Re: Westfield 31 Robinson 14 Writeup
Westfield started the game on their 36 and quickly moved down field using a mix of passes and runs, with Scoville scoring on a 1 yard QB keeper to put WF up 7-0 just over 4 minutes into the game. Robinson took the ball 80 yards on their first possession, capped by a 39 yard run from Denham to even the score at 7-7. WF took only 2 plays to counter, a 12 yard Scoville run followed by a 53 yard run from Gray and it was 14-7 with 5 minutes left in the 1st quarter. It looked like the game would become a shootout, but it wasn't to be. After some difficulty stopping the Robinson running game on the first drive, WF adjusted and began to dominate on defense, forcing punts on the next two Robinson possessions sandwiched around a failed 4th down attempt for WF at the Robinson 39 yard line. After forcing the second of the two Robinson punts, Scoville hooked up with Scanlon for a 46 yard pass to the Robinson 3. After two runs for no gain and a sack, WF settled for a 28 yard Bouveron FG and was up 17-7 with 5 mins to go in the half. Robinson started their next drive on their own 20 yard line and moved to midfield, but a chop block call put them in a deep hole and they had to punt, with WF taking over on their own 33. WF wasted little time putting together a good drive highlighted by Scoville hitting Scanlon for 25 yard and 35 yard passes on the drive to get to the Robinson 1 yard line, where Scoville took it in again and the score was 24-7 with seconds to go in the half.
The second half saw Robinson again start from their own 20, as WF kicker Delaney put all but one kick off into, our out of, the end zone. Unable to gain much yardage on the drive, Robinson punted. It was a towering punt that WF's Barron fumbled and Robinson recovered on the WF 26. Successfully completing two fourths downs on the 26 yard drive, Robinson's Lee scored from 7 yards out to pull within 24-14 with 5:45 to go in the 3rd quarter. WF was three and out on their next possession and punted to midfield where Robinson took over. Driving to the WF 22, Robinson tried a trick passing play that was intercepted by WF's Gibson on the WF 8, killing the drive. WF then put together a nice drive behind the running of Bethea and Scoville's passing, converting a 4th and inches at the Robinson 10 yard line, then scoring on a 5 yard Scoville to Brown pass to push the score to 31-14, WF, with 6 minutes left. The final minutes saw some turnovers, as Gibson intercepted another Robinson pass on the next drive and returned the ball to the Robinson 31 yard line, but several plays later WF fumbled, but then Robinson fumbled the ball back on the next play. Neither team did much from that point on and the clock ran out.
