As Soucie so accurately called it, week 4 was a blood bath for unbeatens - per Soucie just 88 left in the state. May seem like a lot but not really.

Here we go for week 4.

1 - That Hersey is quietly 4-0 and looks to be a potential 7a beast
2 - That Class 8A is looking more and more. wide open every day.
3 - That my Brother with rice rambled on this week.
4 - That Cary proved it’s the beat the FVC has at least for this week.
5 - That the echoes of Murny Lazier and Pat Keefe are back at Evanston.
6 - That something is amiss at Lake Zurich and the Bears need to figure out what very soon.
7 - That the Och is rockin again except this time they got the instruments to make a run.
8 - That HF Maine South’d da Brook.
9 - That also, very quietly Waubonsie is taking down all comers at 4-0.
10 - That Hope gives hope and a gets a W over Iggy.

That’s all

Amiss in LZ? Time for some tough love. For starters, coaches and players seem to have no self-awareness of the situation, and you need that to improve. The coach said after the Naz game "we did not get blown off the field?" Coach-- make no mistake--you got blown off the field--own it and figure out how to get better. To the players (mostly new starters) strutting around like you are state champs, take that ridiculous dew rag off your head, get rid of that towel hanging from the back of your pants, stop throwing your helmet around and stop with the tantrums on the sidelines. It's embarrassing. Strap your chinstrap on, put your bigboy pants on, and start playing tough LZ football.

That great programs, like Loyola, don't always just "reload".

That IC is not unbeatable in 4A, even though they won.

That Bishop Mac is going to be awfully tough in 3A.
Can't bmac be 4a as well. I thought they were awfully close

What do you expect him to say in th media? Blast his players and then lose them Altogether.

To say Mertens and his staff aren’t aware is just a dumb statement.

They were overrrated at the start of the season. But to say these aren’t aware and they aren’t playing “LZ football,” is a Pom Pom Dad statement.

Sounds like Mertens is getting out coached.

Scared to lose his players? In a program as long-term successful and strongly supported by the community, that’s on his mind.

You’d think the kids would be “all in.”

McNamara's enrollment is 572.55...4A has been 571 or smaller 5 of the last 6 years; last 4 4A smallest have been 529, 548, 529, 549...Mac would have been 4A last year if they had made the playoffs...

I think eagles called it around week 1. I also heard from some co-workers that are close to the program and have had kids on the team recently and in years past that they were ranked way too high this year. They would know as they have seen many a good/great LZ team and also the ones that struggled and missed the playoffs a few years back. They told me this current team is somewhere above that team that missed the playoffs (in 2015?) but way below last years team and the other recent teams that made the finals.

The 3 L-W schools put up 57,57 and 46 (53.3-pt. average) against 3 conference opponents from 3 different HS districts.

Hersey is quietly 4-0 because they haven't beat any team of actual substance. I think they will go 7-2 and maybe get a first round win. Now, if they beat BG or Meadows I'll change my stance. But for now, nothing impressive .

I would not expect him in the preseason NBC sports interview (5th ranking) to be talking about the state title game and possibly returning there (with 8 defensive starters, etc) before the first snap of the season.

Not sure where you are going with the seemingly derogatory "pom pom" statement. By the way, it is called LZ varsity dance, they work and practice really hard, and they actually won the state title last year . . .

I definitely would love to see Bishop Mac make a strong run to the 4A title game. Also like Coal City's chances.

I would argue that statement is not true. And since I have seen Hersey twice in person, I have some perspective.

Hersey went on the road for their first 3 games and won all 3. They won at Zion, tough place to play and a very athletic team. They came from behind to beat Fremd, a team that has been in every game they have played and Hersey won at Vernon Hills, who was unbeaten at the time.

Then they come home and beat Maine West, who most likely will win the CSL North.

This from a team that expected to have 75 percent of its starters to be juniors.

Me? I am impressed.

Not sure how wide open 8A. Based on everything I've seen, I think 8A goes through Flossmoor at this point, though LW East will have something to say about it.

I think 7A is the most wide open at this point. Could name 8 teams now that I think could legit win the title. Don't think another class can say that.

How many of those teams do you expect to make noise in the playoffs? For me it's none. Zion is 1-3. Tough place to play? Cool. Fremd? Also 1-3 and arguably choked the game away against Hersey .I would argue Fremd lost that game more than Hersey won it. Vernon Hills? Unbeaten against who? Nobody impressive. And Maine West...come in now. Am I impressed that they are young? Absolutely. But this year they are no more than an easy 2nd round out .

I'll hang up and listen .

You want to knock they way they played thus far? Sure, go ahead if it makes you feel better.

They were conference champs a year ago and went out in the second round.

This team was not supposed to make any noise. Most people (myself included), figured they would be 1-3 at this point in the season. Here they are 4-0 and you are ripping them because of what you feel is a "soft" schedule. The reality is that many teams up North this year are soft. But you still have to play and you still have to win and that is what Hersey is doing.

I never said state champs and neither did Newt. But give credit where credit is due.

And BTW, Maine West is a pretty good team as well. You need to get out more.

They will have East in 2 weeks will see how good HF is. Amazes me how soon we forget East has pretty much owned HF and is defending 8A champions, but hey it’s more motivation for they boys in blue!

Totally agree - I would flip flop KIng MJ’s statement and say - 8A runs through LWE but HF might have something to say about it.

Very frustrating (but impressive) to have TWO legit 8A state title contenders with high chance of reaching and winning the title game in one Conference. Don’t think even the Blue has had that (for 8A) since it’s a mix of 6A to 8A teams.

I learned that I may hold the record with the fastest thread flush of all time.

Nope! Mine asking a question on the “LZ talk” thread flush! Was up maybe 30 minutes is my guess? How about yours - estimate of number of minutes up before the flush?;)

Great point Vodoo, SWSC might be best conference pound for pound.
As good as the top 2 teams might be (LWE, H-F), the bottom 3 teams are bad (will leave them un-named). Spots 3-5 in the league ('Brook, LWC, LWW) collectively are not as strong as last year's versions IMO. Of the remaining 5 teams toward the middle-of-the-pack, maybe 1 or 2 might squeeze out a playoff-qualifying 6-3 or 5-4 record.

I think the thread asking about the “dumpster fire” the day dumpster fire got flushed lasted about 2 minutes.

Yeah that’s right! My recap of the dumpster fire thread got flushed damn quick as well (thank goodness I didn’t go down with the thread!;)). I might be neck and neck with Jcrewx for fastest thread flush champion!!

I feel very bad for them. They are a better team than that.

Aren’t they down to their QB4? I know a couple QBs left the game vs WV and one turned out to be a bad injury and probably out all year with broken leg?

The QB2 is playing. The QB1 a Soph broke his leg and is out for the year. I've been told he is the real deal. Heard they lost a couple of OL for the season. Not good.

Yeah he looked good before the injury. I thought the QB2 did pretty well also - considering the situation. Glad he is back at least. I don’t remember much about QB3 - but can’t imagine he had any reps at QB at practice (probably plays another position and was emergency QB for the game). Tough sledding. They have played a very very difficult schedule to date.
