What do we do to stop Newton?

My guess- man up weak side corner some, blitz weakside safety and LBs- hope for the best. Whatever we do- we'll be bringing 5 guys every play from somewhere. We'll give up a few big plays and probably get few big plays. We can't let him run, we have to make him throw.

I predict we win 34-27.</p>

I really think #4 has turned into an elite safety since the 2nd half of last season. White will have to have a big game too. Whitley is really going to be tested. When Newton lets it go, he throws it as hard as anyone. This offense scares me to death. Darvin Adams is a freak. I really think this is the toughest test our defense will face all season and I don't think it is close.

All the Cam for Heisman talk is absolutely ridiculous this early, but I think everyone should agree that he looked "as advertised" in the first game. That play where he juked about 4 d-linemen in the backfield and broke it outside for about 20 yards was just stupid. They are going to score and they are going to score on some big plays. I think we are going to have to play soft coverage and make them complete short to intermediary passes, hope Newton fires off the occasional high ball that he is prone to do. I am basically just hoping for some huge turnovers.

If we blitz, we can't let them hit slants over the middle. We also can't let Newton run on broken plays. We have to get pressure and cover the middle of the field. Make him throw outside the hashes and read the D.

He only threw a few passes and only completed 9 against Ark State.

He's got to beat us with his arm.

as much as I hate it - you have to make him throw it into coverage. if we get after him too much, he will cook us running the ball.

you focus too much on him, Fannin, McKalebb, and those other cats will burn us.

this is the scariest offense I have seen in a long time - we will have to be in the thirties to have a chance in this one.

It's a high school offense with lots of similar plays run out of various formations with lots of motion. In my opinion if they go no-huddle fast pace a lot they will gas their defense and this will be to our advantage. Their defense has little depth.

and mix up our coverages and blitzes. Try to confuse them. Thing is we need to make sure that we disguise a lot of things because they call their plays from the sideline, so Cam is not going to be making the calls. Mahlzahn is. So when we see them stand up like a bunch of prairie dogs, we need to make some late movement on our defense.

We need to make sure that we are sound on the option because that is a big part of this offense. With Cam being inaccurate as he is prone to be, we need to make sure that we get pressure on him to make him even more inaccurate.

Get him looking for where the hit is coming from next instead of watching plays develop and we'll win easily.

I want to see him rattled like the 2000 Florida team.

spent a LOT of time this summer doing defensive gameplanning for Newton and the Tigers. You know Dan wants this one bad given the snub Newton gave us and plus Auburn just flat out embarrassed our defense last year with the 49 points they lit us up for. Will be real interested to see what schemes we employ for this one.
