Hard to believe that we wait so long for the season to start and next week it will be past the regular season halfway point.

Here goes it.

1 - That the beast in East is still the beast whether it’s East North or East South.
2 - That Notre Dame is a thing and Hennessy is more than just an after dinner drink.
3 - That I was dead wrong about the FVC. Huntley, your table is ready.
4 - That we don’t really know how good South Elgin is, but it looks like we are about to find out.
5 - That if you talk smack you best be able to back it up.
6 - That Carmel of Mundelein just can’t dream to figure out that fourth quarter holding the lead thing.
7 - That whatever home field advantage Mt Carmel used to have at Gately has clearly lived to their beautiful new home field.
8 - That no team is unstoppable - ever.
9 - That with games remaining against Mt Carmel, Naz and Loyola, Marist is in trouble.
10 - That the race in the Dukane in year two appears to be headed for a fantastic finish.

On to week 5.

Another Warren Township shut out .... teams are avg 3 pts/game and they have shut out the first 2 opponents in NSC ... on to the next opponent ... see you in the playoffs ... home of six flags

JCA: don't count out the Hilltoppers just yet.

Although they are young and inexperienced, don't count them out. This could be a dangerous team for some 9-0 or 8-1 team to have to deal with in the early rounds of the playoffs (assuming JCA can find a way to 5 wins).

This team is starting to sound a lot like last year's team with a little less run prowess and a lot more passing potential.

We learned that there are copious very talented teams that can win in 8A and 7A.

We also learned that Cleveland St. Ignatius is not the power team we thought they were after beating LA. They lost 42-0 this weekend. Pickerington Central lost as well, a week after beating Naperville Central.

As long as LA and NC and WV continue to lose we're okay.

Like I said very early on....this is NOT a good year at all for IHSA football on an overall power team basis.

On a national basis I agree. But for us locals I think it is going to make for an amazing playoffs.

Totally agree
A bunch of teams with similar talent. Nobody really stands out from the pack. I think many of these teams will be much better come playoff time. Should be fun.

Oh dear god. I don’t know what BMF stands for but I don’t think anyone on here made that claim. However, I can assure you that no one will want to see LA come playoff time.
The UFC’s version of the WWE intercontinental Championship, BMF stands for Bad Mother F’er.

The claim was made when you started pointing to La and others who’d beat East Side. Just last week.

So BMF is the “next Friday” team you least want to see.

LA ain’t it.

Many people thought LA wasn’t “it” after 6 weeks last year, including me. I won’t make that mistake again. Moreover, I stand by my statement. In my opinion, there are several teams in IL that would beat ESL. LA included. I think there are teams that could beat LWE, Warren, HF, etc. no disrespect. All great programs. Any given Friday night (Saturday afternoon). However, your little ESL crusade (pun intended) is kinda weird. Based upon past posts, I don’t believe you attended the school. Do you personally feel disrespected in some way? That certainly wasn’t my intent. My guess is that you are all gas and no brakes, my man.

I think we learned that Cru90 didn’t watch the LA MC game. If he did, then either both are or both aren’t. But I don’t know what the trophy is for BMF so I’m out

Absolutely no way personally offended. ESL is my mother’s school, class of 1951, January.

You use the word “would” when it should be “could.” Then comma maybe.

Agreed. Low this year, but next year watch out! (Notice all have underclassman QBs)

Mt. Carmel
Loyola
Rita
Rice
Marist

All LOADED with underclassmen playing main roles this year, along with strong lower levels.

Newt, regarding your point no. 8, explain who exactly is going to beat ESL this year going forward. A Flyers team in 8A would leave room for discussion, but given their remaining Southwestern Conference and the fact that they will be in 5A in the post-season, I am tempted to rudely comment on your post. But in fairness, I'll wait for your analysis regarding who could beat them.

Mail them the trophy. I read every year a team is unbeatable. Read about it all last year about LWE. No such thing. But if that's the narrative you choose to subscribe to have at it.

Now the thread was what did we learn week 4.......NOT who can beat ESL. Just enjoy football while its here.
Amen to that! IMO, ESL is a quality football program and it would not be high school football in Illinois without them in the discussion as a top team in the state. Good luck to the Flyers going forward except if you happen to play Montini! LOL

Well, well, well, flyerforlife, so generous of you to suggest we "Just enjoy football while its [sic] here". Very easy attitude to have when your team is guaranteed a championship trophy Thanksgiving weekend.

Newt, still waiting for you tell us who is going to beat ESL. I'm not shy about telling you and anyone else that NO ONE will. The very least you can is to mention a few teams that may beat them, but I guess I can understand if you don't. You're playing apples and oranges bringing up LWE. Let me hit the key point for you again, SLOWLY. The Flyers are in 5A this year, 5A, not 8A as LWE was last year.

Undercenter3rd1,
none of the things you mention happening would hurt ESL in 5A. I'll say it one more time for you too; they will be in 5A. What is so hard for you, Newt and yes, NapervilleBuck to understand? Man, I thought you guys knew football. My bad.

Nice post, Gene K., but luck will have NOTHING to do with it.

Oh, man, this explaining thing is exhausting.

P.S. Oh, by the way, no one in the Southwestern Conference is going to beat them in the regular season. However, Naperville (Central) may give them a game the last game of the regular season --- NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know as much about football as I know. I am 54 years old and have been watching high level HS football since I was 15.

When I walked into the stadium at Neuqua and saw the Flyers warming up for the game I thought there was no way Neuqua would be within 30 points of that team. Not even a chance to hang.

Guess what? Looks can be deceiving. No way Purdue beats Ohio State last year based on talent and what the pundits say.

No way that Iowa beats Ohio State two years ago based on what the pundits say.

No way LWE loses a game last year, much less before the state title game.

There is a reason the games are played. No one......not you, me, Edgy, Newt, anyone can say for certain what will happen. Slow your roll, enjoy that magnificent football team that ESL has, and try, just for a second, to be humble about it and appreciate what they are..... an exceptionally talented football team that hasn’t won a thing.

I guess we will agree to disagree. My final thought on this issue (I promise), at least until after the Flyers win 5A: the 5A post-season for ESL, including the championship game, will be little more than a set of scrimmages they are required to go through by the IHSA. They get more competition week after week from their own second and third team players than they will see the rest of this entire season.

P.S. I agree with Edgy's sentiments (posted some time ago) regarding ESL playing in 5A, and I paraphrase: perhaps ESL's annihilation of Class 5A will lead their conference to allow them to once again petition up, or lead the IHSA to seed lower classes from 1-32. Correct me if I got the gist of your post wrong, Edgy, but that is certainly how I understood it.

Ok so now that I have had a chance to look at 5A here are the teams I think can contend.

Nazareth
Montini
JCA
Hillcrest
Simeon
Sacred heart

From the looks of it, 5A is no cakewalk. I remember an ESL team that was “unbeatable.” Had a player that is now in the pro football hall of fame. Guess what? They got beat.

Confidence is one thing. Cockiness, arrogance and the feeling of being infallible is something else.

If you think they are unbeatable I would suggest you watch tape from the Neuqua game. While Neuqua couldn’t stop ESL, ESL didn’t exactly stop Neuqua.
