I don't know - I took it as a guy that 1. was probably prompted he'd be asked about it before that plane landed in Italy 2. Made the most non-newsworthy response as possible while making sure he didn't get caught in a lie

I may be wrong, but talking to friends in Indy, these guys, Certified Fraud & Forensic Investigations, have some excellent technical resources.
They provide digital forensics, data imaging, and cell phone forensics. Thus they can pull data that may have been deleted but still remain in the root files. Think Clinton's emails.
Now if they pulled this data, it is not going to be in the same format as you see on your phone's screen in the text app.
The message could be there but it also would be surrounded by tons of code. Just like looking at one of your posts on here in html editor.
Thus, if this is the data they pulled, and this technology is used everyday, then they probably recreated it in a format the reader would recognize.
Why would he not come out and deny it if it wasn't true? I don't think UL is holding anyone back from denying this ever happened.
they had a forensic team recreate the text. cady said himself he was dubious when she said she had lost some of the text due to a virus but the forensic nerds were able to retrieve and recreate the lost messages. think of it like this. when zipp hears the cops at the door he is gonna start deleting the child porn on his computer. that doesn't mean that it's gone. they can go in there and retrieve the data and still arrest said pervert after he wiped his computer.
also, had a ul fan come up to me at work today and say "hey man, i looked into that ul thing you were telling me about and all they got is a photo of the girl with one of our players" i said "no, they have more than that. they have a pulitzer award winning investigative reporter who worked on the book and he took down police corruption in indianapolis and he's got text, journal entries that match up with when recruits were on campus, multiple pictures, wire transfers, and probably more they are holding for a FU in case ul tries to strong arm them"
