Message: <blockquote data-quote="The Bell Tolls for Thee" data-source="post: 131950370" data-attributes="member: 1812660">That is a reductive and emotional argument.  Governmental policies based upon emotional appeals is a garbage way to manage a populace.1st, the number of COVID deaths is inflated.  Example would be a heart failure patient with very poor cardiac function.  3 years ago if that person got the flu and then developed decompensated heart failure that led to death, heart failure would be listed as the cause of death.  Another case could be an elderly patient gets admitted to the hospital for dehydration and intractable vomiting/diarrhea from influenza.  During hospitalization the patient develops sepsis from a urinary tract infection and dies.  Urosepsis would be listed as the cause of death in that case.  Replace influenza with COVID 19 and these patients are listed as COVID deaths instead.  Now I'm not saying COVID wasn't a contributor or even the main driver.  I'm just pointing out that COVID is the only disease that gets treated as the primary cause of death almost automatically by simply being present.2nd, the reportrd number of COVID deaths in WV is 5,576, not 6000.  Across 396000+ cases, that is a 1.3% death rate.  (Numbers from CDC) That percentage is also inflated by selection bias in that the significantly ill will always seek out medical care resulting in testing while the minimally ill or asymptomatic do not always seek testing.  Therefore the pool of COVID infections that are being tested skew heavily in favor of those who are likely to be significantly ill and die. From 2020 until now there have been over 2800 overdose deaths (numbers from WV dept of health and human services).  Approximately 550 motor vehicle deaths.  Approximately 200 murders (CDC).  Leading up to the pandemic WV was averaging over 3400 cardiac deaths per year, 3300 cancer deaths, over 1100 chronic lung disease deaths, 750 stroke deaths, and over 600 diabetes deaths (Numbers from the national institute of health).  Interesting that I couldn't find the numbers for those latter diseases or suicides during the pandemic years on either the CDC or NIH, but I digress.  So while COVID is not nothing, in the grand scheme of things it is also not an albatross worthy of giving governments and institutions consent to compel new uniform behavior of the citizenery for daily activities.3rd, this is all about wearing cloth or surgical masks at an indoor sporting event.  You are as likely to catch COVID, particularly the current variant, from spending hours in a crowded indoor space masked as you are unmasked unless it is a K95 you wear practically the entire time. If you really cared about those "6000" like you say, you'd be objecting to the University having fans at the game at all.  Instead you just cynically use their deaths as a convenient cudgel for petty authoritarian policies.  For the last time the healthy, non-elderly (obesity puts you out of the healthy category) population is at risk from COVID at practically the same rate as any other winter virus season regardless of being vaccinated or not.  The vulnerable can get vaccinated, wear K95's and/or just not go to a non-essential entertainment event if they want to protect themselves.  Expecting everyone to perpetually do something society has never done for the illusion of protection is asinine.</blockquote>
