What is the hallmark of a school's program?

What about the Pirates KP?

Um, I'd have to go with "sooo close". A 2nd in state, three or four semifinalists, and (with the exception of 2018) always competitive and always in the hunt - just hasn't gotten over the hump.

And of course alot of people around PHS think the 2020 squad could rival the 2012 & 2016 squads, but they may never get a chance to play unless they come up with a vaccine soon :(

Who’s coming back this season? Is the giant lineman? I forget his name.

Its moreso "who isn't coming back this season?". Main impact player who graduated was Popovic(going to Butler with O'shea),but just off the top of my head I can think of 7 returning starters on each side of the ball; and 6 total of those have been starting on varsity since they were sophomores.

You know Linklater, Lynch and the Flores brothers? What was their stud's name - Tony Wise?
Hmmm, when I graduated in 89, none of those names ring a bell. Perhaps before or after, the only Wise I recall from that era was a WR from Tinley Park that was an absolute monster that played on their state championship squad around 85 or 86.

That's the guy. We'd watch him on Saturdays - I think he went to Iowa.

My college roomies were all from that area. Some played on that Richards team - others went to Tinley with Wise.

Correct... he went to Iowa. They also had a LB , Eric Schultz, and Tom Blaha a running back who were both stud wrestlers.

I lived on the same floor as two former Tinley Park players my freshman year of college. I believe Tinley Park won a state title in either ‘86 or ‘87. The word from them was that, in one of their playoff games, Wise broke free on a kickoff return, then turned around and waved goodbye to the defense before scoring.

He was a very good Safety at Iowa.

I was there.1986 State Title game opening kickoff vs Rock Island Alleman who had 70+ players compared to 25 for Tinley Park.Btw A stud who played at Richards a few years back transferred from Argo.Said in 2 weeks at Richards he learned more than 2 years at Argo.If Tinley had that 1st year QB that they won state with in 86 on the 85 team I think they could have won it all that year too

[provience was always defense first except at TB. And during the glory years was a zone/power running team:play pass, supplementedwith a 3 step quick passing and a 5 step option route game.
It couldn’t have been any more simpler with maybe 5 running plays and 4 (5 )step plays

QUOTE="JCHillmen, post: 239228, member: 156"]Many of these are dated and some of the programs have changed substantially in coaching turnover and scheme. So a lot of this is just reputation earned in the 90s and 00s. But when I think of a few programs, here is what I think of.......

JC....O line play and a stable of RB’s
MC...split back veer and a 3-4 defense
PC....defense built for speed and a great tailback with a nasty play action pass game
Brook...tailbacks and speed
Montini....a few elite athletes each year
Maine south....blowouts, swagger, and productive QB play
Morris.....offensive power identity but also the ability to get creative

Just a few that come to mind. Like I said, a lot of these no longer ring true with changes. But I will never hear “Providence football” and not think of a tailback dotting the I formation. Doesn’t matter how many years they run their current scheme or how many Myles Boykin’s they turn out. It’s like if someone mentions Nebraska football. You don’t think of Scott frost calling an rpo from the sideline. You think of him running the option with an I back.[/QUOTE]

Marian Catholic of the Heights: 70's-2000's consistent winning with a lack of superior talent.
2010's: Getting smacked in the ESCC

I am sorry but I totally disagree with this. Two guys who played together @ Marian go on to the NFL sounds like a lot of talent for a HS team.

marian always has talent. Thru the 90’s up to their prep bowl run they were always loaded with skill kids. They were good at everything but not GREAT at one thing. During their run to state appearance In 1999 they scopes and sequences everything and was instrumental to them getting over the hump

one of the biggest things Marian was known for during that time period was great coaching on the offensive side and suspect coaching defensively. Guagenti and Mattio were among the best around and very well respected. Not much defensively.

That team was a now-rare collection of many of the top athletes from all the other sport programs in the school at that time. The two wrestlers mentioned above both placed highly at state and one was a champ. The track/field program was represented by a handful of conference champs or top-finishers in events spanning the sprints, throws, hurdles, relays and jumps. Two top baseball players were onboard along with the top swimmer. Most all of these players started both ways, too. Specialization in one sport was far less in vogue back at that time.

Sounds like you agree with me?
"They were good at everything but not GREAT at one thing"
Loaded with skill kids? Marable and who else?

I respectfully disagree. MC if you look at their losses collectively during those times, they rarely gave up 20 points. Numerous times in the playoffs they were shut out or scored below 14pts.
