The Westfield defense was very, very good tonight, keeping Patriot out of the red zone until the 4th quarter and limiting Patriot's opportunities. With the run game struggling somewhat, Westfield went mostly to the passing game and it paid dividends. WF's Morin, who played a great game last week against Battlefield, was excellent again tonight.
Patriot received the ball first and went three and out. WF started their first drive on their own 48 yard line and on the third play Kim hit Morin on a 33 yard scoring strike and WF was off to a great start, 7-0 (Hildrup XP) less than 2 minutes into the game. Patriot started their next possession on their own 31 yard line but WF's Morin intercepted Patriot's Sonnenberg at the WF 41 yard line on the first play of the drive. After reaching the Patriot 18 yard line, WF stalled and failed to convert a 4th and 8 when Kim slightly overthrew Morin. Patriot's next possession was another short drive and punt, and this time WF started on their own 14 yard line. Failing to move the ball, WF punted back to Patriot where Patriot started their drive on the WF 47 yard line. Patriot was able to reach the WF 31 yard line where they faced a 4th and 10. Electing to go for it, Sonnenberg was sacked and WF took over on the Patriot 35. This time WF put together a 65 yard drive, helped by a 10 yard Kim run out of punt formation at the Patriot 43 yard line, capping the drive when Kim had to scramble to his right before seeing an open Goodman along the home sideline and completing a 35 yard TD pass to put WF ahead 14-0 (Hildrup XP) with 10:11 to play in the second quarter. Patriot started their next drive on their 24 yard line and reached the WF 45 yard line, completing a 4th and 1 along the way, before they were forced to punt. WF took over on their 35 yard line but went three and out before Patriot failed on another 4th down try near midfield with seconds left in the half. The half ended 14-0, WF.
The second half started with four quick drives and then punts, two by each team, before WF got a 52 yard drive capped by an 18 yard Kim run to extend the lead to 21-0 (Hildrup XP) with 3:14 remaining in the third quarter. Patriot started their drive on their own 44 yard line after a short kickoff, but only reached the WF 49 yard line where a 4th and 3 attempt failed after a 1 yard run (end of the third quarter). WF, starting at their own 48, marched to the Patriot 2 yard line where they faced a 4th and goal. Electing to got for it, Kim scored on a scramble to extend WF's lead to 28-0 (Hildrup XP) with 11:51 remaining in the game. Patriot's next drive was their only successful drive of the night, going 57 yards and scoring when Sonnenberg hit Onwuka with a 14 yard pass to cut the lead to 28-6 (Morin blocked the XP) with 10:00 left in the game. Patriot then tried to execute an onside kick, with WF recovering on the WF 47 yard line, but WF went three and out to give the ball back to Patriot on the Patriot 20 yard line. Patriot drove to the WF 40, where WF's Morin stepped in front of a Patriot receiver and took the INT 62 yards for a pick six. WF now led, 35-6 (Hildrup XP) with 4:25 to play. Patriot was intercepted by WF's McClain on their next possession and the game was soon over after that.
