Westfield put up 20 points in the first half on a 6 yard Scoville to Pearson pass, a 15 yard Scoville to Scanlon pass, and a 50 yard Scoville to Barron pass. Langley managed to amass about 150 yards of offense, mostly behind the running of West and Anderson, but every possession ended with a punt or turning the ball over on downs when the Westfield defense finally held. Despite the yardage Langley gained, Westfield was really in control of the game on both sides of the ball.

The second half saw Westfield run one offensive play and get a 65 yard Gray TD run, WF 27-0. After Langley was pinned deep in their own half of the field on the next possession and lost 7 yards on 3 plays, they punted from their own 5 yard line. The short punt was fielded by Barron at the Langley 36 and he raced down the right sideline for a TD, WF 33-0 at the 9:25 minute mark of the 3rd quarter and the game was effectively over. At this point WF started substituting. Langley chose to keep the starters in for the remainder of the game and in the 4th quarter managed to put together two 80 yards drives with West doing most of the damage (the scores came on a 3 yard West run and a 13 yard Anderson run), sandwiched around a 23 yard pick 6 for Langley's #22 (White?). WF added an 8 yard Bethea run in the 4th quarter for the final score of 47-20.

Langley ends their season at 6-5. Westfield will face Chantilly, a 49-35 winner over Hayfield, next week

Yeah, Westfield JV was in for all 3 Langley TD's. If memory serves wasn't Bethea's TD run more like 48 yards? Westfield D had a nice run of 12 scoreless quarters.

Great to see Westfield supporters talking about their opponent keeping their starters in against their "JV" when they have done the same thing all year. Enjoy your cake walk to the 6A State Semis, just know that Centreville will be waiting with AJ Turner this time. Westfield loses their fourth straight State Semi / Northern Region Championship in 4 years.

UJoking, like I said earlier in the year, you really have an ax to grind. Prove what you say-I don't think you can, and I have seen every WF game for years. Remember that virtually every team keeps the starters in with large leads until at least the early parts of the second half. And when games turn into high scoring shootouts, longer. In high school football even a 3-4 TD lead can be overcome quickly, as the drop off to the subs can be dramatic. Centreville does the same thing-the starters need their reps to make the team develop to be the best they can be. By your logic, almost every Centreville game for the last two years should have seen the starters out somewhere well before the half. That probably didn't happen, did it? Anyone with some sense understands that is not happening if the coach wants to make his team better. Yes, the last two regular season WF games have been blowouts, but the scores were reasonable at the half. Against Chantilly, most of the WF starters were out mid-3rd quarter when the score reached the 30's (it was 25-0 at the half). Against Oakton, they were out after the first or second series in the second half. Nothing unusual there, for any team I have seen, Centreville included.

Try saying something positive about a rival once in a while. What I said was not a negative on Langley, it was simply a fact and it contributed to the final outcome appearing closer than it really was. People who read these posts want to know how a game really went and probably appreciate an accurate report, which mine are.

Now, think about all the other seniors who might have liked to get in a few plays in their last game. I am sure some did not get that chance, and the game was over early in the 3rd quarter. Heck, the Langley coaches were even discussing "one last play" to try to get their starters another score or chance with just seconds left in the game. That is their decision and I understand it. The coaches do what they feel is the best for their team and program and we can question it all we like, but we are not in charge.

And, yes, the two teams will probably get their chance to play each other again. They are the two best teams this year. As for the earlier game, injuries (Tutt) certainly affected Centreville in that game but you cannot deny the game was extremely well played by both teams. Maybe Centreville was a bit off that game; I haven't seen every Centreville game so I don't know. Maybe Westfield took advantage of tendencies they saw on film. Sometimes the ball bounces one way and sometimes another. Haddock took a chance in OT based on what he knew about his team and what he thought was best by going for two, and it just did not work out. It happens to all teams.

I just thought it was a little bit unusual for Langley to make such efforts to pad West's stat line. To even call time-out on a "running clock" inside of 1 minute in hopes of getting the ball back. Which they did. And ran West yet again. Whatever. Coaches make the decisions on both sidelines. Didn't expect to get attacked for noticing.

Guess I should never speak of Westfield again lest I offend the Centreville fans.
