John Travolta - Back in the mid 80's in a restaurant in Daytona Beach.Always thought he would have been a massive *******, but he was extremely nice to everyone who wanted a picture or autograph. Thought my wife was going to faint.

Joe B Hall - Came across as just an old country gentlemen when I met him.

Tim Couch - Nice guy, probably just like most random dudes from small town Kentucky.

Robin Trower - Just as calm and collected as he is on stage.

Rick Pitino - He was still at UK and I didn't actually meet him, but was close enough to him to watch him be an *** hat to a group of about 6-8 youngsters.

Tubby Smith - Just the polar opposite of Pitino. Tubby seemed like a guy you'd be happy to have as a neighbor.

Ralph Hacker - Had a nice conversation with him and his wife one night on the way out of Rupp after the post game show. Very nice guy.

John Small - Played for the Falcons and Lions in the early 70's. Spoke at our high school. Super good dude who I thought would have made a great football coach, at least at the high school level.

Derrick Hord - He was a local guy for me anyway. Very nice.

Bill Gatton - Met him at a tournament where Ron Mercer was playing. I had a UK jacket on and was walking back to my seat at halftime somebody grabbed me by the arm, and it was Gatton. Talked UK basketball and Mercer with him for probably 15 minutes.

Kevin Nash - Saw him in the airport in Atlanta. He was signing autographs for several kids, and I stopped for just a second and said "hey, didn't you used to play basketball for Tennessee?" He looked like he didn't know what to say for a second, the laughed and said "yeah". I said, "yeah, I thought so" and walked away while he had a WTF? look on his face.

I met Chesty Puller in 1968. I was four years old. My dad was getting off the boat and he was there meeting people in SF CA. I still remember it because he called me Mister. Giant of a man, although he was not tall.

I actually found all of them pretty funny, engaging, and human.. except maybe the fourth one.. not so much.
How did you meet Michael Jordan? He is the person I would most like to meet. About 26 years ago I was in middle school and our family was in Chicago. We found out where Jordan lived and where the mansion was that he was building. The house he lived in at the time was in a neighborhood about like Palomar here in Lexington. Nice 2 story home but “normal” neighborhood, no gates or anything. While we were out front taking pictures, his wife and 2 boys came to the door to get a UPS delivery. His boys were waving to the weirdos (us) sitting in front of their house. The house he was building was the 56,000 sq ft mansion.

Met and spoke with him twice in private airports.
Both times toward end of playing days.

I met Nicki Taylor at a Derby party in ‘99.

She was surprisingly down to earth and very nice.

I’ve also met Fred Couples....not as nice as I thought he would be.

Question? Always had a theory that Billy D. would have loved to take over from Pitino but Rick kept him from taking the job. Think he did it again when he was at UL. Did he ever talk about turning us down twice? I know UK was interested. Had he followed Pitino I think he would still be the UK HC and have a couple titles.
He and I only discussed family, vacation spots, and basketball in general, nothing specific about the past.

Ran into Perry Stevenson about a month ago. Nice guy.

Where is ole Perry. I’ve got a nice 20x24 of his dunk I’d like him to swipe in silver for me if possible.

Know a bunch of MLB players from my time working in minor league front offices.

Best person: Blake Snell who just won the Cy Young. Joc Pederson is also a good fella but quiet

Biggest Douche: Andrew Toles, OF for LA Dodgers. Self entitled prick but I do have a funny story about him that isn’t appropriate for the board.

Also know a guy who was a detective in Breaking Bad, Robby Sanchez, fantastic dude

I want to work in minor league front offices how do I do that.

Another name
Ronnie Dunn- lead singer of Alabama (cool dude)

Did he touch your young daughters? He had a problem with that?

I met Clinton and Gore when they came to west tn back in the 90’s. Bill was quite the ladies man a lot of people don’t know that.

The particular minor league team website, PBEO website and if you’re straight from college and looking for entry level positions, go to baseball winter meetings.

Then it gets to be all about who you know

Gave hang gliding lessons to Michael Douglas. Very quiet (didn't want to disclose his identity) but athletic and caught on quick. I did not know who he was until after he left and the owner of the hang gliding shop told me. This was in 1979 before he had any top billings.

He had a 5 year top billing on TV in the 70's prior to that.

Like most UK fans who have ever been to a UK game Kenny Walker. He was a great guy and really embraces the UK fans.

Met Dale Earnhardt Jr once around 2001. He was a really arrogant guy then but he seems to have grown up a lot since then.

Ran into Darryl Strawberry once crossing a street in Manhattan but didn't get to speak to him.

My Cousin played for the Birmingham Barons when Michael Jordan played. We always went to spring training and I got a chance to meet and talk to Michael a tad. Was a bit of a prick to be honest. Not mean necessarily but just not that personable.

Then when my cousin got called up when Robin Ventura broke his ankle I got to meet Frank Thomas. I was a young kid. I went up to him to ask him for his autograph and he responded "Get the F away from me lil punk." Never will forget that one. My dad was LIVID lol.

