I think we'd all agree that Notre Dame and Michigan wouldn't make the current top 5.

I'm still talking "programs" and tradition and history still count for something, or otherwise 'right now' could be interpreted as the Top 5 in thefinal 2010/11 polls.

Current Top 5 football programs

1. Bama
2. Oklahoma
3-5. Ohio State, LSU, Florida

USC and Texas bumped themselves off the list with subpar years and probation/cheating by USC. Florida had a down year, but still won the Outback Bowl in a big way. Ohio State could find themselves falling off depending on what happens with Tressel. But who would move up? After doing some quick research, it's not as easy as you'd think.

Texas may still belong on the Top 5, but they had such a horrible year that they're going to have to earn their way back. Oregon is getting closer and with the money being poured into that program, may have enough continued success to get into a current top 5. I wasn't sure if I should include LSU, but they have won 2 recent NC's and are still wining 10-11 games/season, even with what seems to be a goofball coach.

My biggest thing was where to put Boise State (and maybe TCU). Both have won BCS bowls and are among the top teams in winning percentage over the past 3 or past 5 years. In fact, Boise State is #1 in winning percentageover both over the past 5 years andthe past 10 years, and they are even #3 in winning percentageover the past 20 years. Right behind Ohio State and Florida.

What about Viriginia Tech? Just looked them up and they've won 10 or 11 games for 7 straight seasons and 12 out of the last 16 years. Very consistently good, but never really in championship contention (other than ACC Championships).
Bama is only #20 in winning percentage over the past 5 years and #32 over the past 10, but right now they have a 2009 NC and Saban, as well as a 100,000+ stadium. They have the history and tradition of an all-time top program, and appear to have returned to greatness with no end in sight with their current coaching staff and ongoing top recruiting.

but who's quibbling.

I think Florida State is poised to return to greatness in the very near term. Miami is sucking hard right now. And I think Muschamp is completely over his head. Flarda State is about to completely own that state in recruiting over the next three to five years.

And while Bowden was not Croom bad... he has been holding FSU back. If Jimbo Fisher has the ability... FSU will be a good team in the near future.
