He was able to rid us of Cal without paying him a penny....despite a lifetime contract. I trust MB to do something similar with Stoopsid.
Ummm, Mitch literally went on TV 2 days before Cal left voicing his support for the guy. We got lucky with Cal, nobody wants Stoops

But Cal QUIT. He wasn't terminated. He quit despite having a "lifetime contract". A contract that the BDS infected among us said we were stuck with him for life. I still haven't seen apologies from all the haters who were WRONG. Mitch got rid of Cal and he will do the same to Stoopids.
Yes he did. Mitch called his bluff because of Cal contacting Ohio St. Mitch knew he had him by the balls and Cal had to save face somehow, so he went to Ark.

Thank gawd he did. I couldn't stand looking at Cal for the last 4 years he disgraced our sidelines. He was "saved" only by all of our fans who believed wrongly...this next class we have signed will be different. Same results, first round losses...but of course there was always another #1 or #2 class he had on the way. Most of our fans still believed that 18-yo HS kids could beat men. Cal failed because he either believed that his old ways could win, or he just could not sell his BS to portal men who knew that the NBA was not in their future.

Assuming Stoops is here for 2026, what would the buyout be? We know it is $38 million after this season so if he comes back next year, 2026, what will it cost to buy him out after the 2026 season?
One likely scenario is this. We finish 3-9 or 4-8. They offer Stoops $29 Mil buyout to leave. That's the current buyout minus next seasons salary.
If he says no, let him know that all the NIL money and the revenue share money will be held and will not be used to pay any players. So he can suffer through that and make himself essentially unnoticeable in the profession or take the cash and move on.

That would require Barnhart being the bad guy. He’s rather ruin UK athletics than do that!

Big difference between Cal and Stoops though. Hated Cal at the end but he at least won a title and still was viewed by many as a decent coach. But nobody thinks Stoops is a good coach lol. Stoops isn't gonna have a team trying to snag him as their HC from us.

I agree. The AD has the abillity to snuff out the coach despite the longevity of the contract by taking control of the NIL, the assistants and the rest of the program. He can make it miserable for Stoopid to exist as Head Coach. What coach wants to be humiliated in the SEC because his administration is choking him out. Come to a settlement and move on. That will be his best option.

It would go down by 75% of his yearly salary. So 9m x 4.5 x.75 = 30.375m. I think his salary go up a small amount so a bit more. The 4.5 is for the years remaining on his contract assuming he is fired effective Jan 1, 2027.

can you explain how to get to the $38M buyout for this year? I can’t figure out how people are getting that number

I'm not sure how one gets exactly 38M either. At a yearly salary of 9M I get 37.125M (5.5 years X 9M X .75). There is a escalator clause in the original contract tied to any salary increase given to all exempt employees. Far as I know this is still in effect but have no idea if any salary increase has been given to all exempt employees. In addition Mark is given a number of non cash benefits, free tickets, two vehicles, use of an airplane, etc. Perhaps they have been added. The calculation assumes a termination date of Jan 1st. Use Dec 1st and you get closer to 38M.

I'm wondering if anyone here has been involved in negotiating stuff like this before? Realistically I can't see Stoops wanting to keep eating all this heat. What type of deal could be worked out to separate that mostly benefits both parties? Does UK not have attorney's that can fight this? You are telling me that there is absolutely no loop hole or wiggle room that would at least force a reasonable negotiation?

You don’t enjoy your job. Most of the people in the company don’t like you. But you have a guaranteed contract for $38,000,000 if you can just suck it up and show up to work. Doesn’t matter how good a job you do.

Would you quit?

Well Alan Cutler reported that Stoops tried to negotiate with Mitch after the Tennesse game last year but Mitch wasn't having it so there is that. It's all over X. The question is do we really want Mitch negotiating with anyone or structuring anything at this point?

Makes sense to me, we can't afford any buyout right now. UK cannot afford to make mistakes in this new era.

It was never a lifetime contract. It was a 10 year $86 million contract that would have ran through 2029. Mitch didn’t get rid of him either, he just left. Y’all blindly believe message board rumors with no facts to back it up.

That's it right there big dawg. I show up to a job I don't like for $21 a Hour. If I'm on the hook for 38 mil I would include I hope they fire me tomorrow in my nightly prayers. No way does any sane person be like nah keep your 38 million dollars i'm out. He might be a dunderhead of a FB coach but he's not completely stupid and I don't blame him so much as I blame the contract.

In the words of coach O. You're going to give me 17.1 million dollars?! What time you want me to leave and which door should I use

(Not a exact quote but pretty dang close)

Can’t afford not to buy him out. The fan base stops buying things, going to games it’ll
cost the university more in the long run. They lose a portion of the fan base and still have to pay him at some point.

I use their language to prove a point. The lifetime contact description was a fiction.

It is very unlikely he is fired.

If the report is true that he wanted to walk, then kudos to MB for not going along with it.

“Hey Mitch pay me to quit”

Absolutely not. There is no monetary obligation if the coach wants out and quits on his own.

MB is no dummy. He just played the same game with Cal and won.

Cal wanted out, we all kind of wanted him out. His options were lame duck or roll out for free. I appreciate Cal for finally reading the room and realizing it wasn’t about money. Times had changed.

CMS is in the same situation. Stick around for money or roll out. His ways are no longer working. How much more does he want to lose? How much more unpopular does he want to be?

Does he really want to keep losing to middle and lower tier teams?

Or maybe does he want to go be a DC or position coach somewhere for half a million per?

Maybe he could go work for his pal Kirby and they could reminisce about 80s-90s style football.

The only reason Cal left is because the Arkansas job was waiting for him. There is no way Cal would have just walked away from that buyout money otherwise.

Where is the Arkansas type program to hire Stoops away from Kentucky?
