What did we learn week 1?!?!?

Back by popular demand - or at least back for another year. Lots to see from week 1. So here we go for 2016!

1. That uneasy the head that wears the 2015 crown for some.

2. That GBW is still, well, GBW.

3. That the MSL West is back - well at least for Palatine Hiffman and Barrington.

4. That week one shootouts are great for fans dreadful for reports - see Peoria 70-63 win.

5. That a stack of D1 offers don't mean squat if you don't match your own hype.

6. That East St Louis, wow.

7. That the "it's not over til it's over" week 1 award goes to Lake Zurich.

8. That Maine South is back to Maine Southing people.

9. That the Bartlett freshmen have officially been replaced by the Warren freshmen.

10. That the thrill you get accompanied by the lump in the throat you feel when your son plays his first HS football game is memorable to say the least.

Hey that's my thoughts. Join in.

11. That week 1 raises questions that will be answered in the coming weeks about teams, like:

Is MS that good (see week 2 against Loyola)?
Is ESL that good?
Can Montini bounce back?
What's up on the Emerald Isle?
Did H-F just reload?
Is Fenwick the real deal?

Now we are officially back in full swing. Congrats Newt.

If Soucie classification holds it looks like a two horse race in 7A but GBN looks to be the big bubble school that could fall into 7A giving that field more depth.

Keep an eye on WSS this year. Big wins by HC, OPRF and LT along with GW point to a highly competitive conference this year.

Week 2 now has the big match up we were hoping to find now that MS is balling.

Big thing we learned this week was that Bones is a stand up guy of the highest order and the rest of the BoD has poor planning skills

St.Laurence has some fine tuning but they hit the ground running.Is the Reavis Coach that good?

It cost 22 dollar to park at Soldier Field for a high school game.

I took a gamble on St. Rita and lost.

East St Louis love it's Flyers football and has a community and fan base that would outdraw several home teams in and around Chicagoland. Was blown away by the visitors attendance on Sat night.

That even when I pick them to finish last in the CCL Blue...Provi fans still treat me well regardless.

That Glenbard West drew more students on a Friday night on the road than in anytime I can remember on a Saturday at Duchon Field.

Just an observation, not a judgement: A deeply religious prayer or benediction before a game between a public and parochial school, even when hosted by the latter, is somewhat surprising to hear in this day and age.

I don't think this is uncommon. JCA always has a prayer over the PA at home football, basketball and volleyball games regardless of the opponent, public or private. I would think most Catholic schools do the same.

CoM has a decent chance to start the season 2-0. With the recent absolutely brutal non-conf schedule, this has to be a lift for them.

Yes I think they do accept in the playoffs for some reason!

Has always been done at JCA games when Morris played there....no problems except for maybe 1 or 2 idiots...

This thread is so far off topic already. Come on people this is a what did we learn thread. you add 11. 12. 13. and so on. 1 statement thats all. You guys are still in preseason mode and Newt is Playoff ready.

What did we learn?

12. Newt is in hyper sensitive mode after week 1.

13. We won't truly know how good some of the alleged top 30 teams are for a couple more weeks.

Aurora Christian Starting QB went down on the second play of the game with fractured hip.

Back up QB went down in 2nd quarter with broken throwing hand.

There was no 3rd QB in depth chart.

Not many programs going to win in week 1 with same circumstances.

So let's use WWS as a better example as they dazzled in 7-on-7 placing top 10 at national tourney before succumbing to WN.

Edgy caught some flak for not including WWS in Top 30-50 preseason based on 7/7 perf. Now he looks kinda smart. Kinda...

Very valid point. as is the 7on7. 7on7 is not real football, its only 2-3 components out of 10 or 12+ of real football (pass routes & pass coverage) and touch at that.

the WN win is another indicator of the fallacy of predicting full season football based on 7on7. same with all the preseason polls or standings after 1 week.

The WN hinged in large part on 2 very long (like 75 yards and 80 yards) kick returns by a JR who had never returned kicks before. there are no kicks in 7on7....

same goes with the injuries already besetting some teams, there is just no way to account for those factors.

Varsity QB played almost entire 1st half, albeit very much hampered, with hip injury.
Freshman QB broke a finger (not his hand) on his non-throwing hand in the JV game (not in the varsity game).
Freshman QB played the entire 2nd half and finished the game. No 3rd QB (and they have options) was needed. Frosh QB went 4-9 passing, 122 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT.

My point is this - without quality line play, the 7-on-7 success and skill position talent out the wazoo doesn't matter. ACC controlled the clock and the trenches. AC defense could not get ACC offense off the field. That's where the game was won.

I keep saying that as well. 7v7 is nice and a couple of the key components but it doesn't necessarily translate to a fantastic season and dominance in the fall.

It does not tell you:
1. O-Line/RB: can they pass pro and run block/run the ball
2. Front 7: can they pass rush and stop run
3. QB: does he handle pressure well?
4 special teams - field position, big play returns

look at my following post. it is specific to 7on7 is NOT indicative at all of results in real football and gave that example as why it is not.

on a side note, and this is from someone who does not have any player past, present at Aurora Christian, thinking that Freshman playing as the 3rd option QB at a small school puts them in a good spot either in that game or for the remainder of the year is putting them in good position.....
