One thing that they never mentioned or it never occurred to them was that they could get really good players in Mississippi and in a lot of cases offer less scholarship money than Ole Miss and USM.
I would say that is definately an advantage for State. That's the advantage that we should get from our atmosphere, traditon, and history. But Polk simply never took advantage of it. He choose to fight the NCAA, which is stupid. The way he recruited was asinine and incompetent. If you can possibly be both at the same time.
One thing I hate about the sheep is that they would rather have excuses for why we can't than look for solutions why we can. I think that's why they are so vocal about Cohen calling out his team. It upsets them that there may be problems with MSU baseball and they don't want to acknowledge that. They want to believe that MSU baseball is a bunch of good boys who make good grades, don't drink, don't miss Sunday School, don't have their first kiss until college, date good little Diamond Girls, and are awesome baseball players. Even though their stats suggest otherwise. What's even more scary, I'm sure that there are still a few that think that Ole Miss is having a fluke season for the seventh year in a row.
The only thing I can think of is that maybe the sheep are the kind of people that kind of coast through life. Everything is given to them by someone- parents or someone they know- and they've never had to work or struggle for anything in their life. I can't comprehend that.
Part of it is I do have a different philosophy than a lot of them on how baseball should be played. I want to see teams that play hard and work together and have talent. If I want to watch a bunch of pretty boys run around and play grab ***, I'll go watch some frat softball games.
The way Polk wanted them to play isn't even Southern baseball. To me, Ty Cobb, from Georgia, started that. You play hard all the time, you scrap, you run over the catcher, you play with some emotion, you get your uniform dirty, you play like your hair is on fire and if you piss off people in the process, so be it. As you long as you get more runs at the end of the day. That's what makes baseball fun to watch. There's a reason why people like guys like Dustin Pedroia and Pete Rose.
The most refreshing thing I saw this weekend was the article about Ben Bracewell when Cohen was talking about the roster limits. He said that it was good that Bracewell could play the infield to because with the roster limits you really need to maximize what your players could do. In other words pitch AND play in the infield. Contrast that to Polk, who wouldn't have even known about Bracewell in the first place or his dynamic duo of Raffo and McNickle. And by some miracle of chance that they did, Polk would probably talk about how the NCAA is trying to kill college baseball with the roster limits and how he can't compete.
My hope is that once Cohen starts winning that the sheep will come around. Unlike many years in the past, at least I have hope this year.
