Westfield's first possession ended with a punt that was blocked after a high snap, giving Oakton the ball on the WF 34 yard line. The Oakton offense failed to move the ball and attempted a 44 yard FG that was well short. Both these events foreshadowed the rest of the first half-offenses that did not play well, and missed opportunities. WF got the ball and drove to the Oakton 44, where they faced 4th and 2 but failed to convert, giving Oakton good field position again. Oakton proceeded to go three and out. With the ball again and pinned deep at their own 9 yard line, WF reached close to midfield but punted again; another high snap resulted in a short punt to the Oakton 43, but Oakton again went three and out. WF got the ball on their own 30 yard line, but failed to move the ball again and punted from midfield putting Oakton on the 21 where they went 3 and out again. On WF's next possession starting at their own 24, they connected on a 53 yard Scanlon to Eckert pass to move to the Oakton 23. Two plays later WF lined up to attempt a 35 yard FG but Oakton jumped offsides, giving WF a new set of downs. WF made them pay for the mistake, getting a 15 yard Scanlon to James pass for the game's first score with just 49 seconds left in the half. 7-0 WF. Overall, the first half was not much in the way of offense for either team.

The second half would be much of the same for Oakton, but WF adjusted and the offense started moving the ball. WF opened the second half on their own 40 and behind a 20 yard Monticue run moved as deep as the Oakton 25, where they settled for 44 yard Delaney FG at 9:54 to go up 10-0. Oakton went 3 and out, then WF was stopped short on a 4th and 3 attempt from the Oakton 24. Oakton punted again, then WF had to return the favor after being pinned deep due to an untimely holding penalty, but Delaney got off a 50 yard punt and pushed Oakton back to their own 26 yard line. On this possession, after again failing to get a first down, Oakton attempted a fake punt but was stopped short and gave the ball back to WF on the Oakton 32. Scanlon hooked up with Eckert on a 32 yard pass on the next play and WF went up 17-0 with 2:25 left in the 3rd quarter. On Oakton's next possession they fumbled the ball near their own 48 and it was recovered by WF's Kanu who advanced the ball to the Oakton 15. A few plays later Scanlon got his 3rd passing TD, this time to James for 13 yards, putting WF up 24-0 just prior to the end of the 3rd quarter.

At the beginning of the 4th quarter, after another Oakton punt, Scanlon hit Eckert again for a 48 yard catch and run down the sideline and WF led 31-0 at the 11:17 mark. Oakton finally got on the board a few minutes later when Daido caught a 40 yard pass to the WF 7 yard line and then Bacon caught an 8 yard TD pass to make the score 31-7. Oakton then tried an onside kick that went out of bounds at the WF 48, and WF went the 52 yards quickly with Scanlon getting his 5th TD pass of the game when he connected with James, who made a very nice sidestep move to shake the defender, scoring from 15 yards out. The game ended with this score, 38-7.

Are the Westfield players back from suspension?

One came back last week; one is no longer with the team. Of the four who regain eligibility next week one may have an injury that will keep him out for a while. The other three (receivers) will be available next week for Briar Woods. But that does pose a sort of dilemma-the two main receivers used this far, James and Eckert, have played very well and really stepped up. Now they have their (arguably) top 3 (based on early season performance) receivers back-who sits? On the other hand, I think WF now has seven very capable receiving targets (I am including Cockrill and Clancy in there now) any of whom would get a good look at starting as receivers or tight ends on almost any other team but some will have to sit or share reps. Not a bad problem to face.

That was Aiello (switched from #54 to #2) that had the fumble recovery/return.

Nice write-up though. I agree - #88 and #82 have significantly improved their performance over the last 4 weeks. Tough decisions to be made - or play them all since the running game is still struggling.

He is the player who is no longer with the team. I was sorry to see that he will not play, as his ability at running back would have been an asset.

Thanks for the correction and I apologize to him for getting his name wrong. I try to recognize the kids for their hard work. I can only go by the rosters I find.....
