MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (June 29, 2023) – For the seventh time, West Virginia second baseman JJ Wetherholt has been named a first-team All-American with the latest coming from D1Baseball. Wetherholt becomes the first Mountaineer to be a unanimous first-team All-American and joins Alek Manoah as the only WVU players to be All-Americans by all seven publications. Manoah made five first-teams and two second-teams in 2019. The Mars, Pennsylvania native is one of eight players in the country to earn unanimous status along with Dylan Crews and Paul Skenes of LSU, Rhett Lowder of Wake Foreset, Kyle Teel of Virginia, Andrew Walters of Miami, Caden Grice of Clemson, and Matt Shaw of Maryland. Out of those eight, Wetherholt is the only player that is not draft-eligible this year and set to return to college. Wetherholt led the NCAA with a .449 batting average this season, becoming the first Big 12 player since Ken Harvey of Nebraska in 1999 to lead the country, while also contributing with 16 home runs, 24 doubles, two triples, 60 RBI, 67 runs scored, and 36 stolen bases. He is one of just two players this season to have at least 15 home runs and 35 stolen bases and is also the first Division I player since 2002 to have 35 stolen bases and 40 extra-base hits. The rising junior is the second Mountaineer to be named an All-American by D1Baseball, joining Manoah in 2019. He is the 25th player in team history to be named an All-American, and the Baseball America accolade is the 63rd overall All-America honor in program history. He now has seven of WVU's 16 total first-team awards. Out of West Virginia's 63 total All-America accolades, 32 have come since 2015 and 34 have been since coach Randy Mazey arrived in Morgantown in 2013.
