Offense:

Pretty simple based on this breakdown. If we have our 20 or
better for starting position, average grade was just shy of a B. When less than
that, it was just over a D. Field position killed us all day. Despite the
penalties, the bad starting position was almost entirely due to special teams.

Drive 1: Own 8, punt. -4 yards. F

Drive 2: Own 30, INT ret for TD. 1 yard. F

Drive 3: Own 38, TD.62 yards. A

Drive 4: Own 33, TD. 67 yards. A

Drive 5: Own 11, punt. 14 yards. D

Drive 6: Own 1, punt. 27 yards. D

Drive 7: Own 14, punt. 7 yards. F

Drive 8: Own 20, FG. 70 yards. B

Drive 9: Own 20, knee. -1 yards. No grade (end of half)

Drive 10: Own 20, FG. 65 yards. B

Drive 11: Own 17, punt. 45 yards. C

Drive 12: Own 20, punt. 26 yards. D

Drive 13: Own 17, TD. 83 yards. A

Drive 14: Own 33, end of game. 66 yards. B (end of game)

Overall: Just over a C (Call it a C-, 1 pt for F, 5 pt for
A)

Defense:

I was more surprised by this. In 13 drives, the defense
forced a punt 6 times and a field goal try twice. They also intercepted a pass
for a TD. When AU started inside their 20, they scored once (two tries). From
the 20-30, they scored a FG, threw a pick for a TD and punted three times (five
tries). From the 31-onward, they scored 3 TD, a FG and punted twice (6 tries). So
in average to below average field position (30-yards in), the defense graded
nearly a B. From good average field position (31-yards onward), the defense
graded right at C. Not nearly as bad as I originally thought.

Drive 1: Opp 36, TD. 36 yards. D

Drive 2: Own 21, punt. 8 yards. A

Drive 3: Own 24, punt.7 yards. A

Drive 4: Own 30, punt. 15 yards. B

Drive 5: Own 24, INT ret for TD. 0 yards. A

Drive 6: Own 46, TD. 54 yards. D

Drive 7: Own 41, TD. 59 yards. D

Drive 8: Own 20, FG. 54 yards. C

Drive 9: Own 50, FG. 30 yards. C

Drive 10: Own 36, punt. 19 yards. B

Drive 11: Own 8, TD. 92 yards. F

Drive 12: Own 18, punt. 20 yards. B

Drive 13: Own 32, punt. 6 yards. A

Overall: Well over a C (call it a C+)

Special Teams:

8 chances on KO returns: 4 touchbacks, 16.2 per return
(returns started at 2, 0, 15, 1), best return started at 15 for 22 yards. Just
awful KO returns when given opportunity. Should get 20 minimum if starting at
0-1 yard line. Grade: D

6 chances on Punt returns: 1 return (22 yards), 2 fair
catches, 4 inside 20. Honestly, I can’t take much from this as they punted well
and their isn’t much you can do to alter that. The one chance at a return was
pretty good. Grade: C

7 chances on kickoff coverage: 0 touchbacks, 25.6 per return, long of 38 yards. We
were awful here all day. Grade: F

6 chances on Punt coverage: 1 return (9 yards), 2 Fair
catches, 2 inside 20. Averaged 40 per punt. Grade: C

FG kicking: 2-2, 27 and 32 yards. Grade: B

FG defense: 2-2, 43 and 37 yards. Grade: C

Overall grade: Just over a D

Intangibles: Too many penalties (10 for 75), many were
absolute drive killers or extenders. Overall grade: D

Overall: Call it a D+. Lots of missed opportunities on both
offense and defense, but quite often Offense had a long way to go (10 of 14
drives) and the Defense (6 of 13 drives) had a short field to cover, thanks to
pretty awful Special Teams play and poor concentration with penalties. What I
really take from this is that we played about as badly as we could and almost
won on the road. What happens
when(if) we clean this stuff up and actually play to our potential?

for the overall defensive philosophy to work (make them drive the length of the field), there has to bea FIELD WITH LENGTH. Crap, when any team starts around the 40 or 50, the playbook is wide open...little risk, high reward. Defense can't do much but base up on first down. Maybe we need to pooch kickoffs to LSU.

I think any team, outside of those with a really special defense (see Alabama, LSU), will struggle when constantly put on short fields. From what I see, if we are 10% better on special teams and penalties we win by at least a touchdown.
