One day he says that we will not lose on the basis of money then he comes out and says that we need to be smart and aggressive. Is he saying that we are not going to match if the money is too much? I know that Mullen will not get 4 million from us but it seems odd to make the comment. All the signs are pointing the Gruden right now but this whole recruiting trip scares me a little.

a coordinator 600K but we can make our strength coach, if he is good - like Balis appears to be - highly paid compared to the rest of the country since they make a lot less money.

We're not just going to hand over blank checks.

The biggest salary doesn't necessarily = the best coach. I think SEC fans lose sight of what a competitive salary is. It's just another big ego contest like recruiting rankings.

There will probably come a point when a coach at MSU wants a certain salary, but we may find it more beneficial to go find another good coach for less money. Say in two years Dan Mullen wants $5mil to keep him away from the Notre Dame job. We'll probably wish him well and go look for the next Dan Mullen that wants a shot and a $1.5mil salary.

eta: Good point by DS. This applies to assistants as well.

I think he means we need to be proactive at making sure that our staff is compensated with competitive salaries relative to their positions and relative to the SEC. At the same time, we have to keep in mind what type of budget we operate with, which if I'm not mistaken, is the smallest or one of the smallest in the SEC even when you add in the money from the tv deal. So, we probably have to be more creative by supplementing salaries with bonuses, incentive packages, etc.
