Westfield used big special teams plays, a great overall game from Malachi Lee that included a fumble return for a TD, plus overcame a lot of difficulty in their kicking game to defeat Fairfax 31-15.
FFX opened the game on their own eight yard line and gained a first down before punting from their own 31 yard line. WF started their first possession on their own 37 yard line and used a 31 yard Carlson to Lee pass to get into FFX territory before Carlson was intercepted by FFX's Payne who returned to ball all the way to the WF 12 yard line. FFX then scored in a 7 yard Farmer run to go out in front 7-0 (Maltese XP) with 7:12 to go in the first quarter. On the FFX KO WF's Lee had a 45 yard KOR to the FFX 42 but WF failed to move the ball and punted. FFX took over on their 28 yard line but FFX's Ceasar fumbled and WF's Kiley recovered on the FFX 39 yard line. On the first play from scrimmage WF's Sutherland ran 39 yards up the middle and scored to draw WF within 7-6 (Batchala XP missed) with 5:43 remaining in the first quarter. FFX went three and out on their next possession with WF's Lee getting another great kick return of 40 yards to the FFX 20 yard line. WF's offense stalled and they elected to try a Batchala FG that missed from 37 yards out. FFX then went three and out again, but this time the punt was blocked by WF's Cardenas with WF's Webster recovering on the FFX 11 yard line. WF's offense stalled again and Batchala missed another FG, this one from 26 yards. FFX then took the KO on their 20 yard line but a run for a one yard loss, a holding penalty, a run for no gain, and a QB sack left them on their own three yard line. The FFX punt from the end zone was blocked by WF's Flamer and went out of the end zone for a safety to make the score 8-7 WF with 9:06 remaining in the half. Lee then added to his return yardage total with a 19 yard KO return to the FFX 45 yard line. Several plays later Lee scored on a 30 yard pass from Carlson across the middle and WF lead 15-7 (Batchala XP) with 6:15 to play in the half. FFX punted on their next possession and WF took over near midfield with time running down. WF used a 23 yard Carlson to Lee pass to get to the FFX five yard line with 13 seconds remaining, then scored on a 5 yard Carlson to Lee pass to extend the lead to 22-7 (Batchala XP) with four seconds left before the teams headed to the locker room.
