What does failure look like at WVU?

When Holgorsen was extended it was years after he outdid the coach he replaced with a mix of players he brought in and that remained with him. But he coached and improved them the entire season.

WVU got more wins from Holgorsen than from any coach outside of Nehlen, but in a third of the time.

Only a fool would think what Holgorsen did transitioning a depleted roster from underrecruiter Stewart, taking WVU into the toughest schedules they’d ever faced in the BIG 12 and winning at a higher clip than WVU ever had,was a bad thing.

WVU should have quickly extended Holgorsen in 2016 and helped him gain a top notch D coordinator ( which Gibson is now turning into at NC State but wasn’t ready in his first gig at WVU- although he wasn’t worse than what Brown is doing on defense now giving KU 55 points). If that would have happened WVU would be in the upper echelon of the BIG 12 now instead of in the dregs.
Holgs pretty much said he didn't think he could recruit to win at WVU, so I think he would have left no matter what. Neal was just a bad hire, problem is extending him for no reason but fear he'd do well and leave. Shayne is too stupid to realize if he did well and a blue blood wanted him....they'd pay any buyout.

I think WVU and Shane Lyons really believe in Neal Brown. I don’t think it’s anything more than that with the buyout. Maybe this year will change that? I don’t know. However, IMO, year 4 should show improvement and so far it has not. I have a feeling next year will be the deciding fate for Brown. I don’t see him fired this year unless he goes 4-8 or worse. I think an ultimatum will be given for next year.

4-8 isn't a lock looking at the schedule. Losing to Kansas makes that a tough road, especially as it was a home game. Towson, Kansas State, and TCU are the remaining winnable home games....who can we even beat on the road to get to 4?

Outside of Towson, they’ve played the easiest part of the schedule already. You are right. It’s no lock at all.

Holgorsen bowl record at WVU was 2-5. And one of them was his first year with Stewart’s players (Geno, Tavon, Stedman, etc). And Pat White won 4 in a row between Rodriguez and Stewart. No idea what you are talking about lol. And I guess you think Baylor and TCU are historically better programs? They’ve each won the Big 12. TCU was outside the P5 until the Big 12 lol. And your statement WVU was 4 points away from the Big 12 CCG confirms what I said. Almost isn’t good enough.
When you look at Holgorsen's 8 years at wvu the majority of his signature wins came early in his tenure. If you divide it down the middle 1st four years vs last four years you can see some disturbing trends. In Holgorsen's last 4 seasons he only beat 1 team that finished the year ranked in the top 25 Which was the Texas win in 2018. When the years went by and the team had more and more of His finger prints on it the less success they actually had. He did have the 10 win season in 2016 but there weren't any marquee wins. It ended with a beat down at the hands of an unranked Miami team. I can see why there are People who want to Bring Back Rich. I can't understand why anyone would want Holgorsen Back. He blew a ton of games like you mentioned in an earlier post, In 2018 when he choked against Okie state then losing To Oklahoma and getting embarrassed in a bowl game pretty much summed up what his Wvu Tenure was like.

I don't know if RR is the answer and I get trying NB as he was more likely to stick around being from the region, but Holgs would both never come back and only came as a stepping stone. At this point I just want a coach who brings attitude and discipline. It seems HCNB has brought neither.

Losing to your arch rival.
then....
Losing at home to the worst team in your conference

I dont think there is anything realistic that he can do to salvage the season that would turn opinion around..
Maybe better stated as “…Losing at home to the FORMERLY worst team in… conference.” Play like they did against us and they will several conference games this year.
Reasonable folks should admit that Kansas played a nearly perfect game (especially on offense). They were prepared and executed beautifully. We had a bad defensive game—it happens. Simple as that with nothing deeper to consider.
Our defense got beat by their offense. The outcome does NOT carry with it all the
peripheral nonsense regarding coaching and coaches, etc. that is being tossed around by so many unreasonable, unthinking, venum filled fair weather fans. We are not a horrible team! Our coaches are not bums and incapable leading quite a good group of talented athletes. Try laying off of them and allowing the season to proceed.

