What is unethical about criticizing an official?

"<span style="font-weight: bold;">Coach Mullen has violated the Southeastern Conference Code of Ethics</span>,"commissioner Mike Slive said. "SEC Bylaw 10.5.4 clearly states that coaches, players and support personnel shall refrain from all public criticism of officials."
Then again, I'm convinced most codes of ethics are for the purpose of letting you know how much unethical behavior you can get away with.

It's about protecting the SEC from embarrassment. They can reprimand the coaches, but they can't reprimand the ESPN announcers who are continuing to give them hell.

I think it's about precedent. You've seen this rash of criticism from Mullen and Kiffen because the SEC gave credence to Petrino by suspending the officials. I think if it becomes routine to call for officials heads, the SEC risks completely delegitimizing every game in the public eye. If the officials appear impotent at all, who knows what else it might lead to on the field of play.

I hate the way we were treated as much as the next guy, but there is value in putting officials on a pedestal above criticism.

But, they aren't really "above criticism". In today's world, if they make a mistake they are criticized immediately and their mistake is broadcast to the world right away.

So, is there value in pretending they are above criticism by placing them on a pedestal? Or will the Conference office be better served by making sure that each game is called fairly and squarely as much as humanly possible?

when he was argueing with him and the umpire told him to go back to the dugout-

"I wouldn't be out here if you didn't <17> it up in the first place."

If the officials made the right calls, maybe the coaches wouldn't complain. If these weren't legit complaints, I would agree. However, these coaches have every right to complain. A loss could mean their jobs, and not only that, you have to stick up for your players who bust their butt to have some *** named Penn rob them of their hard work so some other ****** can get his Heisman and perfect season. It's all ********.

epilogue: Uncle Mark was then ejected from the game.
