What I hope our defense doesn't do

This Saturday. I have sen it before and maybe I'm wrong. Seems like when we get up a few scores the defense seems to get a little relaxed. Kind of like they are taking plays off. Maybe the players are thinking hey we are up, I can relax a little.

And then the next thing we are in a dog fight because the other team has made a comeback.

Have you guys noticed this as well?

In basketball terms we need to press

Them full court all day long. Press their receivers at the Los and never let the Qb get in a rhythm.

I was talking like in 2nd or 3rd qtr. seems like when we get a good lead we back off. I want to see a killer instinct. Get after them and leave no doubt who the better team is.

we are going to need a lot of man, which i think works for us better in the long run. we need to bring extra pressure and force quick decisions. the good thing is we wont have to respect that run game too much, so we can afford to take some run game risks, but we are going to have to find a way to shut down that passing game. its a tough assignment and i hope we have some players in the secondary step up this week. we will need it.

yep. nailed it. they will get some yards no matter what we do, so we need to do our best to force some mistakes.

I couldn't disagree more

They will torch us in man. They will torch us if we play a soft zone. We need to run press zone schemes and bring pressure from everywhere. I do think that we need to drop a D-lineman though. We will have to run nickel against this team and I don't want to see us drop B Brown, he has been all over the field this season. I think we need to run a 3-3-5, but never, I repeat never only bring 3. We could get exposed with draw plays, but it is the lesser of two evils.

I've probably watched 10 mins of A&M football this year. How is Hill under pressure? Or has he been under any tremendous amount yet?

I think we can hold them to FGs in the redzone when there is less space to cover and our front 7 can bite down. That'll be big IMO. Of course that means we can't be giving up TDs of 30 and 40 yards.

I agree with the man pressure. Bring the CBs up, make them complete balls down the field.

Stats seem to show that once we have a lead, we take the 4th quarter off; first three games, we had a lot of 2nd & 3rd team players play ...

Score by Quarters 1st 2nd 3rd 4th OT Total
Mississippi State 41 58 56 10 0 165
Opponents 3 23 14 26 0 66

Against Arkansas, he wasn't very good at all throwing the ball downfield. Especially if he had any pressure.

I think our Linebackers are the X factor here, in both coverage and blitzing schemes. This might be the game we see a lot of BMac sticking his hand in the ground, as opposed to dropping back in coverage. I'm looking for Matt Wells to have a big time game, flying around the field sniffing out screens and shallow crossing routes.

being in man doesnt imply its 1v1. we have safeties to help out. our zone is a total disaster because nobody steps up to close the seams when players are in the area. everyone is where they should be until the receiver finds and sits in the soft spot. then its a simple pass and catch. ive seen it a million times with our team and its extremely frustrating. cheetah is going to have to play a big role and not bite on the run fake. the reality is that we are going to have to bring extra rushers..at least in my opinion. if trill has all day, we are screwed. i agree on the 3 man rush....if we do that, its game over.

Stats also show for the last several years we have been money when leading after half time which includes the 4th quarter.

They are going to get guys open deep. They will at times catch them for big gains but most of the time Hill will be under pressure and will not make a very good throw. They will get their yardage but once in the red zone State's defense will stop them to a field goal. Not much green in front of the offense to work with.

Hell we can't do it all guys, they only allow us 11 on the field, so we can't play man with 2 safeties to help and bring 4-6 pass rushers every snap.

If they've got 4 wide and play 2-man (2 deep safeties), that leaves us vulnerable in the box to the run game.

That's why people play zone against spread teams that can throw and run. Playing man tips your hand, but we can disguise what we're doing and leave more people in the box pre-snap and constantly change up looks more if we're in zone.

Good thing Hill doesn't run as much as Manziel, that at least makes it to where we don't have to worry about the QB running, which makes these offenses extremely dynamic

i dont want to bring 6 very often and hardly every snap. we get a respectable pass rush with 4. if we bring more than 5 EVERY snap, we are in for a long afternoon. our front 4 are one-of if not the best front 4 in stopping the rush by themselves. that affords us the opportunity to do some other things. wells is essentially another corner with a linebackers body and he can handle every TE in this league and a good number of slot guys. we have a little more flexibility than most teams with our front 7 and they are studs at stopping the run. hell, we want them to run the ball as much as possible. we will have to take some calculated risks because aTm knows most of their yards are coming through the air, not on the ground. im not saying we shouldnt do any zone. we need to have a good balance of man and zone, but on most critical 3rd downs, we need to bring some pressure or kenny will shred us and typically, that lends itself to man. on gameday, we will soon find out what we need to do to generate that pressure and everything is in flux until we find something that works. its about adjustments and counter adjustments. just my opinion on the matter.
