What does Relf have to do

to become the greatest QB in MSU history for you?

He has led us to a 9 win season with a New Year's Day Bowl win, was the MVP of the Gator Bowl and a win over Florida on the road. I know he didn't start the 09 Egg Bowl, but he certainly emerged during that game, and that was a huge win and turning point for our program.

Aside from that, he has a chance to become our all-time TD passes leader- he has 18 TD passes, which is as many as John Bond had his entire career- the school record is 38 by Derrick Taite. Relf is also one of the few QB's that has more TD passes than INT's. (Sad) He has also rushed for 7 TD's and 1219 rushing yards in his career- compared to Bond's 2,280 rushing yards and 24 rushing TD's. You throw in his 2085 passing yards and he is close to MSU's top 10 there- he would have to pass for over 4,000 yards for the school record there, so unless Mike Leach becomes our OC, that ain't happening.

I certainly don't think Relf is there yet as our greatest QB- but he certainly is in the discussion. But he compares somewhat favorably to Bond, who accounted for 42 TD's in his career. Relf has 25 right now. So, if he gets 17 passing and rushing combined- he had 18 combined last year, so it's certainly doable- he would surpass Bond's TD totals, and if he gets 20 TD passes, which is not as likely but still possible, he could tie Taite, and in doing so would put up better numbers than Madkin as well.

So, for me if he at the very least passes Bond, and leads us to a 10 win season, including another NYD Bowl and we win that- he's going to get my vote. I think he has a great chance to do it since this year is his senior year and should be his best year in theory. We've also got enough weapons for him to throw to and we have good RB's that can also allow him to operate in the passing game effectively. And we should be pretty good on the o-line.

I'm pulling for him because obviously he's a Bulldog, but also because I think it's a great story about how he came from a poor football background and now he could become our best QB ever.

Unrealistic, dream season type stats would be 2500 yards, 20 TD passing. That would truly cement him as one of the best, statistically in MSU history.<div>
</div><div>Realistic, I'll take 2000 yards, 15 TDs passing, 500+ yds rushing, 5-8 rushing TDs, 7+ wins.

If he does well: as he goes, so goes MSU football fortunes in 2011.
That is all.

PS - We do have some backup QBs with potential creds.

10 wins puts him to where there are arguments between several of them. More than that puts him alone, as he would have accomplished something no one else had.

1. Bond as a true freshman went 9-2 and en route beat BAMA (number one in the nation for 2 years), LSU, AUBURN and Ole Miss. In a row and took us to abowl game when there werent 117of them.

That feat alone is something that puts him up there as one of the greatest. Yes, the cast around him was incredible. But nonetheless, a true freshmen in the SEC just doesnt do that.

2. Relf survived a horrible coach and absorbed a new system 1/2 way through his career and proved every MSU fan wrong with one freaking game, then followed that up with a solid season that landed us a new years bowl game.

Stats just dont really compare. I'd say you'd have to compare this year and last year to Bonds 1st two years with a heavy asterisk on Bond's ability to do it as a freshman.

There is that little thing of remembering that there were OTHER qb's in MSU's past that probably were better overall qb's. Jackie Parker comes to mind.

possible. Jackie Parker was all SECat least once, led in touchdowns, went on to win 2 Grey Cups as a player and 1 as a coach. I am too lazy to look up his career stats at MSU, only 2 years. Comparing the way the game was back then vs the game today, Relf does not approach Parker. Madkinis the winningest QB in history of MSU, so he should be in the mix even though he is maligned by many.

but because he showed us he knows where his limits are. He is not an "aggressive passer" by trying to force the ball where it doesn't need to go (the only exception would be the LSU game), he knows where to miss with passes (that is probably combined with the coaching of Mullen, which in turn, really cut down on interceptions), and he has shown poise in the pocket when he needs to. The only thing I think he can really get better with is knowing when to pull the trigger to move out of the pocket, either by tucking the ball and running forward or rolling out of the pocket. <div>
</div><div>I don't think he will be a Madkin kind of flop because he still has his weapons around him, and to me, the biggest x-factor with the offense this year is not our ability at the skilled positions, it is going to be how our o-line steps up. If they can't give Relf time to do anything, our whole season will be a bust, I think, but if they can give Relf time in the backfield, he could potentially make a lot of good things happen for us (along with the rest of the offense). </div><div>
</div><div>I think more than any QB we have ever had, Relf knows what he can and can't do with the ball. He has become a humble leader for this team and, although certainly not the most talented QB I have ever seen, he certainly has shown he can manage the offense well. He has those intangibles where he doesn't get rattled and he doesn't try to do too much, and those qualities combined last year (along with Mullen's coaching) to give us a very effective offense last year. </div>

and set some school records while doing it. If he set enough records, a 10-win season might get him there.