Rode the elevator with Rosie Grier and Karen Valentine when I was a kid back in the 70s.

Grevey is a family friend, met several Bullets players and various NBAers, Gervin being my favorite.

Saw Charles Bronson film a scene for Death Wish 2 while on vacation in LA early 80s.

What famous people have you met and how was the encounter?

Some posters were talking about this in a different thread and it was really interesting. Figured I would get a thread going on it to get some more of you crazy people involved.

So who have you met and how did you meet them? How awesome were they? Or, in most cases it seems, how big of a prick did they turn out to be?

Let’s hear it!

Probably the most famous I met was OJ Simpson. Working a server at Cracker Barrel on Newtown Pike 2007 he came in with 10 white people. We had customers coming up to our manager wanting us to tell him to leave but we didn't. Ironically a week later, Mr Simpson was kicked out of Jeff Ruby's in Louisville. For the crime he was accused (committed) of he seemed like a nice guy. :)

Also Jerry Springer came in on a Sunday morning and he was very friendly on his way back to Cincy.

Cracker Barrel good place to see celebrities lol

Pales in comparison to many of you but I met Joker Phillips while he was the OC at UK. My wife and I were on our honeymoon in Mexico at an all inclusive. Hotel was doing a gambling theme for their nightly entertainment. I look up and there he is across the room. I go over and introduce myself as a fan from Lexington. He was very cordial. Told my wife he was probably thinking this idiot is going to be buggingme at the pool every day telling me what plays to run.

Hate the Reds?

Met all 3 on numerous occasions over the years (baseball camps, outings, dinners, etc)...always cordial and talkative.
Nope , grew up watching the reds. I could see Riverfront stadium from my living room, and even went to games at old Crosley field. I bet you're not from Cincinnati. It's a pretty well established fact those guys are ********. Or at least they were when they were stars

A couple of buddies recommended that I tell these two little stories:

Back around 1979 I was about 25 and manager of a successful restaurant. (Some of you Louisvillians may remember Mamma Grisanti.)

Jay Stein, head of Stein Mart, was about to open their first store in Louisville. (I think it is still there -- in St. Matthews on Shelbyville Road across from the Mall.)
So Jay rented out our restaurant for the evening to have a grand opening party. They invited family, friends, and some minor celebrities -- among them was Al Gore, Sr. -- long-time Senator and Congressman from Tennessee -- father of eventual Vice President Al Gore.

Late in the evening, Jay rushed up to me and handed me the keys to his top of the line new BMW. He asked me to rush (former) Senator Gore to the airport for his flight back to Washington.

They had a private plane for him, but Jay said that Washington would not allow planes to land after midnight.

Then he said that I need to hurry; and he would pay any speeding tickets. I stepped on it and away we went -- just Senator Gore and me.

********

Around 1985 I worked at the downtown Chicago Marriott. Big hotel; 47 (?) stories, so we often used the elevators.

[All of the visiting teams that played the legendary '85 Bears stayed at our hotel. The Bears of course had the home field advantage in the playoffs, so the Giants and the Rams stayed there as well. I'll hold those stories for another time.]

So a friend of mine and I were headed to a department head meeting and Dick Cavett hops on the elevator. Just the three of us.

We introduced ourselves ("Are you enjoying your stay?" etc.)

(This was 30+ years ago. Technology was not the same as now.)

There was a pause. Cavett said that he was surprised that the urinal flushed automatically.

My friend Joyce said, "Yes, also the faucets."

Another pause.

Cavett said, "Oh gosh. Now you know I didn't wash my hands."

Met Ramel Bradley at the Fayette Mall. Spent about an hour giving him some ball handling tips. He thanked me and went on his way. Next game he was much improved even though Tubby wouldn't allow him to play fast paste.

Served tables at Rafferty's on Breckinridge Lane in Louisville from 2001 to 2006. Waited on the following:

Rick Pitino
Bobby Petrino
Travis Ford
Rex Chapman
Derrick Anderson
Phil Simms
The Kentucky Hammer
Pat Day
Steve Assmussen (been on a plane with him too)
Mitch McConnell

All those folks behaved like normal human beings behave except for Pitino, he would not directly tall to anyone at the restaurant and head one of his assistants order for him. He wouldn't even look at you.

Phil Simms was by far the nicest, his mom lived near there and he brought her in. He was extremely polite and warm, their check was $23 and he tipped $20.

Kevin Nash also served in the US Army. I met him during his post-UT playing days and pre-WWF while he was an MP in Giessen, Germany in the 1980s. He wasn't as "roided out" back then. I had no idea he played center for the Vols until some officer told me. Afterward, I remembered who he was. He is quite tall.

I've met several famous people but only spent time with two.

Pat Day - very, very nice and zero arrogance. He said he was arrogant and selfish when he was young but he had a very humbling experience that changed him.

Andy Green, San Diego Padres Manager. He is also very nice and humble. He regularly attends and even preaches at my church during the offseasoff. He has lots of good stories, too.
