has nothing to do with the college board. The amount that the state (ie. Mississippi State University) can pay a coach is mandated by Mississippi state law. I'm too lazy to look it up, but the maximum salary that the state of MS can pay is somewhere in the 200's, if I remember correctly. That's why the remainder of what is promised to coaches in their contract has to come from BC, etc...

...and Foundation money is private to be used for such things as coaches' salary supplements. MSU has done it for years. Ole Miss has done it for years with their foundation. Veazey wrote a great article a little over a year ago about the role of foundations and what they do for college athletics-- it was a top 10 AP article for newspapers the Clarion-Ledger's size.

So no other school is getting this 10 mil a year? Wrong. The price of poker is going up across the board. This means from facilities, salaries, travel and other sports the school sponsors. We could find a way to pay Saban money to someone but that will leave a void somewhere else.

I, like Coach34 and many others, hope that Mr. Seal in his infinite generosity left us a nice nest egg but it may be a while before that money is available. When somebody dies it can take a long time to distribute the estate. Especially when it is as large as his was.

I like your moxie on this issue though. "We have 10 million so lets blow it all on a football coach every year." Such a nieve statement is refreshing in a way.

Ever heard of majoring on the minor? I mean, I really don't think historically overpaying a football coach has been on our radar.

I know. I know. Croom. I don't think Croom was overpayed. I think the pay was justified given the year he had. I just don't think the contract extension was justified.

Hell, I hope we do pay for and get a $4 million a year coach. And I hope we get what we pay for. Byrne said we would be competitive in the SEC. That means we will be looking for a candidate that merits more than we were paying Croom.

you can expect the price of poker (i.e., coach's salaries) across the conference to increase as well.

I would be willing to go out on a limb and predict that someone in the conference will be making 6-7 BIG BILLS in the next 2-4 years.

So, if we are paying out in the 2-3 range, that will still be in the lower third of the conference.
