up to begin production this fall. They have around 800 employees working at the moment. I've flown in and out of Tupelo a couple of times over the last two months, there were several Japanese on each flight.

The employee parking lot is full every day. So people are working and getting paid. Some employees are now training at the N. KY plant. The local suppliers/manufacting have been having some job fairs.

they put the brakes on the plan when the recession hit. Went into a wait and see mode. When GM went bankrupt they took over the NUMMI plant in California and since it was Toyota's only union run plant they decided to shut it down. They moved all the equipment from there to Mississippi and started ramping up when auto sales picked back up

On a fun note the head of Toyota decided he really liked Elon Musk over at Tesla Motors and they essentially gave them the Freemont, CA plant. So Tesla now has a huge production facility to try and make their battery only cars. Of course Toyota also bought in to the company so they have some ownership. Just thought it was interesting since Tesla pretty much got the plant for nothing.

and have now moved that to San Antonio where they have added capacity since the Tundra is made there. There are rumblings about the Tundra, since the Japaneese have no history with full size trucks, but that is the truck center. As an aside, I know of someone who was in on the deal to bring the plant to Blue Springs: Toyota was really suprised by the area with very good high schools--Tupelo, Pontotoc, Oxford, etc, the hospital in Tupelo was a huge plus, and the availability of a skilled workforce with manufacturing skills. They said that it well surpassed the workforce in San Antonio.

would be more likely. Right after I got married I lived for several months in an apartment on Jefferson street just down the street from Milam school. Every birthweek and deathweek they would block off Jeffferson in front of Milam for the tour buses. Most of them were filled with either Brits or Japanese.
