What does Elgin Bailey do well?

He's not a great athlete or basketball player. That's for sure.

But...it seems to me that our guards are trained to look for him EVERY time down the floor. The guards feed him like he is a Rhodes type player on fast breaks, etc. Someone needs to tell our players that neither Varnardo or Bailey need to touch the ball as much as Rhodes. Basically, whoever happens to be playing in the post on a given possession is our go-to-offensive player.

Bailey needs to continue to do what he did last year(add 5-8 minutes a game)...and nothing more. He can play solid defense and rebound adequately. On the offensive end, he shouldn't shoot it unless it's a putback. That's all we need him to do and we can be successful.</p>

I actually like Bailey as well. I think he can score in the post and doesn't mind banging with players on the defensive end. I think he hustles as well. Is he all-SEC potential, probably not, but with 20 minutes a game I think he's average about 8-10 points and 7 rebounds with a couple of blocks. He's clearly improved his free throw shooting.

Besides fumble passes, turn the ball over, brick shots, and foul of course.

well besides all that, he:
-shoots free throws well. compared to last season at least. hell, id say he is actually now an average post player in terms of FT ability. i think he is now 17-30 on the year. not great, but you can easily see the improvement. he improves.
-hustle. the guy hustles up and down the court on each play. he also doesnt mind getting on the ground and going after a loose ball.
-he has improved(there is that word again) his post play. he had a great move tonight down low that Knight just loved.
-he is nimble and quick off his feet. obviously people knock his weight, but he is our second leading shot blocker at just under 2/game. he has 20 so far this season. in how little he plays, he already has 20. the guy is...improving.

i really dont mind him playing. he hustles, he plays D, he alters and blocks shots, and his FT and post footwork has improved.

i do agree with the complaint that the perimeter guys seem to feed him way more than needed...and that he also shoots more than he should and forces some shots as a result. but that **** is teachable, and Bailey has shown that he is able to learn...since he is improving.

tonight, you say he has no hands and turns the ball over. well, he had 2. 2 turnovers. but there were many more balls that came to him that were turnovers, its just that those were assessed to the guards that made horrible forced passes into him that were illadvised and sloppy.
you cant seriously ***** about the post man who is in close against a couple of defenders when a forced last second pass comes into him at his shins, right?

And will also point out that almost all entry passes to the post were at our guys' shins. Unbelievably sloppy game.

exactly. and not only were they horrible entry passes because they were down low, they were dumped off in closed quarters. the defense had collaped, and then the entry pass came in, so there are more defense hands to start slapping at the ball.

...this isnt just something that happened last night, its a season long thing.

Elgin Bailey is an athlete. Your clueless if you believe otherwise.

As for being productive on the floor, he has some improvements to make. As mentioned above, he has to limit his turnovers. He also forces shots. However, he defends, he works, and rebounds. His offensive game is slowly getting better but, he, like the rest of our team, needs to slow down.

Our team has to learn that "slow" in basketball is not a bad thing. We get down 6-8 points, and we try to make it up in one possession. As a team, we force shots because there is no offensive leadership on the floor. I also wish that Stansbury would stop the 5 for 5 sub pattern. Bobby Knight pointed it out several times last night. We seem to never have our best 5 on the floor (in my opinion anyway). I would love to see Osby get minutes with Bost, Varnardo, R. Johnson, and Turner. Barry is struggling right now. And if you think back, he started his career being a solid sixth man coming off the bench. Maybe he would be more comfortable in doing that. He is trying to do to much. Remember Ontario Harper, it seems he did the same thing there for a while. Coming off the bench, he could still get his minutes, and i think it will take a little of the pressure off of him.
