What if we start out 3-0?

Looks to me like this is the easiest part of our schedule. Will it give us the balls to pull out a win against LSU, G Tech, or Houston? Or will it just put us on a false high that will be obiterated by losing between 6 and 8 of the next nine. I remember Rocky's first season, winning the first five or six and then losing all the rest big. I'd hate to see that again, though that was caused by teams figuring out that neither our o-line or d-line could compete and bullrushing every one of our offensive downs and running up the gut of our defense on every defensive down. The Alabama game was especially painful that season. Hopefully, our lines can compete and give us a chance to use whatever momentum we can miraculously muster up.

I believe Auburn will be the make-or-break game for MSU. It's a game that's on fairly even terms with two teams coming off tough seasons and hiring new coaching staffs. The slight advantage goes to Auburn with them being at home, but that shouldn't be enough alone. If MSU wins, it's an early season shot of confidence that could carry them for a while, and possibly start 3-0. Who knows what happens after that, but the sun shines brighter after a 3-0 start. I could see at least 6-6 after a 3-0 start

If Auburn is a loss, it only makes things that much tougher when they stay on the road and play a Vandy team that isn't a pushover anymore. I believe MSU would lose that game too and start 1-2. From there, the season is a wash. LSU is a much better team than MSU, same for Ga. Tech. Houston is picked to win the C-USA West Division. Florida is a no-brainer, and a loss at UK is likely. Bama should be a better team than us unless they can't get at least decent play at QB, and winning at Arkansas is tough. They should be improved. Maybe we beat Ole Miss for 2008 payback and a chance to keep them out of Atlanta. Probably not though. So, to me, an early season loss at Auburn translates to at best a 3-9 record, maybe 2-10.

but it is definitely possible that we pull that off. If we pull that off maybe we do have some confidence to pull a couple of upsets and parlay that into a bowl appearance which would be a GREAT achievement. If we do that Mullen might get a lifetime contract

That is the typical mistake we always make.

But your right, if Mullen can do that, he will get a big time raise, and deservingly so, especially since he is only making 1.2......

for the LSU game. No question that we would have the best gametime atmosphere in the history of the program.

Most people? Yes. Best atmosphere? I don't think the atmosphere would match some of the late 90s games that had division title implications.

but I'll agree that Auburn is more crucial.

On a side note: has anyone seen how ridiculously cheap you can buy vandy tickets for?

Perhaps I should have said that shear number of fans at the game, the addition of Junction, and a fanbase desparately hungry for success would make the atmosphere akin to that of say, 1998's Arkansas game or 2000s Florida game. Certainly, the energy surrounding the stadium would be huge - better than we ever had under Croom.
Edited to correct the reference to the 2000 Florida game. Edit to 1998 reference determined unnecessary.

I've been calling the 3-0 start for a while. Auburn will struggle to score and we'll win the field position game against them. We should find a way to put a TD on the board but win it with a FG from # 37. On to Vandy. Hell, we beat them last year and we sucked last year. If we pull the W at Auburn, we should beat Vandy in Nashville. If we are 3-0 (2-0 in SEC) headed home for LSU, Scott Field will be going batshit crazy. We would need several turnovers from the corndogs to have a chance but remember, they don't have a veteran QB and The Hat is still prone to making some dubmass calls. Could be, could be...

You mean the game that was played with an empty upper deck because it was opening day of deer season?

that were there were the most energized I've ever seen. In the second half I've never heard so much stomping on the bleachers in all my life. Still the most exciting game I've ever attended at Scott Field mostly because of what was on the line and how we pulled it out of the fire.

Winning field position and holding these tema to low scores is assuming an awful lot when we have no clue what Torbush's D will do. If the D is porous it doesn't matter what the offense does because we won't outscore the rest of the SEC, Tech, or Houston. I hope for the best, but Auburn will surely improve too, so I'd wipe that 3-2 result away. Just think back to the Jackie years, the Ws and Ls were a lot different between those teams with Bill Clay defenses vs the JLD led ones (minus the last few where he quit on us)

Like Arrow says, the Auburn game is once again the key indicator of how our season will play out. 2 years ago, we beat them on the Plains and ended up in a bowl game. Last year, we lost to them and the rest of the season went into the toilet. I come in contact with several Auburn people over here and none of them are excited about the upcoming season, their coaching change, or the general direction their program is headed. I know we aren't going to trot out the '98 team against them, but I do feel pretty good about our chances. Their QB situation is in flux, they're changing offensive philosophies, and their head coach has a dismal track record. Bottom line is, as ****** as we played against them last year and with possibly the worst head coach in SEC history, we were still one duck-hooked FG away from beating them. I just don't think that our D will be worse than last year and I think that our kicking game has improved dramatically. This year's offense couldn't be any worse than last year's. I don't remember all of the results from last year, but I know that we would have won 2 more ballgames (AU and UK) if we had a decent kicking game. We gave away the Kentucky game with back to back shanks from McAdams. Mullen recognized that right away and plugged the gaping holes there by signing Hutchins and Brachle (sp?). Hell, I'm just ecstatic that we have an offensive-minded head coach. Have we ever had one before?

last year to keep his job.

this upcoming football season would have included me adopting a new team to watch along side of the bulldogs just so that i could enjoy it for a change. now we may get killed this year but at least there is hope that we will see some real changes out there. with Croom and his crew all i expected was crooked hats, buffet dinners, broken down golf carts, going for it on our own 40 and punting it on the visitor's 30, shanked punts, 3 yard outs routes when we need 15, Dixon up the middle first play from scrimmage every possession, imaginary character, midget quarterbacks with rubber arms, quotes by real men from a real loser, and a general sense of disdain from an awful coach for those of us who pay to see a pile of **** on the football field.

thank you ninja for growing a pair and giving us at least a chance to enjoy football aGAIN.

the game was awesome and the crowd that was there was great; I'm still amazed by that empty deck though, even after all these years.
