My guess....a combination of pride over these programs (OM and Southern) that he helped spark doing so well and frustration that college baseball programs in Mississippi are showing that they can be successful. And he's not giving a thought to the fact that this is not good for State, because he could care less about us.

is Polk and the sheep talking about what a disadvantage we had in Mississippi because other states had like Louisiana and Georgia could add extra scholly's...yet the only school that it affected was the one he coached

......that every excuse Polk, Templeton, Gene, and every other member of the flock gave over the years was just a bunch of hot air.

Now we can sit here and discuss Bianco's failure in getting his team to Omaha(so far), but to me that's a simple matter of not taking care of bsuiness when it's all on the line. It has nothing to do with the overall state of his program, which is very good. The fact still remains that he's done everything else that's required to have a perennial national college baseball contending program, and he's consistently hosting regionals and going to super regionals. Sooner or later they'll strike gold. MSU won't strike anything except for OUT.

You have to admit that states with the lottery scholarships do play at a huge advantage in comparison to other states. However, I also agree with you that you really can't complain about it. You have to go out and do what you can with what you have.

As for USM, I really think they are on a 'win one for the Gipper' run right now. They may make Omaha and may make a run when they get there, and it would be a great story, but I think they are playing way above their heads right now. Fresno State did the same thing last year though, and they have a national title to show for it. That's what's great about the baseball tourney.

One thing that they never mentioned or it never occurred to them was that they could get really good players in Mississippi and in a lot of cases offer less scholarship money than Ole Miss and USM.

I would say that is definately an advantage for State. That's the advantage that we should get from our atmosphere, traditon, and history. But Polk simply never took advantage of it. He choose to fight the NCAA, which is stupid. The way he recruited was asinine and incompetent. If you can possibly be both at the same time.

One thing I hate about the sheep is that they would rather have excuses for why we can't than look for solutions why we can. I think that's why they are so vocal about Cohen calling out his team. It upsets them that there may be problems with MSU baseball and they don't want to acknowledge that. They want to believe that MSU baseball is a bunch of good boys who make good grades, don't drink, don't miss Sunday School, don't have their first kiss until college, date good little Diamond Girls, and are awesome baseball players. Even though their stats suggest otherwise. What's even more scary, I'm sure that there are still a few that think that Ole Miss is having a fluke season for the seventh year in a row.

The only thing I can think of is that maybe the sheep are the kind of people that kind of coast through life. Everything is given to them by someone- parents or someone they know- and they've never had to work or struggle for anything in their life. I can't comprehend that.

Part of it is I do have a different philosophy than a lot of them on how baseball should be played. I want to see teams that play hard and work together and have talent. If I want to watch a bunch of pretty boys run around and play grab ***, I'll go watch some frat softball games.

The way Polk wanted them to play isn't even Southern baseball. To me, Ty Cobb, from Georgia, started that. You play hard all the time, you scrap, you run over the catcher, you play with some emotion, you get your uniform dirty, you play like your hair is on fire and if you piss off people in the process, so be it. As you long as you get more runs at the end of the day. That's what makes baseball fun to watch. There's a reason why people like guys like Dustin Pedroia and Pete Rose.

The most refreshing thing I saw this weekend was the article about Ben Bracewell when Cohen was talking about the roster limits. He said that it was good that Bracewell could play the infield to because with the roster limits you really need to maximize what your players could do. In other words pitch AND play in the infield. Contrast that to Polk, who wouldn't have even known about Bracewell in the first place or his dynamic duo of Raffo and McNickle. And by some miracle of chance that they did, Polk would probably talk about how the NCAA is trying to kill college baseball with the roster limits and how he can't compete.

My hope is that once Cohen starts winning that the sheep will come around. Unlike many years in the past, at least I have hope this year.

but here's the reality of it- everyone has some sort of advantage. Even if Belhaven College somehow gained admission to the SEC as a baseball only member, playing at Smith-Wrigley they could offer early playing time.

The other reality of the Lottery Scholarships is I don't know that LSU and Georgia are getting a lot of players that they wouldn't be getting otherwise even if they had to pay their way. And I know that means that they can offer more to out of state players, but there are a lot of other things that these players are looking at besides just scholarship money. A guy from Georgia may want to come to MSU because it's a great place to play, and his parents have money, and if he thinks he's going to go pro, paying off MSU probably isn't going to be that big of an issue.

I think the roster limits and the rule that 27 players have to be getting some sort of aid kind of nullify a lot of the Lottery stuff.

One thing about Lottery Scholarship that Polk never mentioned- while he was complaining, LSU was struggling through the Smoke Laval error, Georgia had a losing season, and Tennessee flat out sucked much of the time.

a strong contingent of baseball players were some of the hardest partiers on campus. I can remember shaking my head watching some of the guys play wondering how in the hell they were doing it given what we had done the night before.

Heck, I heard a story about Keith Hernandez snorting three lines of cocaine and then going three for four.

Alcohol and loose women all come with the territory in baseball.

If only state had someone who not only played the game hard like Cobb but also intimidated the other team like Cobb.....ie sharping spikes before the game in front of the dugout while the other team is taking infield

That's what I seemed to remember.
