What is the worst/most embarassing loss for MSU to you?

I'm sure Maine will take the cake, but, losing to Auburn 3 to 2 tops my list. If you tell me all we need to do is kick a fg at some point in regulation to at least force o.t., I'm allin.

Can I count the majority of the losses in the Croom error as the most embarrassing? I can't count the number of times where we stepped out on the field only to fall even further than we did the previous week.

3 days to kickoff. Thinking about my school's worst isn't really at the top of my mind.

Maine, LA Tech, or the 2008 Egg Bowl

I can't fathom how that 2004 team went on to win 2 SEC games. The Maine loss was ridiculously embarrassing.

The LA Tech loss killed all of our momentum after Croom's bowl year. And even though Ole Miss was good that year, the performance we had that day was pathetic. I think we had something like 36 yards of total offense.

Maine is definitely the worst one for me. It takes the cake not only because we lost. The fact that our coach said he expected to lose the game after watching film on Maine was unreal and still baffling to this day.

I will go with the 1991 Liberty Bowl...just because we smacked talked all the way to Memphis about how we would run all over these tiny caucasians from Air Force. We were in line to get a juicy jumbo before the game...by the time we got back to our seats, AF was up 2 touchdowns. Long drive back to the pinebelt.

There really is no other game that tops this.

As bad as Croom was, losing that game was a mind boggling catastrophe that never crossed my mind as being even remotely possible.

The 2006 "Thanks for the check!" Tulane game....

Three years into coaching State, Croom loses to Tulane, a team who lost to Houston 45-7 a week before and to LSU 49-7 a week later. They would go on to lose to Southern 31-3 later in the season. An 8th grade football coach at a 2A school could've coached us to victory that day. But, he somehow figures a way to beat Bama later in the season.

Amen. This thread is so MState. What other school in the nation would have a thread such as this 3 days before kicking off a brand new season where expectations are high? Only us.

Watched the Maine game in person, as well as the Tornado Bowl loss to Troy. Both as bad as it gets. For some reason I'll never forget the BYU loss though. That was the day I learned that MSU was cursed, and sometimes no amount of effort will stem the inevitable tide.

Maine worst loss no question...

2001 worst season to endure. After winning the independence bowl the previous year the Bulldog nation was feeling good about its football team. We start out 2001 with a 30-10 win against Memphis. All is well and good in Starkville. Then 9/11 happens. Games get pushed back. We have the FIRST game back from all games being cancelled. The entire nation is watching as we play South Carolina and unveil a humongous American flag over the field to remember the fallen from 9/11. We lose 16-14 and then I still to this day can't explain what happened to our football program. It absolutely fell off a cliff into a land of horrible horrible football. Something happened to us when we lost to South Carolina that day. We became 9/11 cursed or something. Next game we lose 52-0 to Florida and it took till the day Dan Mullen got hired to get out of that pit of hell. Let's us never forget.

pretty bad loss to Mississippi Slothern around 1979 or 1980 was very embarrassing. Playing them is not a real rivalry, just a very nasty affair. They are bad losers as well as when they score more points than the other team.

I second this. It's a pick em between these 3 with the edge going to the 45-0 egg bowl. Only positive thing for that team was that their coach was fired a few days later because of the performance. That downgrades the effort on field as a positive thing.

Man I am right there with you on this.

It's like someone flipped the Msu Football switch to Off after that game.

I remember telling several people what you just said.

Kentucky 2005

Tulane 2006

Honorable Mention: Troy State 2002. Yes, I know we won, but it didn't feel like it.

I say Maine

Yes, we've had some other embarrassing losses- but Troy was still a I-A team, albeit in their first year, same for Northeast Louisiana and Arkansas State when we tied them.

The bad thing about Maine was this- they weren't even a GOOD I-AA team. In fact, they finished 5-6. And the bad thing about it is when a SEC team loses a game like that- it's national college football news. It's amplified 10X than any blowout loss to Florida.

The other bad thing is usually when a team loses to a I-AA team, they have a really crappy defense and maybe the I-AA team has an athlete like Appalachain State's QB that beat Michigan. Maine didn't have that. And our offense only scored 7 points on them. Seven. And we had Jerious Norwood who is in the NFL. And I believe our o-line had David Stewart who played in the NFL as well. You would think that our team would wear them down.

Troy 2001....

Maine is a given for any MSU fan who's ever watched a game in Davis Wade. As for my 2nd most embarrassing.....

That tornado stricken Homecoming against Troy in 2011 was the beginning of the end for JWS. It was pitiful to watch our effort that day. We cleared the stadium, went back to dorms, and then went back into stadium to watch us **** the bed. Given, the field drainage that day was the most horrendous I've ever seen it, we were clearly the better team, but clearly had no desire to be playing football.

Any team that loses to a Division 1-AA skool should be fired

...fired immediately. I have yet to see a coach recover from a loss to a 1-AA school, ie, MSU vs. Maine, Appalachian St. vs. Michigan, Jacksonville St. vs. university of ole miss. Arkansas had the right idea when they fired Jack Crowe immediately after they lost to the Citadel.

Maine. Nothing remotely close.....

Reason is we've been embarrassed before and you get over it but we will NEVER live that one down. We could win three consecutive NC or spend the next 5 years in the cellar and the incredulous response to anyone who ponders that game would be the same, "You lost a football game to MAINE!?!?"

My ...

Maine is a given for any MSU fan who's ever watched a game in Davis Wade.

OM University coworkers continuous 'remember the Maine' jokes thankfully ended with their equally embarrassing loss to Jacksonville State.

But the game where I came to the personal realization that Croom would never be really successful at State was when we lost to La Tech. That night, I started looking at ‘possible’ replacements.</SPAN>