I am not saying that RR the man is the answer but I do agree with the posters who think his philosophy is. Wvu is the only school that I can think of that has both run the spread option and Air Raid. We had much better success when we ran a spread option type of an offense. On Saturday we saw what a well run spread option offense can be. The Kansas offense has the ability to run and Pass. It has the ability to control tempo in ways that the Air Raid offenses don't. It also has a ton of misdirection plays and plays that have deception. If you go back to last season their offense has been keeping Defenses off balance. The spread option offense also doesn't require as much NFL talent. The problem with the Air Raid is you have to have A QB that can make all the throws for it to be effective. We have that In Daniels this year but were not going to get that every year. There is also very little deception in the air raid. Its just like a standard Pro set with 3+ WR. Everyone knows what you're going to do and the teams that have 4 DL that can get pressure on the QB and corners that cover receivers like syrup on ice cream have no problem stopping it. I saw a post on one of the other boards the guy mentioned that no team running an Air Raid offense has ever won a National Championship. Urban Meyer won 3 National Championships running a spread option. You have to remember that not all Air Raids or Spread options are the same and what's best for one school might not be what's best for the other. In Wvu's case we have had very little success winning big games with the Air Raid while the Spread option delivered us are greatest wins.

I think People are underestimating Kansas. They showed signs of getting better at the end of last season. I think they will finish middle of the pack in the Big 12 this year maybe better with a little luck

Still our most winnable home game I think.

Holgorsen was four pts from getting WVU into the BIg 12 CCG. Do you understand how difficult that is with schools like Oklahoma, Baylor, OSU, TCU, Texas etc competing with you for that spot? Bill Stewart couldn’t even win the Big East but Holgorsen did- it took numerous years for Holgorsen to refill the roster to play in the BIG 12 and just as he was getting there, Lyons began sabotaging his recruiting playing games with extensions. Holgorsen won as many bowl games as anyone at WVU— so no idea what you are babbling about there- WVU has never fared well in bowls cause players are injured, players leave early and the opponents are usually very good to excellent teams— but Holgorsen got WVU there and won as many as other coaches at WVU.

Right when Holgorsen had WVU able to make those coveted CCGs, another AD blunder pushed him out. If he were still at WVU then wins wouldn’t be a thing of the past.
I may agree with your comment about Lyons sabotaging Holgs recruiting ..... BUT from the beginning his recruiting classes were mediocre. And he walked away from every WV kid. That's sad when he left 4* players sign with other P5 schools.

That was tough to swallow, even just because it's a matter of pride for the kids and for us.

Holgorsen's recruiting was right in line with WVUs historical recruiting rankings and were not worse than Browns any way you shake it. He put several Mountaineers in the pros too.

Browns bowl wins at WVU--1 win
Holgorsens bowl wins at WVU--2 wins
Stewarts bowl wins at WVU--2 wins
Rodriguez bowl wins at WVU--2 wins
Bobby Bowden--1 win
Clarence Spears--1 win
Jim Carlen--1 win
Marshall Glenn--1 win
Dudley Degroot--1 win

That's it except for Nehlen.
only Don Nehlen won more--4 bowls in his time at WVU--Holgorsen won as many as anyone else to ever coach the Mountaineers, yet oddly, you only bash him for not having more bowl success for WVU. Hmmm.

Hello anti white racist prick.
prick- that would be you. Anti white? Lol. No, understanding that there is racism and wanting it changed doesn’ t make one “ anti white”- it makes one anti RACIST.

You being a racist of course who can’t post without your Neanderthal racist rhetoric may be incapable of comprehension and that is sad. You are hell bent on destruction and hate- you don’t have to be.

Lmao! Rodriguez last 3 years he won 11, 11, and 10 games. And would’ve won 11 again had he not left before the Fiesta Bowl. He also won his last 2 Bowls at WVU. Stewart was 2-1 in bowls and won 9, 9, and 9 games all 3 of his years. Comparing Holgorsen to them is idiotic.

I love it when Bucky said we should have extended Holgorsen twice. The first time he is referring to is after the 2015 season. How many coach's get contract extensions for going 7-5 in year five? That's the type of record that gets most people fired. Then there was the extension that didn't happen in 2018. If Dana wanted an extension then he shouldn't have blown a 17 point lead to a 6-6 Oklahoma State team. The next week he followed that up by Losing to Oklahoma despite scoring 56 points. Then there was that god awful performance against Syracuse in the bowl game. Some these guys think the Orange Bowl was a regular occurrence under his reign. It was nothing more then a vary rare exception.
How many coaches get a contract extension after going 7-5 in year 5?
See Neal Brown. He got one earlier than that and hadn't won anything to speak of.
