By the way Cutcliffe was the 1998 Broyles award winner in 1998 the year before we hired him, so I guess he was the best coordinator in the country on a National Title team, so HOME RUN. Except he wasn't.

Wilson may very well be an outstanding hire, but he has not proven he can turn around a program and win with less, which is what he will have to do at MSU, same thing Nutt is doing at Ole Miss, because you can go talent for talent with LSU/AU/AL/FL/GA and expect to win.

I think Hatcher would be a great hire.

When Nebraska hired Bill Callahan, it was thought that he was a great offensive mind as well. Problem is, he never put together a defense, and he never managed to land a QB to run his offense. Charlie Weiss was thought to be a great hire as well.

There are a lot of instances where good coordinators have become good head coaches, but to me, you can't call a hire a homerun if it's someone that doesn't have head coaching experience. It may turn out to be a great hire, but to me a homerun hire is a hire that is pretty much a lock to be a winner. You can't say that about any coordinator, because they've never held the CEO position on a football team. They've never had to be the lead in recruiting, the lead in game-planning, the lead in managing practice, or the lead in determining how to motivate a team by pushing certain buttons. Until someone has done that successfully before, you can't call it a homerun or slam dunk.

For example, the hire of John Cohen was much closer to a homerun hire because he had shown the ability to rebuild a weak SEC program and win. He has the experience of managing the ins and outs of a program. Hiring Rick Stansbury was not a homerun. Stans turned out to be a quality coach, but at the time of the hire it couldn't have been considered a homerun, because it was his first real head coaching gig.

Edited to add: When we hired Tubberville, it was not a homerun hire. It turned out to be a great hire, but when he came, no one in the SEC or the nation stood up and took notice. Since he hadn't been a head man before, it was more of a wait and see. It turned out to be a great hire, just as a hire of Wilson might be a great hire, but you can't say it's a homerun. If you hire Wilson, no one in the SEC will say "wow, that MSU is now a player in the SEC for sure". It'll be a "let's wait and see if this guy is any good" type of reaction. That's just the way it is with any coordinator. When Mark Richt was hired at Georgia, it wasn't considered a homerun. It turned out to be a great hire, but it didn't create any hoopla like the Urban Meyer and Nick Saban hires.

Cut won a NC, but his offense wasnt setting records or tops in the nation....Tubby did have one of the top defenses nationally- Tubby= HR, Cut= safe hire

Callahan had destroyed the Raiders in short order. Nebraska was crazy for hiring him. Weiss was a consolation hire after missing out on Urban Meyer. He wasn't a bad hire, in the sense that he had been a successful OC. Now, he was a very risky hire in the sense that he was an NFL OC - in other words, not used to recruiting and developing players. ND messed up when they have him a 10 year contract after one decent season in which the previous head coach left them an NFL QB on roster.

I would rather have a top tier head coach, but we aren't going to get that. The decision then becomes top tier coordinator at a big time BCS school, or head coach from a CUSA level school. Really we weren't going to land a homerun established head coach anyway.

I am not trying to propagate anything Ole Miss in this post. First we didn't look bad at all in our last coaching search, so I assume that you meant the one before Nutt.

I think that your second point is mildly retarded in essence. Just because someone pays well does not mean that you can get anyone. I think that a lot of people would agree that the potential for upward movement and growth is one major thing a person looks at when interviewing for jobs. Now if you do not have a job, you're more than likely to take whatever is out there. While the sky is the limit at State, the track record of individuals having sustained success over a long period of time or going on to higher profile jobs (Darrell Royal aside) is quite scarce. I am not saying that OM does not have face those same problems, but I am saying that us what potential candidates are looking and are having people tell them.

I have started rationalizing that fact in my head. I am starting to feel a little more at ease over that choice. I just hope that he gets some good assistant coaches around him.

He is at a winning program. He is coaching under a winning coach. I am sure he knows how to evaluate talent by now. So he could end up being that uncut diamond. I do hope that Byrd is smart with the money.</p>LR

Yea, those weren't the best examples. However, my point was that I don't think you can call a coach a slam dunk or homerun hire unless he has previous head coaching experience. It doesn't mean that you can't have a coordinator turn out to be a great hire (see us with Tommy Tubberville), but you can't consider it a homerun. A homerun is the type of hire that makes everyone take notice (Saban, Meyer, Spurrier at SC, or even Neuheisal to some extent at UCLA and Rich Rodriguez at Michigan, though the early returns were poor).

If you hire Wilson, it may turn out to be a great hire, but it's not going to be the type of hire that immediately calls the attention of your fellow conference members. There isn't anything wrong with that though, because at Ole Miss and MSU, we're rarely if ever going to end up in a situation where we are able to land one of those slam dunk guys. Even Nutt, though a good hire, wasn't really a homerun in my eyes. I thought it was a solid hire, but it really didn't get me all that excited, and I don't think it struck fear in any of our fellow conference members.
