure you're very close. What an absolutely dead even game. Just looking at the score by quarters would tell you that.
I was worried at halftime because, by my count, Hibriten had been penalized eight times, mostly five yard procedure penalties, and Maiden had been penalized only twice. That hasn't been how its gone for us this season, and I knew it wouldn't last. It didn't. In the second half, yellow rained down on Maiden, mostly holding penalties, plus a face-mask and an unnecessary roughness penalty mixed in. Par for the course.
Then, with Maiden leading 29-28, Hibriten was looking at fourth and about 12 from deep inside its own territory. I couldn't believe the throw and catch they pulled off on that play. A ball thrown deep, right on the sideline, to a receiver covered by two Maiden defenders, and he comes down with the ball. The catch probability on that throw had to be less than 10%. Maiden played a really tough schedule this season and faced a lot of good QBs. Lincolnton had a really good QB, as did Hickory, East Lincoln, Newton-Conover, and certainly the Bandys QB. But, IMO, the Hibriten QB was the best QB we faced all season. He was a good runner as well as passer.
Not many teams could survive that much penalty yardage against a team like Hibriten. It took a missed chip shot FG attempt in order to make that happen. Fortunately, we have another opportunity to clean up the penalties. We'll need to, because we're probably the underdogs against Brevard. But if Maiden can avoid beating Maiden, we'll have a decent shot at winning.
