I'm giving the defense a little of a break due to being extremely thin at DE and LB. Banker is the coach I am least sold on, so I really don't know what to expect from him or know if he can put together a great defense. We've gotten shredded all over the place by two quality opponents and one that really isn't (today).

Kicking game is also a big concern and will cost us a game I am afraid.

It's the running game and lack of production so far that is a glaring issue IMO. I am mostly worried this staff will favor passing over running during their tenure and that is not the recipe to big time success.

1. Pass Defense
2. Penalties
3. Red Zone offense/play selection
4. Refusal to rotate Oline when some are performing poorly
5. Lack of improvement after 4 games
6. Failure to put teams/games away

My biggest concern about this team is that our best pass rush DE is a redshirt freshman.

It's not Banker's fault there are not enough pass rush specialists on this team. We need more guys who can collapse the pocket to make this D work.

We got some sacks today, but until we show we can pressure the QB without blitzing, our secondary will struggle against even average QBs.

I look forward to a future with the Davis twins and freedom harassing the qb. This has the look and feel of a transition year, but I don't think we will be over matched in the big. We can stop the run and that's what the big does best.

Not much talent on the roster, too many 3 stars recruited. Banker is not a good DC and Brown is nothing like his brother. If we don't land a top 15 or better recruiting class every year this will be the norm for the next 15 years too

They knew going in that we were thin at DE and the pass rush would suffer. So why still run the scheme? This is where I'm confused. We have like a hundred years of coaching experience but we cant figure out a way to help out our corners.

I agree with this. Riley could see that we don't have the personnel to run his offense so he changes his scheme. Banker? Not so much.
We have the second worse pass defense in the nation. Do we have the seconded worst secondary talent?

So let's go back to the old schme and watch the LBs get picked on.

I've been saying it since BYU, we are thin, all over on D. We have some good players but not enough WITH EXPERIENCE. I don't care what scheme you run this year. We are not deep, and we keep losing starters on D. We are going to struggle on D all year long.

I'm most concerned about penalties. The running game was decent today. I think we need to run tommy more. I've been wanting to see the qb draw for a couple weeks now, and I thought it was a great call today. I think the kicking game is pretty good, but brown missing that bunny at the end to ice the game is a little concerning. I hope DPE will be back soon, that should give the offense and special teams a boost.

Agree, a scheme is only as good as the players running it. This is the same defense mich st runs from what I understand. Now if someone wants to argue how the scheme is being coached that may be an issue, but the scheme itself is fine.

IMHO the run game took a huge step back. It could be that our rb slows down or stops when defenders are near. He is probably great at practice or flag football but runs scared. Our fullback or Wilbon should b play more. Lack of pass rush is not bankers fault, we just don't have anyone there to do it unless they are told to be slow like from pelini. Our coverage is poor.

Not to pick nits but the kick at the end of the game got tipped by southern miss. So it wasn't all Browns kick

I've posted since the spring that ONE injury at linebacker or DE could be devastating for our defense. We've had multiple injuries there. I'm afraid Bando and MRI are not going to be healthy the whole year and now M Newby apparently tore his groin. We're screwed at linebacker. ONE guy missing there would be enough to really hurt your D. We're down to a freshman, walkons and a first year converted safety at linebacker. We're screwed. I don't know how you piece this together now. All the Banker bashers are going to have a blast and there's little Banker can do about it.

Guys and girls, not a Husker fan here but USM and college football fan. From the outside looking in, I think most all of you are right. There are several areas that did not appear to be traditional Nebraska caliber today. 1) is the secondary, that is obvious. It was bad enough that Southern receivers were open but the yds after the catch should be a concern as well. It wasn't that there was a whole lot of yds after the catch but past NU DB's tackled immediately allowing virtually no YAC yds. 2) The running backs (not counting the FB) lacked explosiveness. Personally, I can't remember a time when NU had an "average" RB. I was expecting more I guess because that is/was one thing you could count on with NU. 3) the pass rush.....considering the competition. Granted most plays were a three step drop out of the shotgun but again I was expecting more. Mullens is a three year starter with a good head on his shoulders but he does not run...ever and there were several plays where he had plenty of time to go through his progressions. 4) the energy of the team seemed to be lacking. Maybe it was a let down game coming off the Miami game but I got the feeling that there was not 100% effort.

Bottom line to me is that Armstrong is a star but he needs help in the running game (FB wrinkle may help that) and he needs a star receiver. Some one in those ranks needs to step up because defensively there are some serious holes in the secondary, meaning that NU is going to have to out score people in the B1G.

I watched Illinois after NU, they are not as offensively potent as USM but better defensively. They have bigger and better backs but their receivers had the drops today and the QB is average at best. Their line gave up several sacks to an undermanned defensive front.

I will be pulling for NU, hope yaw get it together and make run at the West!
Good luck.

The team doesn't look much better than in week one in most phases. #1 concern.

Riley will slowly field a sharper team. There is a lot to un-learn and the opportunity to coach these men up.
The team still looks like Pelini coached team.

This team is flat out sloppy and undisciplined. We may lead the nation in penalties tomorrow. The sloppiness in the secondary is getting worse too. This sloppiness has been a sign of Riley's teams in the past so the assurances this will get cleaned up is not easy to believe.

MR needs time to install his direction. We would not be any better, perhaps worse with previous staff with this team. Tommy has mad huge strides and I expect similar in other areas. We need to get back some d players and DPE. I think we have a run d for the first time In yrs but we will see.

No problem with any of that. However the poster asked what our biggest concern was. Right now it's sloppiness and penalties.

I'm thinking about how Michigan went 5 - 7 last year, and just shut out a team that beat us. Is it realistic to think a new coach should be able to improve upon a program that is seen as underperforming. I realize there are extenuating circumstances that cloud where we "should be". My concern is that we (fans, coaches, players, etc) quit caring and accept where we are.

There have been threads asking what should we change. I don't think we should really change anything in the big picture. That doesn't mean do the same thing over and over again. It means work within our schemes or systems and players to find out what will work. We can't install a new defense or offense every year and expect to do well. We could have trouble recruiting kids into a system telling them it will be different next year.

Banker is definitely the biggest concern.

Interesting Oregon State article published shortly before we hired Riley: http://www.buildingthedam.com/2014/12/1/7315363/the-catch-22

56% of Oregon State fans wanted Banker and other assistants fired, and an additional 24% wanted Riley and his entire staff gone. Only 20% wanted to keep the staff (that is now here). Riley could very well be on the hot seat at OSU this year had he stayed there.
